Halloween is not in Malaysian culture but it has been sometime now that this American culture crept into ours.
Halla Holla has jumped on the Halloween bandwagon and curated these Halloween specials - Blueberry Longan Panna Cotta and Pumpkin Seed & Cranberry Cookies.
I was there yesterday for the Sandwich of The Day : Smoky Sea.
This is meant to look like two eyeballs lying in a pool of blood. I mean, in Halloween spirit, right? When I went to pay for my meal, the pretty cashier observed that most customers find this dessert scary. It is unfortunate that this dessert is not well received. Really?
A longan stuffed with a blueberry to look like an eyeball is not scary to me. In fact I thought it was cute. Maybe it's because I watch a lot of horror movies and it takes a lot to scare me.
I recently finished Monster : The Ed Gein Story and it was crap. Too highly fictionalized and full of ridiculous fantasy. But on the positive side ... Charlie Hunnam ... ehek..ehek..ehek...
The next Monster instalment is Lizzie Borden and I hope they stick to a decent storyline and dispense with Ryan Murphy's silly/sick fantasies. Sorry, I digress.
Now back to the "scary" panna cotta. I liked it a lot. It's not too sweet with the panna cotta being on the firm side. I won't mind having this dessert again.
When I told my partner about this, his opinion is that many people (I take it Chinese people) are superstitious and want to distance themselves from anything to do with Halloween.
Oh, do you know that there is a brand of sparkling water in the USA called Liquid Death? We will never find that product sold here.

Hi dear friend, the eyeballs creep me out! LOL! Wonderful photos. I absolutely love smoked salmon!!! Here it is common for people to order (at a delicatessen) a bagel with Lox (this is what smoked salmon is sometimes called here) and cream cheese. It is fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing.
Good morning ๐๐ rise and shine. I still remember the Halloween Stampede incident that happened a few years ago (in Korea?) Sometimes a "fun" occasion and event can turn out to be a tragedy and disaster. I am a careful person. Yes, your partner is right, most Chinese are pantang, I thought I remember you saying, you yourself is a pantang person too, hee hee. My Buddy Jose is into these horror genre too and she is fascinated cos she has ้ด้ณ็ผ,the "third" eye which can see those "ghosts", it is real, why would she want to scare me since I am her friend. Another girlfriend also can see those spirit and ghost ๐ป and she on the lights when she is sleeping. I love the ๐ฅช sandwiches at Halla holla especially this smoky salmon one with coffee and a biscuit ๐ช a filling and satisfying meal.
ReplyDeleteI wish I have Halla Holla near me....and an offer for a discounted sandwich on different days of the week (and I'll definitely go for the beef or avocado). The dessert is not scary (and I do love anything blueberry), just not pretty is a better definition, I think....coz usually people like to eat pretty desserts.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch horror movies at all and I find your photo 1 quite off putting. Won't be eating that ๐
