Gu On Set Lunch

I love set lunches in particular ones that are served in a tray.

I don't know what it is about the tray that attracts me so.

One day at lunch I found myself at Gu On, The Starling

The photo attracted me and oh my, what a nice tray. LOL!

After going through all the options, I chose the Smoked Pork Belly.

On the table were these three side dishes - kimchi, kohlrabi and macaroni salad.

I got me sparkling water (you can also choose still water) just in case I need to clear my throat. This is priced at RM3.00.

If there is another diner, you are charged another RM3.00 for an extra cup. The water is refillable but it is a lot of water and not likely to be finished in a single sitting by a lone diner.

There is a drawer at the table (both sides) where the cutleries and tissue paper are stored.

There is also a call button in case you need assistance.

Ah! Lunch is served!

At the center is the Pot Rice topped with sliced smoked pork belly, a few slices of mushrooms, raw egg yolk and spring onions.

From left to right - kombucha, soy sauce, omelette, kimchi, ssamjang and seaweed soup.

I wasn't sure how to proceed so I just mixed the raw egg yolk into the hot rice.

The smoked pork belly was very tasty but the portion was small (not enough for me LOL!). The rice is quite a big portion. I find it too much but managed to eat it all. The eryngii mushrooms were thick and chewy.

The soup was all right, light tasting and pleasant.

Had I read the fine print that a drink was included in the set, I would not have ordered the sparkling water. The kombucha was very refreshing and it was not sweet, just the way I like it. Now, the soy sauce (in the cute pot) was of good quality and tasted very nice mixed with the rice.

The side dishes were more than enough and I did not need to replenish the kimchi. You can go to the counter to help yourself with condiments and side dishes of the day.

Overall, I enjoyed this set lunch very much and my only complaint is not enough meat. I guess I cannot expect more protein at the prices charged but all in all it was worth it.

I will be back!

A walk to run off the glucose spike hah..hah..hah...

And might I add - eating good food!

  1. Dear friend, that quote is fantastic! I love the presentations in your lovely photos! The trays and seeing how the meals are placed on these trays reminds me of Mei, the Japanese lady on YouTube who does videos of her life...the one with the three cats. Her meals are very similar to the presentations in your photos, mostly on trays but sometimes on placemats, but different dishes, etc.
I am not familiar with some of the foods you talk about in these dishes, but I enjoyed seeing your photos and hearing your thoughts on the food!

  2. Looks like a good meal except not enough protein. My weak teeth won't be able to manage the eryngii mushrooms so thanks for the warning ⚠️
Wishing you a terrific Thursday 🌺🌹

  3. Thanks for sharing your lovely dining experience, photos and the steps and I am glad it was a good one after all. I have yet to set a date to go Itacho Sushi to try Yellowtail or Tuna Sashimi as per my comment in Kris's blog.
