Year End Blues

Happy New Year everyone! The year 2025 is gone and today we begin the first day of 2026.

But I admit I did not wake up all perky and looking forward to the new day. But I will be fine.

The last two days of 2025 were very hectic and frustrating. I had so much to clear in the office and was unable to sleep well. Last night was restless and made worse by me drinking coffee at midday (to perk myself up).

So yesterday I decided to go for a happy happy lunch. A spot of self pampering.

Guess where I went? Yup, Gu On at The Starling. These days I don't do carbs for cheering up. I was served the default condiments and side dishes - kimchi, eryngii kimchi and lotus root.

The lotus root was very nice! It had a soy sauce flavor, salty and savory.

This sesame edamame I picked up from their top up counter. It looked like petai hah...hah... I'm afraid it was bland and did not have any sesame taste.

Even before the meat was served, I helped myself to an extra serving of kimchi. I was getting ready to attack the three portions of meat that I ordered. Yes, three.

(It is raining heavily as I write this post).

There you go - BBQ meat and an additional side of spring onion salad. This item you have to order from the menu and it is not chargeable.

From left to right - Beef Flap Meat, Pork Hidden Back and Pork Collar Tip.

I unleashed my full potential of eating lots of meat.

The beef flap meat was cooked to medium rare, so it was tender and juicy.

The best meat among the three.

The pork hidden back was a lean cut but it was moist and tender.

While the pork collar tip had fats and was very tasty.

Well, I felt so happy while eating the meats and kimchi. All my problem and stress (temporarily) forgotten hah..hah... Yes, this meal cost me quite a bit but it was money was well spent.

Eat meat and be happy!

Meanwhile, next door a new restaurant is opening.

I'll check them out and report back.

Meanwhile, I hope you all are having a nice New Year day holiday and I wish you all a very Happy New Year and may 2026 bring all good things to you and your family!

  3. Hey there my friend! I love garlics, onions and kimchi! So lesson learnt, remember try not to drink too much coffee mid afternoon, it can cause insomnia and insomnia is no joke. Plus it can lead to a vicious cycle if you know what I meant. But great to hear that is over for you now. Always having you in mind and wishing you well πŸ’• Am having boneless roasted duck drumstick rice with their special dark soya sauce/bbq sauce for my mid day lunch today. Thankful that my day was so far so good as planned.

  6. The 3 types of meat look very good. We plan to go eat at Gu On again.
Will remember to order the spring onions salad and see what banchans are available. We didn't see the sesame edamame banchan that day. Did you eat the whole bulb of garlic πŸ§„ in this meal?

    1. Their banchan changes but the regular is always the cabbage kimchi and kohlrabi or eryingii kimchi. Yes, I ate the whole bulb of garlic because I love it. I hope you have another good experience at Gu On.

  8. Eh, I already made a comment on this post...but somehow it's missing. Anyway, I'm glad you had a better dining experience this time with the beef here (I remember you mentioning it being tough the last time).
