Creepy

Does that doll look cute to you? Not to me. Dolls give me the creeps. Maybe I watch too many scary movies.

When I was growing up, I was fascinated with the paranormal and occult. It was a time when parents/guardians were more relaxed when bringing up children.

Life was less complicated then and the world was a safer place. Children were allowed to roam free in the playground and neighborhood. It was also a time when cinemas did not have ratings.

Back then (in my case at least), there was no fear of trauma or psychological damage and I tagged along to scary movies. My earliest recollection of the cinema was waking up in the dark on my grandma's lap to the sight of a man (Dracula?) drinking from a goblet.

"What's that?" I asked, to which grandma coolly replied "He is drinking blood". It didn't quite register, this drinking blood business, so I continued sucking at my milk bottle.

Is Damansara Uptown really going to get clean?

On another occasion, I remember seeing a lady in the buff (only her back and bum was visible) stepping into a bath tub filled with flowers. And I thought to myself, how nice it is to soak oneself in a tub of flowers. I remember nothing else from that movie.

And then there was this one movie that made an impression on me. It was some sort of Chinese sword fighting movie where there were scenes of heads being chopped off. I didn't have my milk bottle to distract me.

The day after the movie, I walked in on my grandpa sleeping, covered from head to toe with his blanket. I burst into tears thinking that grandpa lost his head like in the movie (Kong-Kong boh thau! waaaaaahhh....!!!!). He woke up of course, assuring me that his head was very much intact. For a while, grandpa was not allowed to cover his head.

Somebody must have been spring cleaning the kids' closet.
Then when I was older (primary school), I watched the 1970s series The Sixth Sense (together with my grandparents) starring Gary Collins. I don't remember much from that series but I know that it dealt with things that go bump in the night.

Up to this day, I love scary movies. The scarier the better. But now it takes a lot more to scare me. My all time favorite scary movie is Don't Be Afraid of The Dark (1973). Don't bother watching the remake. This 1973 version gave me the creeps when I was in standard 6 and it still gives me the creeps to this very day.

Are you Annabelle's sister?
Grandma used to remind me not to pick up any discarded dolls or bottles no matter how pretty they are because they could be housing spirits.

Have I had any creepy real life experiences? Oh yes. I wrote about it once here.

  7. I remember when I was very young my parents brought me to the cinema to watch a Chinese medusa movie. So frightening with all the snakes on the head. Parents last time like you wrote don't think much about protecting children from watching inappropriate movies.

    1. I also watched one Chinese movie involving snakes. I must have been in primary school then. If I remember correctly, this guy turns into a snake after midnight. His wife or girlfriend or whatever became pregnant and someone attacked her by cutting her belly in the woods. Lots and lots of baby snakes came out from her tummy. Eeeeeee!!!!

  11. as a kid, i used to be spooked out by any shows or books involving the devil and hell ... but as an adult, i don't believe in the devil or hell anymore, so i guess i'm less easily spooked. but i do get easily creeped out by horror movies, since the scares can be quite chilling while you're watching the show :)

    1. I can't understand why I enjoy being spooked. Thai horror movies are pretty good. I watched Shutter and was quite spooked by the ending.

  13. Me too.. dolls are creepy to me, yes, we watched too many horror movies, like Chucky for instance. I love watching them though most times I squint my eyes when I know the image is real scary, I don't want it to make an impact on me when I sleep! But still I like to watch wor.. not alone of course, the more the merrier.. younger days, I watched too much Christopher Lee in dracula, his teeth scares me terribly! Hey, I remember the Sixth Sense.. heehehe.. you terror, can still remember Gary Collins, the name.. Nice series really!

  14. You are so me, PH! Dolls are creepy to me too, I never like dolls, but I don't mind teddy bears, rabbits, toy dogs, etc (all the animals), I just don't like human form toys

  16. It's such a waste for people to throw out dolls and teddy bears if they are still in a repairable (by that time, parts where you can rectify with a needle and threat) condition... I was heavily influenced by Barbie dolls as a young girl. Speaking of movies, I tried watching Poltergeist once. I summoned the courage to borrow the DVD and could feel chills resting at the base of my spine not long after I watched it.

    1. Aiyo...scared lah to listen to your stories hah..hah... Actually it is nice to gather around past midnight hah..hah... and tell these stories though it can mean staying sleepless from the fear. My grandpa did that once with his nieces when they came to visit. I was a little girl at the time and I also joined in to listen!
