My Meat-Free Salad

After my not so satisfactory outing at The Salad Bar, I simply had to make my own salad. As I mentioned before, I wanted to do penance for overindulging at a buffet. I ate too much meat and therefore, I needed to go meat-free at least for a day.

My favorite choice of protein in a salad would be hard boiled eggs. So I boiled some. Then I thought, I needed more protein, in the form of vegetable protein. So I fried up some tempeh and tofu. I realized that I bought the soft type of tofu instead of the hard one. Never mind.

The egg, tempeh and tofu would help keep me full, I hope. I know that just eating vegetables won't be enough. I don't want to go hungry one hour later and start chewing up the tortilla chips that I stashed away for a future Nachos.

For the dressing, I went for a fusion of vinaigrette and Kewpie Sesame dressing. That's because there was barely enough Kewpie dressing. I forgot to stock up.

The dressing was heavy on the vinaigrette and was therefore on the runny side. It was a tad sour too. But it was fine by me. Contrary to popular belief, there are fat people who do like sour things hah...hah...hah...

It was not bad, this meat-free meal. But....two hours later I was hungry. So I walloped one hard boiled egg that I stashed in the fridge and I was good. That's the reason why I find it hard to become a vegetarian. I have tried, believe me. I guess I am going to stay the way I am and have my meat-free days in between.

I'll have to say that I did feel lighter that day. If I could keep this up more often, who knows, I won't be so fat anymore hah..hah...hah....

  1. I see tempeh! My missus bought some that day, still sitting the fridge. Will just wait and see what she will do with it...eventually! Should be a great replacement for croutons in salads, eh? Looks good, yours! I don't mind the slightly sour salad dressing, not too sour...sorry. Just a hint of it is fine.

    1. I love tempeh cooked in sambal with ikan bilis and peanuts. I wonder how your missus will cook the tempeh. Deep fried with turmeric and salt is also very nice.

  2. I feel you. I cannot turn vegetarian for the same reason. Some people just don't get it. So when they say "Can one, you think you feel hungry without meat, it is all psychological!", I will reply "Yalo, can one, you think you feel hungry without rice, it is also psychological!". After that, they will say "But, it's different!", and I will reply "Yup, one is protein and one is carbs, really different!"

So nowadays, nobody try to persuade me to be vegan/vegetarian anymore. :P

  7. Hi Phong Hong,
Once I was very disciplined on "eating grass" ... but lasted for 3 days only ... hee ... hee ! Then I switched to a more "flavourful salad" ... Gado Gado ! Somehow the tau kwa and peanut sauce kept me full and won't munch in between snacks... still it didn’t last long.
Your plate of salad looks good. Shall I start 'salad days' again ... ^-^!

  8. I see meatless salad, but I terus see hardboiled eggs in your first picture, and the first thing I think is: I will eat this, coz got eggs.. Any salad which has eggs/potatoes/grilled chicken in it, I sure eat.. Then I read on, got Kewpie sesame dressing also, wah, lagi I will eat.. The Kewpie sesame dressing is really nice, I don't like lettuce also I will eat if I banjir the lettuce with this sesame dressing, wakakakaka..

    3. like you, I think I cannot be a permanent vegetarian also, temporarily then I guess should be fine.. I just think we need nutrients from a sources of food, do not limit that but in the end just eat moderately.. that would be the key to good health.. :)

    4. Ya lah, moderation is the key. I must have meat in my meals or else I will go hungry within a short while.

  10. Just like you, I like to have salads too as my meal after having over-indulged but, just like you, I don't know why, the hunger pang hits me within the next 1 - 2 hours....and I have to go look for something else to eat....and that defeats the purpose of eating a salad in the first place.

I'd like eggs and tofu in my salad too but not tempeh.....I hate tempeh! :D

    1. When I first ate tempeh, I thought it was really weird. Didn't quite warm up to the taste but somehow it grew on me and I have been loving it since. I will only feel satiated if my salad has meat in it.

  13. Hi Phong Hong, given a choice, I would trade my meat dish with this salad. This is considered a good platter for me. Today's news on radio, eat meat in moderation cos' it is the main cause of colon cancer. Huh! why yummy food aren't healthy....
