So Where is the Birthday Cake?

No fancy cakes for me, please. So. I bought myself a cake. Ah Mah Traditional Egg Sponge Cake to be exact.

This sponge cake outlet opened some weeks ago.

I have not tried any of those famous Taiwanese sponge cakes where I hear the queue is a few miles long. Now that we have a sponge cake outlet at The Starling, I won't have to go far when I want me a good old fashioned sponge cake.

So this Ah Hong Chee went to kepoh-kepoh one evening.

I went to kacau this young man while he was taking out a freshly baked sponge cake from the oven. I asked him if it is OK for me to snap some pics while he was at it. He kindly obliged. That's the nice thing about turning 50. People tend to oblige old ladies.

See he even held a pose for me.

He told me one cake like this weighs about 6-7kg. Wow. This Ah Hong Chee got no strength to flip a cake like this for sure.

Look at that. Just like a pillow.

Then he measures the cake with a metal ruler before proceeding to slice into it.

The cake is sliced soon after taken out of the oven. You can see steam coming out from the cake and the insides are still jiggly.

There you have it, 8 slabs of very eggy and aromatic cake.

Then these are packed into boxes.

A day or two later, I went to buy one for myself (I already bought two earlier as gifts). The nice young man was there and I was lucky to get a freshly baked cake. I even got all fussy on him and asked for one from the center (less crust).

The plain egg sponge cake costs RM13.00. Very reasonable price. The cheese is RM18.00 I think. There is also chocolate flavor. But I prefer the original.

Still warm when I took it home.

Smells wonderful.

Love the taste and texture. Cottony soft and since it was still warm, it made the experience all the better.

It made for a very nice birthday cake.

I was very happy with the cake. Highly recommended. Will buy it again when the egg sponge cake craving hits me.

  1. Not the original over-rated expensive Taiwan franchise, eh? Many places have come out with their own now, even here. Nicer...but not really cheap either. Selling like hot cakes, so to speak.

  2. I was just having a conversation with hubby about birthday cakes this week. He recently had one (and mine is coming up). He loves carrot and cheesecakes. I'm not really a big cake person, though I do have a bit of thing for the raw cakes that are a trend at the moment.

  4. Someone gifted us with a box a few months ago, the cheese flavour one. The box is different, yellow box, so probably from another baker. Both hubby and me did not like it. Thought that the texture is too cottony spongy and quite bland in taste. But then I am not a fan of cottony sponge cakes. I prefer our local chiffon cake anytime!

  6. When I saw the first pic, instantly I thought Taiwan original cake...but then I saw lines on them! >.< Scroll a few pics down...ah, it's the wire rack again (they need to get a plank like the other place...hehe!). This looks exactly like the other one...but cheaper! ;) Not sure if it's the same size, this one is cut to 8 slabs, the other cut into 10. Wonder if it tastes the same. I've still haven't gotten round to eating one yet.

  7. I have tried this Ah Mah cake a month ago at Centrepoint. The shop was empty and gone are all the crazy queues at any sponge cake shops now. The crowds have disappeared like hangat tahi ayam. All the tahi has evaporated oledi! It might rain this ayam shit today.

We tried the cheese flavour and Ah Mah sure baked very well. I wanna buy again tomorrow. I am shocked to hear that the cake weighed 6-7 kgs. That young man must have very muscular arms! Why didn't you flirt with him to toss the cake and flip open his shirt to show you his 6 pack abs! That would be a nice birthday sight.

  14. So many brands of this Taiwanese eggy cake appeared in the market now and I've tried the pioneer one. My verdict is it tasted just like normal sponge cake, not worthy to queue, but if no queue then I'll buy, hehe :P
