My Delicious Deep Fried Meatballs

I'll have to admit that fried meatballs are tastier than baked ones. They look a lot better too, all nice and golden brown. Don't you agree?

But of course, they are oilier and you waste quite a bit of oil in the process of deep frying. 


As you can see from the photo above, I was too generous with corn. Not only were corn inside the meatballs, they were sticking on the outside too. And yes, some fell off and I had to scoop them out with a slotted ladle.


What makes meatballs delicious are the ingredients and seasonings that you mix into it. I notice that the orang putih  use breadcrumbs as a binding agent but I have never used those before. And neither has my mum or my late grandmother.

The usual suspects in my meatballs are always carrots, onions, spring onions (or sometimes chives), light soy sauce (I used to use salt but now prefer soy sauce) and loads of pepper. And yes, the occasional corn. I also tend to use garlic powder (instead of fresh) as it distributes more evenly into the meatballs. 


These days, to make finely chopped carrots, I simply grate them (onto my chopping board) using my trusty box grater. Then I take a knife and simply chop them up to get finer bits of carrots. Why, I even grate the onions along too hee..hee...

I actually love making meatballs because it's easy. Just mix up the minced meat and all the other ingredients together until they form a sticky mass before forming them into balls or patties.

Then you can deep fry, pan fry or bake them in the oven. You can eat the meatballs as is with chili sauce or tomato ketchup or mix them up with baked beans (I love this!). Or make a sweet and sour sauce and you get some sort of sweet and sour meatballs.

Instead of making meatballs you can also use the mixture to stuff bittergourd (or whatever veges that can be stuffed) like what I did here.

Deep Fried Meatballs

Ingredients :
- 300g minced meat
- 1/2 a small carrot, grated and minced
- 1 small red onion, finely minced (you can do like I do, grate it along with the carrot and then mince)
- 1/2 cup corn kernels (optional)
- 2 tbsp finely sliced spring onions or chives
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tbsp light soy sauce (or to taste)
- 1 tsp pepper (or to taste)
- 1 tablespoon cornflour
- 1 egg

Method :
1. Mix all the ingredients up until the mixture is well combined and sticky.
2. Form into balls or patties.
3. Fry in hot oil until golden brown.
4. Drain on paper towels and serve warm.

  1. Looks good! I'd let mine stand on kitchen towels to soak the excess oil. If the oil is hot enough, it will not be too oily.

  3. I've used breadcrumbs before in my meatballs (I think I first learned that from Jamie Oliver) and I have to say that the meatballs are indeed more juicy with it. I use it if I happen to have stale bread in my fridge, otherwise I would omit it. It's particularly good when there's a sauce involved, like when you're making meatballs spaghetti as I believe (my rationale lah) that the breadcrumbs in the meatballs soak up the sauce thereby making them more juicy. If making fried meatballs, I'm thinking the breadcrumbs may belp to soak up the egg and add moisture to the meatballs. ^_~

  4. So tasty! I wanna eat but don't wanna make cos I am plain lazy. Are you working only a certain hours in the office as stated by the SOP? I am not sure whether anyone is following it or not.

  5. You are so clever and I should give you an Oscar Award. I definitely agree that fried ones are better as the bakes ones would be dry and need to be immersed in gravy sauce to eat.
    I would enjoy your balls with generous corn and carrots that would make the texture yummy. Why don't you retire in 2021 and open a cafe in BU? I will be your waiter, a very funny one.

  7. I will use breadcrumbs for my meatballs as I have my homemade breadcrumbs which forever cannot finish in my pantry. LOL
    I prefer oven bake because it's less hassle and not need to use oil. Another alternative is air fryer but only for small batch as mine is small capacity.
