Sarawak Laksa

After trying Kampua Mee at SRK Noodle House (CLOSED) I dropped by again. That first Kampua Mee did not impress me but I wasn't going to let that first impression deter me from at least giving the well known East Malaysian noodle another chance.

This time I tried the Spicy Black Sauce Kampua Mee

I must say that I liked this one way way better than the first. Perhaps it was the savory black sauce that added more dimension to the flavors compared to the plain version.

Since I was so pleased with my lunch, I made it a point to come back to try the Sarawak Laksa. I have eaten Sarawak Laksa before, cooked at home. Other than that, I have not eaten Sarawak Laksa anywhere else.

So I went in with no expectations, lest I be disappointed.

This one is served with char siew, fish cakes and very thinly (so thin!) sliced omelette. No, no poached chicken. For the noodles, you have a choice of either meehoon or kampua mee. I stuck with meehoon of course.

Just in case you were wondering, yes, there were prawns in the laksa.

There were three in fact. The prawns were very firm and crunchy.

The laksa came with a condiment served in a sauce plate. I was wondering what it was until I tasted and discovered that it was lime juice. Apparently, they squeeze it for you instead of serving you the whole lime.

I thought the laksa was good. Good level of lemak and aromatic with spices. I would definitely return should I have a Sarawak Laksa craving.

This was how much I liked it :)

  3. I never know our Sarawak laksa have char siew and fish cake. Here in Kuching, we have prawns, taugeh, shredded chicken and sliced omelette in our laksa.

  4. Not very authentic Sarawak laksa. Very creamy and more like curry. Sarawak laksa broth is different.

You should try my friend's shop in Kelana Jaya. 7th Mile Kitchen. They serve nice Kuching's specialty dishes like kolo mee, laksa and tomato noodle.

Check out their FB page https://m.facebook.com/7thMileKitchenQiLiXiang/

  6. OMG! OMG! You habis jilat the whole bowl kering and sparkling bersih berseri! Wakakaka

I love to eat Sarawak Laksa too and it is nothing similar to Thai Lemak or Penang Assam laksa at all. It is unique and very flavourful. I must go there to eat and lick the bowl like you till sparkling enough to comb my hair. Slurrps!

  7. I would agree with Rose - a tad too lemak...but the Sibu Foochows love it like that. Those from the place of origin, Kuching, would frown scornfully at the sight of anything like that. Everyone seems to like Auntie Christina's though I have not tried...an dyes, I've heard of that 7th Mile Place at Kelana Jaya too:

    2. My Sibu friend, Annie, living in KL, would swear by the "black kampua" - for me, it has to be white to be able to enjoy the subtle taste and fragrance, not all drowned out by the soy sauce.

    3. I thought it was nicely lemak hee..hee... I don't mind trying a few more as I do love Sarawak Laksa! Yes, that black kampua had me coming back for more :)

  9. I've not eaten many Sarawak Laksa to know which ones are good but I do know that char siew and fish cake wouldn't be in an authentic one. I've never been a fan of Sarawak laksa and that's because the broth is usually light and taste of spices...and that's why I don't like it. I know it shouldn't taste creamy like our curry laksa (or look creamy like the one you had) but I can totally understand why you like this version...I would too if it has been tweaked to taste closer to our lemak curry laksa...haha! :D

We can't deny that many KL-lang simply don't like "white-looking" noodles, we need our black sauce for more flavour so I can understand why they have to introduce black kampua for us...hehe! ;) Even for dry pan mee, they now ask us if we want white or black....kekeke! ;P

    1. Yes, I was rather surprised by the char siew and fish cake. If the broth had been light, I guess I would have another opinion hee..hee..

I agree, black means delicious! In fact I quite like the black spicy pan mee at Go Noodle.

  18. I have tried the one in Aunty Christina's in Seapark and it is absolutely yummy and so is their kolok mee. You must try it. I actually just tried the SRK Noodle House on Monday and had the Kampua Mee and like you found it disappointing. But the picture of the Sarawak Laksa does look yums.

  19. I can see the meehoon is not the usual meehoon as they are slightly curly which I think are those with more springy texture, am I right?
