Kyochon, SS2

Last weekend my brother and I had a lunch date. We had a mission to accomplish at SS2 - pet shop! Well, that would be a story for another day.

We originally planned on having dim sum. But we had second thoughts because the dim sum place near my home (Paradise Dynasty@IPC) seemed similar to Din Tai Fung and we were not that keen.

So anyway, off to SS2 to settle our business. When we left the pet shop we saw Kyochon round the corner. My brother has been telling me about Kyochon fried chicken and how good they were (ordered via Grabfood).

There is a Kyochon at 1 Utama but it is always full house when I pass by Friday evenings. Which explains why I have never been there. Besides, this is not the sort of food that my partner likes.

So without further ado, we crossed the road and made our way to Kyochon. We were the first ones there and the music was blaring away very loudly. My brother had to tell the server to turn the volume down.

I let my brother do the ordering as he is more familiar with the menu.

Iced Lemon Tea for each of us.

And my brother's favorite Honey Wingette & Drumette (12 pieces) which comes in a set with rice, drinks and soup.

My brother chose the Garlic Rice for himself and a Kimchi Fried Rice for me. I tasted a spoonful of the Garlic Rice and thought it was flavorful but the garlic was not that distinct.

But I enjoyed the Kimchi Fried Rice a lot.

And now on to the chicken. Whoa! I loved it! No wonder my brother was raving about this honey fried chicken.

That's not all.

My brother also made an order for the Sampler which consisted of Soy+Red Pepper+Honey chicken (4 pieces each). After tasting all three, the honey is still the best to us.

After we placed our order, the server was concerned since our food totals 24 pieces of chicken plus two bowls of rice and soup. My brother assured her that if we can't finish, we will tapau the chicken.. Yeah, right.

When the food was served, I also thought we ordered too much but well, knowing us ..... Can! We can eat!

We also had an order of pickled radish which was great in providing freshness and actually makes us want to eat more chicken hah...hah...

We finished everything except the soup (which was pretty ordinary) and side salad (we did not like the dressing). I was really stuffed and I did not need to eat dinner that evening. Many thanks to my brother for introducing me to Kyochon and for the treat!

Well, one of these days, I am going to order through Grabfood!

  1. I thought you would have loved the red pepper ones more. The pickled radish look raw, is it raw with very strong radish taste? Too bad that the time I ate the red parts near the chicken bones, the meat has a not fresh taste. Maybe I will try the honey wings and kimchi fried rice.

    1. The radish is pickled from raw state. The chicken here is good, properly cooked.

  2. I can't believe it has taken you so long (since 1991) to try...ok-lah, I'm just pulling your leg (last 5 years here more like it). Unfortunately, the biggest branch here at Pavilion have downsized since its opening days...probably due to so many Korean fried chicken around these days.

So, I was right (in my review) that people generally gravitate towards the honey series coz it's both crunchy and sweet. For me, I preferred the original soy. I also liked the crunchy, juicy, tangy, pickled radish in between mouthfuls of fried chicken. As for the salad, I see that they had changed the dressing (it used to be something refreshing and tangy, like some kind of sauce made with berries, instead of the creamy sauce you had).

Since these are wingettes & drumettes (they're not as filling as thighs & drumsticks), I could possibly handle 6 - 8 pcs myself, so 12 for each of you should be no problemo. ^_~ P/S: Your brother was very nice (and patient) to hold back eating to allow you to take an overall photo but you had to steal a spoonful of his rice first....wakakakaka! :D

    1. hah..hah... Better ate than never! I missed that post and I went to search for it. Yup, the honey series is the best tasting. So good! As for the pickled radish, I first had that at Nene Chicken and I loved it.

Oh, you noticed that spoonful of rice hee..hee...hee...

  3. I always find that these types of Korean fried chicken (Kyochon, 4 Fingers and others) are quite expensive as the portion is not big and the size of the chicken is small (sound so cheapskate, I know :( ). So I never dine in at any of these restaurants ~>_<~
There's another Korean fried chicken restaurant in 1U which is quite popular - K Fry, always long queue whenever I passed by.

  5. I tried the KyoChon in Pavillion back in 2016 and like it so much! I like their kimchi fried rice too, but my mum said it is too much 'wok hei' and got that smoky odour, lol!

    1. Maybe it is because you are not a fan of fried chicken.

    1. Good. Don't start now. LOL! They can't be good with all that oil and sweet sauces. To be enjoyed only once in a while.

  10. Korean? I saw bbq chicken, a Korean franchise in Miri but I did not go and try. We do not have that here, only Pelicana.

  11. I have eaten at 1-U's Kyochon many times and loved the spicy ones. However my Korean chat group friends told me that nobody eats Kyochon in Korea except tourists. They guaranteed me that many other Korean restaurants serve much better fried chickens than Kyochon until I made the trip to Seoul and Busan in April recently. I was surprised that it is very true that all the fried chicken are very tasty to the max! I think the chefs there marinate them very well with lots of tenderizers that could melt the chicken in your mouths! So yummy lah!

I think I accidentally saw one Korean chef deep frying the chicken and scooped out to dip into other marinated flours before frying again. It was like layers of crisps in different flavours.

    1. Oh really? Hmmm... I would not not know until I get a chance to go to Korea and try the better ones! I would leave all those techniques to the chefs. I feel it is not really worth it to fry at home. Unless someone else does the frying and washing and I just wallop!
