I am sure many people love prawns, right? It's not that I don't like prawns, just that I am not that crazy about them.
When prawns are served or if they are present in any dish, sure I eat them with gusto. But I won't go out of my way to eat prawns or buy prawns to cook.
Ah! It was a packet of prawns that my brother (the married one) gave me for Chinese New Year. My brother works for the bank and he gets lots of gifts from customers (who butter him up to approve loans kah..kah..kah...). It so happened that among the gifts were a packet of frozen prawns.
These prawns were of different sizes - some were small and some were bigger. I was debating if I should peel them or cook them with the shells on. In the end I decided to shell them because it is a hassle to peel the prawns and get my hands dirty when eating.
So cook what, eh? There are many ways to use these prawns.
How about Bacon and Prawn Fried Rice?
Then I fell back on something much easier because I had some chili paste in the freezer. So this happened.
It looks a mess and I did not bother do a proper photography session. Without shells, the presentation is not as good.
These were two chili prawns that I cooked in the past.
Of course these are those big ass prawns and they looked great.
Ooooo...your prawns look so good! Are those farmed ones? Usually, they are that colour - they block up a section by the beach and use that part of the sea to rear the prawns. In a way, the prawns are raised in their natural habitat as well. I bought the farmed ones before - very nice and of course, cheaper than those caught from the sea.
ReplyDeleteThe ones in your 3rd last pic get my vote - cooked in sambal, right? Looks so delicious!
My girl is just like you - will eat but not really into prawns. She prefers sotong (squid).
Yes, those prawns are farmed ones. The prawns that I cooked previously were cooked in a chili and salt paste, simple and good!
DeleteYes, prawns are so versatile. They tasted great in any way. Yum yum. I don't mind receiving prawns as gift too. They aren't cheap either. Hehe.
ReplyDeleteLOL! I hardly buy and cook only when people give me hah..hah...
Deleteheck cares about the presentation, as long as tasty just wallop!
ReplyDeleteYa lah, prawns always taste good.
DeleteI'm grown less fond of prawns as I get older. I certainly don't want to cook and deshell them.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind doing the deshelling and cooking once in a blue moon.
DeleteHmmm, I seem to remember seeing this photo of your spicy prawns before. I love all your prawn dishes except for the one with fried rice. Those have the translucent and glossy look like frozen prawns. Yeah, prawns taste much better cooked with their shells on (like fish or chicken cooked on the bone) but we're too lazy to mess up our hands during eating so we tend to peel off the shells...lol.
ReplyDeleteYou are right, I did mention these spicy prawns in one of my earlier posts. Those frozen ones that you dislike I bought from the supermarket (on a whim) and they have that crunchy texture and are quite tasteless. Cooked with shells on not only taste better but presentation wise, they look great as my late grandma would say "tua pan"! LOL!
DeleteYou must hint hint your bro to read this post, hehe :P There's a famous dish at fishing villages like Sekinchan, namely Chili Prawns where the prawns are diced (or originally use those tiny prawns, not sure :P) then cooked in chili paste.
ReplyDeleteLOL!
DeleteI love to eat prawns but only those without shells although I won't say no to those with shells on too. Your photos of cooked prawns dishes look so delicious!
ReplyDeleteI see that you also dislike peeling the prawns. Very mafan to eat especially when eating out.
