Whose Mistake??


Actually it's "beefsteak" but grandma called it "mistake" and no one bothered to correct her. So Mistake it is 😊

It is one of grandma's hallmark and a dish which was a favorite of mine when I was growing up. 

One of my earliest recollections was eating the beef patties in between two slices of bread. Grandma made that sandwich for me to take to school.


Up till this day, I still enjoy grandma's Mistake and I believe my mum, my aunties and my uncle still remember this dish fondly.


Grandma's Beefsteak
Recipe source : Phong Hong

Ingredients :
For the patties :
- 350g minced beef
- 1 big onions, minced
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp freshly cracked pepper (this time I used black pepper)
- 1 tsp tapioca flour
- 1 tsp salt

For the vegetables :
- 1 big onion, sliced into wedges
- 1 tomato, sliced into wedges
- 1 cup of green peas
- 2 russet potatoes, steamed or boiled till half cooked and cut into wedges

For the sauce (combine and please adust to taste) :
- 5 tbsp tomato ketchup
- 2 tbsp distilled vinegar
- 1 tbsp light soya sauce
- 1 tbsp worchesthershire sauce (I omitted this time and the sauce still tastes good)
- 2 tbsp Terengganu "kayciap" or sweet soya sauce
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tsp tapioca flour

Method :
1. To make the beef patties, mix all ingredient together to form a stick well combined mixture.
2. Form patties and fry in hot oil until cooked and browned. Drain on paper towels and set aside.
3. Heat oil in another pan and fry the potato wedges untuil browned. Drain and set aside.
4. To make the sauce, saute the onion wedges until wilted.
5. Add tomatoes and saute briefly.
6. Pour in the combined sauce ingredients and bring to a boil.
7. Once thickened, add the beef patties, potato wedges and peas.
8. Stir until all ingredients are coated with the sauce.

  1. Yes, I read about this "mistake" somewhere. I love it!!! Nice with own-made meat balls too but now that we're off tomato ketchup because of its wheat content, we'd probably have to use tomato puree instead. Just found out that Camel light soy sauce does not contain wheat - what joy!!! The Tamari you suggested is nice but it's almost RM20 a bottle here, way too expensive!

    1. Oh, I did not realize that tomato ketchup contains wheat. I guess you have become more vigilant reading food labels now. It's great that you found wheat-free soya sauce. Yes, Tamari is pricey. I don't use it anymore.

    Your "mistake" remind me my old neighbour when i was in Ipoh. She also shared with me almost the same thing but the beef is replaced with pork. Ya...may be is the time for me to cook this yummy dish again, thanks for bringing back such a sweet memory.

  4. Cooking (and eating) beef by the generation before us is certainly something not very common to me (especially in a Chinese family). My mom has never cooked beef in her days...to this day we still can't get her to eat beef (and it's not because of religious beliefs). She says it's too "sow"...kekeke! Your grandma's beefsteak is more like beef meatballs...and I love any kind of meatballs....beef, pork, chicken, fish, crab, squid...but no lamb please! ;D

    1. In my family, grandma and grandpa loved beef and mutton :) I take it that you don't like the strong smell of lamb. If it is prepared correctly with spices, it can be delicious. I was quite put off once at a buffet where the lamb was extremely "smelly". I had a bite and that's it >.<

  5. How I wished I had such loving grandma who ruled the kitchens with her culinary skills like yours. The whole dish is so colourful and very appetizing. I could clearly see that your photography skills get better from time to time by seeing how often you made me drool. I think it is sinful to make people drool and deprive them the chance to bite and savour.

Your grandma's "mistake" reminded me of my mom's pronunciation in certain words, like Jaya Jusco, it is pronounced as Jaya Jako, Tesco become Teko, my nephew Lucas became Nugget.. and till today, even when she is not around, I am still using her words in my mouth... by the way, this dish is my kids' favourite too, replacing with pork instead of beef... :)

  16. Hi Phong Hong, Happy New Year. My mum called her fried meatballs 'bakstake'. Initially, I couldn't catch the meaning. Anyway, their recipes are no mistakes, Hahaha! always good but only problem, my mum cooks them too often.
