MCO 2.0 Day #17 : I'm So Happy You Peed

And pooed. WARNING : Graphic content. Read at your own risk. OK, now that we have gotten that out of the way, any of you who are squeamish, please don't click yah....

I have recently succeeded in getting Ah Girl to use tofu litter. In the past, right from the start she was using the Fussie Cat clay litter. The initial two bags were given to me by my brother.

I liked the cat litter (some people call it cat sand) because it was great at clumping and the odor control was quite good.

But I had issues with tracking, ie when Ah Girl steps out of her litter box, she inevitably tracks some of the cat sand onto the floor. It creates quite a mess.

Then I read about tofu litter (after hearing about it on Youtube) and learnt that not only is it flushable, it can also be composted since it is made from tofu residue.

I thought why not give it a try since it is bio-degradable. So I bought two packets via Lazada. I knew that it would be a challenge to get Ah Girl to make the switch.

What I did was set up another litter box with the tofu litter in it and placed that box next to her current box, just so she can familiarize herself with it. Of course, she continued to use her regular box.

Then one day, I noticed that my TV cabinet was very dusty (I had been so busy I neglected my housekeeping). As I wiped the dust, I noticed a familiar lemony smell. Eh, what's that? It could not have come from the cloth since I only wet it with water.

Then to my horror, I realized that the dust came from the cat sand. It flew all the way from the litter box. If it settled on the furniture that meant I was breathing it in too. PENGSAN!! That explained why my bronchitis was flaring up recently, an affliction that I have not experienced in a long time.

I immediately moved the litter box (containing clay litter) outside. I did notice before that the litter is dusty whenever I replaced it after washing the litter box. But when I poured tofu litter into the fresh box, there was no dust.

So Ah Girl was left with tofu litter in the house and for many weeks, she refused to use it. She only did her business outside. Until one Sunday morning when mommy woke up late.

I saw a wet patch in the litter box. Yes!!! She finally peed in the box. The clumping properties were excellent. And you don't get those annoying tiny broken bits that you do with clay litter.

But she still did her poopie outside in her old box. And yes, many weeks after, she finally let go in the tofu litter (again, because mommy woke up late).

This picture above was her 4th time doing big business in the tofu litter. Poop being dry, does not clump but that is OK as it can be easily removed. But if the poop is damp, then you will see the tofu pellets clinging to it. I did warn you that this post is graphic hah..hah...

Another thing that I like besides no (very low if any) dust is the low tracking. When Ah Girl leaves the box, I can practically count the number of pellets she drags - at the most 8 and these can be easily swept and put back into the box. My floor is also less dusty now.

I still have two bags of the Fussie Cat litter and Belle Belle will continue to use it until it runs out. I will also start her on tofu litter when that happens. So from now on, it will be tofu litter for both cats.

Haiz... you all pangsai, mommy also have to spend money!

Belle Belle is unwell.

She seems lethargic and spends most of her time sleeping. Her ear/gum infection flared up again. It is time to take her to the vet.

Lunch! Same old same old. I ordered errr... tofu again. This time I chose hot sauce for the drumsticks and yes, I could taste the sauce properly this time. I like it! And it does pack a sting, but nothing that I can't handle.

When I ate the kimslaw again, it tasted like chicken rice chili dip to me. Funny, hor? Wait lah, I am making kimchi soon. See if I can make this kimslaw since it is so expensive.

  1. Yay! You are now using tofu litter for Ah Girl (Belle soon). It is true, tofu litter is more environmental friendly and friendly to us too, less dust and less tracking. I have been using tofu litter since day one.

  2. Ah Girl photo is so manja la. Looking at you like that, so very manja. Good girl, to go big in the tofu litter and not do it on the sofa or floor since cannot go outside to do it cos mommy slept late.

    1. She was reluctant initially. She goes to the box and look-see-look-see and then decided not to use. LOL!

  6. I'm aware of tofu litter but didn't choose this option because of the cost factor and the fact that Cookie has already been on it all his life so the transition could be difficult. I've not had a problem with Fussie Cat since my litter box is not in the house (and Cookie sticks to a set schedule for his 'business'). Clay litter tends to get dusty with prolonged use (so it needs to be changed completely periodically). Actually I was taken aback when I saw Ah Girl's open-type litter box being inside the house coz there'll be tracking. For litter box inside the house, you should have gotten an enclosed type, that way the mess will be minimised.

From the close-up photo of Belle, I think her ear infection is due to ear mites (evidenced by the longer strands of hair sticking out from her ears but I may be wrong). Her gum infection also may lead to something more serious (continue with your vet check-ups).

Ah, you ordered the tofu again. I see it took 3 hot drumsticks to make you finally taste the spiciness (when one would do it for me)...lol.

    1. Since Cookie's litter box is outside, then it is not an issue. I still think Fussie Cat litter is excellent and more cost effective. I did consider the hooded litter box but it is more expensive and not so practical because I have to remove the hood every time I need to clear the box. But I might consider when the box needs to be replaced.

You are right, Belle has ear mites. I am keeping up with the ear drops and it is like doing sumo wrestling with her. LOL!

I love the tofu hee..hee... and I love the hot sauce too!

  7. Can't wait for you to make more kimchi and kimslaw. Have you shared your kimchi recipe here before? What do you use as starter for your kimchi to ferment?

    1. LOL! I think it won't work for doggie because doggie don't usually do business in sand, right? Maybe if trained from young they might accept hah..hah...

    1. She is better now but the ear infection has not completely cleared yet. Hopefully with continued ear drops, she will heal.
