My Favorite Breakfast

I wish I could say nasi lemak because if I had my way, I would eat nasi lemak everyday for breakfast. Or roti canai. Or meehoon goreng. Or tai pau. Haiz....

Those breakfast items are delicious but they are simple carbs that will immediately convert into fat around my belly. Crap!

Even oats, which are complex carbohydrates, if eaten in excess (I can only tolerate 1/2 cup) can cause me to put on weight. Some years ago when I started eating overnight oats, I used multigrain soya bean milk (which is awesome) as my soaking liquid (with 1 cup oats). Unfortunately due to the sugar content I experienced weight gain. Imagine putting on weight eating oats. Bah!

So I stopped. I found unsweetened soya bean milk but the taste and smell was simply awful. Yucks! Fortunately, I found an alternative which is unsweetened almond milk. Love it! So now, on Sundays, I make overnight oats for the week.

Very easy. Rolled oats, almond milk and chia seeds are my base ingredients. I put 1/2 cup of oats and 1 tablespoon of chia seeds into each jar.

Then I fill each each jar with 200ml of almond milk and give a stir to mix everything up.

At this point I store the jars in the fridge. Every morning I take a jar our, pour the contents into a bowl and add fresh fruits.

I like sliced bananas as it naturally sweetens my oats and if I am feeling extravagant, I add Korean strawberries and blueberries.

Another thing I like to add is chopped roasted walnuts. It brings the taste of the overnight oats to a different level. Yums!! Dried fruits are also an option, just don't eat too much as they are concentrated in sugar (even natural ones).

I am happy to report that after two weeks of overnight oats, my weight has remained stable. Best of all, it keeps me full until 2 to 3pm where I can just eat a light snack (hard boiled eggs or tuna cakes) to keep me going until dinner.

Overnight Oats
Recipe source : Phong Hong
Note : Makes 5 servings.

Ingredients
- 2.5 cups rolled oats, divided into 1/2 cup per jar
- 1 liter unsweetened almond milk, divided into 200ml per jar
- 5 tbsp chia seed, divided into 1 tbsp per jar
- any fresh or dried fruits you like and roasted nuts

Method :
1. Fill each jar with oats and chia seed.
2. Pour in the almond milk and give each jar a stir to mix everything up.
3. Cover the jars and store in the fridge.
4. The next day, take a jar out and add your choice of toppings. You may serve the oats direct from the jars or pour the contents into a bowl. I find it easier to eat from a bowl due to the toppings.

  3. Your overnight oats look so tasty with all the fresh fruits. It is true that eating any food with sugar will cause us to put on weight. Therefore I soak my oats with just plain water. The almond milk that you bought from Australia must be expensive. Now I am curious, what do you eat for dinner after eating overnight oats for breakfast and a snack like tuna cakes for late lunch? Is it a dinner without any carbs?

    1. It's very tasty and I can't believe how much I love oats now. Yes, the almond milk is rather pricey but since I like it, I don't mind spending. For dinner, it is usually a soup or salad.

    2. Wah, if you eat like this - just soup or salad for dinner, you will keep losing weight for sure.

  4. I used to make them on weekly basis of 5 jars for my wife until she grew tired of them. I need to modify a bit and add bananas too! It is so healthy and filling that could help one to loose weight easily. Even pi jamban also sekali gus habis!! Kekekeke

  6. No way! I can't believe you do that too! I make my overnight oats on the weekend by putting all of the ingredients in jars for the week and then I just add the liquid the night before I need them. Sometimes I even do two weeks ahead if I have enough jars and space in the fridge. I mix up the contents with different seeds, dried fruit and nuts for variety. I just use hot water though (the night before) and then add a splash of skim milk in the morning.

    1. Surprised, eh? High 5! It's so convenient and hassle free to just grab a jar in the morning and eat. Using water is too plain for me, so my best alternative is unsweetened almond milk which taste better than unsweetened soya bean milk.

  7. You are so discplined!

The only reason I eat oats or bars of oats is because I'll be running later and dont Want to be Hungry or too full.

    Otherwise, give me nasi lemak!

    Lol

  8. Maybe it might work with unsweetened fresh soya bean since I don't like almond milk.

    1. Yes, it works with unsweetened soya bean milk, just that I find the "green" taste quite awful.

  10. So healthy and rajin hah! Mine cannot be compared to you... I just blend fruits in the morning before I go out or if rushing for time, I drink them in the afternoon. And I take only plain oats on Sunday morning before going to church... certainly not attractive at all compared to your oat-and fruit-licous drink!

  11. At one time I was eating plain oats porridge with dishes instead of white rice. But after a while, I became lazy. Your oats looks so delicious. I guess I will have to start eating oats again. This time instead of adding nuts, I will add fruits instead!
