Excuse me, yah? I have featured tempeh before and I am posting it again. I haven't had tempeh for a while and I simply had to have it again.
All I need are 3 main ingredients - tempeh, ikan bilis and peanuts. All 3 need to be deep fried. I know. Oily. Oily. Oily.
And then the sambal just needs chilies, shallots and garlic. Pound. Pound. Pound. And the spice paste has to be fried in hot oil. Again, oily.
Then the 3 deep fried ingredients are tossed in the aromatic sambal. Super OILY. But I love this, OK? It's one of my favorite dishes and I am happy I can cook this at home.
Sambal Tempeh

- a handful of peanuts, fried

- 1 heaped tbsp chilis paste
- 1 tbsp tamarind juice (asam jawa)
- 1/2 tsp salt

1. Heat oil and saute the blended spice paste and chili paste until aromatic and oil rises to the top.
2. Add tamarind juice, salt and sugar. Saute for about 1 minute.
3. Add tempeh, ikan bilis and peanuts and stir to coat.
I ate tempeh before but not sambal tempeh where everything in one bowl. Must be appetizing and good. I just had tempeh in lalapan few weeks ago. Post on it coming up soon!
ReplyDeleteI did not fall in love with it the first time I ate but it sort of grew on me!
DeleteU sorang je yg suka makan cenggini or chinese lain pun suka LL? Sedikit pelik I ni tau, i ingat chinese tak suka....
ReplyDeleteTp tulah.... nak maintain ikan bilis tu crispy susah jugakkan ....
Tak tau lah, Hainom. LL ni suka makanan Melayu. Orang kata kalau nak ikan bilis crispy, kena tunggu bahan2 lain sejuk dulu baru digaul bersama.
Deletei have a question to ask ... is this recipe oily? :)
ReplyDeletehah..hah... very oily! That's why it is so delicious :D
DeleteI like to eat tempeh. Since this dish is spicy, I think I can only eat a bit with lots of rice.
ReplyDeleteCan reduce the spiciness by adding less chilli :)
DeleteI have never tried it, from the description it is oily but tasty:)
ReplyDeleteVery tasty (to me)!
DeleteNext time you should try this, cut the tempeh, then I not remember what is gaul in English, Alah hamtam saja..just gaul with garam and kunyit, then you fry it just like that. Then you cicah dgn sambal kicap, sedappp. I pernah mkn nuget tempeh, I think lagi best dari nuget ayam tau.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds very sedap, ticer. I will be sure to try it because I love tempeh.
DeleteSaw that at the Ramadan Bazaar but I did not buy any.
ReplyDeleteYes, I saw that on your post :)
DeleteHave not tried spicy version before
ReplyDeleteMust try because very good!
DeleteI just ate this on Sunday. I bought from one popular Malay nasi stall at Taman Megah's Pasar Malam. Looks very similar to yours but I am very sure yours is spicier & more delicious. I know, I know I will get nothing for all the praises. Maybe you might want to fry a lot and I help you to sell them in bottles. I can sell them online in my blog! Mahu Kak Hong???

LOL! You never give up do you? Adoi, call me kedekut again :D
DeleteI could eat this every day too....but without the tempeh! ;) Eating something spicy and oily like this needs lots of rice :)
ReplyDeletehah..hah... I remember you said you detest tempeh!
DeleteEating outside also is oily.. unless it is oats and oats everyday.. very meaningless life, hor? So... just eat and enjoy while it lasts and while you are not lazy like me!
ReplyDeleteOh no, no more oats for me unless it's overnight oats with yummy toppings hee..hee..
DeleteI haven't cook any tempeh dish. Shall try this one day, sounds good and thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteIf you like tempeh, then you will enjoy this dish!
DeleteI have not tried Tempeh before but from the look of it, I don't think I will like it
ReplyDeleteNever try never know :)
DeleteI can finish my plate of rice with only this :P Dangerous stuff~
ReplyDeleteYes, I can just eat it on its own. Lagi dangerous!
DeleteWhat a temptation! Looks so delicious! Just when I have to cut down on oily food!
ReplyDeletehah..hah.. eat once in a while is OK.
DeleteI'm rather fond of the texture of tempeh.
ReplyDeleteI love the taste as well especially deep fried.
