Banana and Mixed Berries Smoothie

Many years ago, and I mean many years ago, I used to have banana smoothies for breakfast. At that time, I was very fit. I used to be able to jump rope for 45 minutes non-stop. Really.

Unbelievable as it may seem, that was true. I mean the jumping rope part. But I was not consistent and soon lost my ability for endurance rope jumping. With that, my weight started to creep up on me and I stopped drinking smoothies.

Smoothies are considered to be healthy but you have to beware that bananas and other fruits contain a fair bit of carbohydrates/natural sugars and if you are not careful, you will find your weight piling up.

My smoothie is made using one banana, some frozen mixed berries, one tub of peach yogurt and some ice-cubes. I remembered offering this smoothie to my mum once and she was hesitant. It was the yogurt (I used plain yogurt) that made her apprehensive as she thought it might taste yucky.

But mum is a good sport and she sipped the smoothie tentatively. And the next thing I knew, mum was gulping down the smoothie with gusto! Right after that we tested my concoction on my dad without telling him about the yogurt. Same thing happened. Gulp, gulp, gulp! That was how delicious the smoothie was.

This smoothie is really easy to make. Just dump the banana, yogurt, frozen berries and ice cubes into the blender and whizz away. What you will get is a thick smoothie that is very tasty and filling. It is a great pick-me-up for breakfast or any time of the day.

I think I will re-introduce this banana smoothie into my breakfast routine. Moderation is key and I should only take this on days when I exercise. Perhaps the smoothie will motivate me to exercise more. Laughable. hah..hah...

If you have never had a smoothie before, you should try this. There are many variations to the recipe. You can use bananas with plain yogurt or flavored yogurt and add other fruits like dragonfruit or mangoes. So far, I only like smoothies that contain bananas. So cheers, lets's drink up to bananas!

  1. Not into smoothies. Reminds me of the time when my girl was little and took ages to start learning to eat solids and we had to blend EVERYTHING for her. :(

  2. What you say is very true about smoothies having a fair bit of carbohydrates/natural sugars and may contribute to gaining weight. I think it may even lead to diabetes if drink too much and too often.

Wow, you can skip for 45 minutes non stop! You must be really fit!!!

I usually just make cheap popsicles using bananas, yoghurt and some icing sugar.. Minus berries, hehe.. Lastime I tried strawberries and blueberries, very nice.. Oohh, gave me an idea after reading your post.. Use flavoured yoghurt instead of plain yoghurt.. Pssstt, I don't like the taste of plain yoghurt, hehe..

    1. Louiz, I also don't like the taste of plain yogurt. It's smelly to me! Yah, berries are so expensive so I only buy it once in a blue moon.

  4. I think one banana is fine lah, if you are not eating other things for breakfast. The banana is what makes you feel the "fullness" to prevent you from feeling hungry and eating other food.

  5. smoothies!!! i loooooooove smooooooooothiessssssss!!! and like you, banana and berries make a good combination.. i would love those fruity, berry, citrusy, nutty types of smoothies than those chocolate or green tea based.. hahaha, did i just tell you this in your previous post about ice-cream?? errr, basically the same principle applies to smoothies, ice-cream as well as milk shakes.. and oh, cakes as well.. i am one who enjoys chocolates or green tea themselves, but i never like things that are made of them, except the chocolate products is really rich and chocolatey then it's a different story.. :p

  6. oppps, talked too much unrelated to the smoothies, paiseh, haha!! but before that ah, i am very impressed that you could jump rope for 45 minutes!!! OMG, that is indeed a very good exercise and very "calorie hungry" to shed off all your calories.. i have heard jumping rope is even more effective than running.. so i can imagine you were the size of Small Kucing's Mamarazzi last time?? but now probably a little bit towards Small Kucing's Paparazzi?? hehehe, just kidding.. no matter what size you are, i believe you sure is a nice person to get along with.. size does not matter!!! i hope i can also jump rope for 45 minutes dei.. :)

    1. Jumping rope requires a lot of stamina and I think you know that boxers incorporate that into their training. If one is not fit, even 5 minutes of skipping is very tough. Looking back, I can't believe I was that fit! I regret not keeping up.

  7. so PH you are now making smoothies and ice-cream again!! stocked up lots of frozen berries and bananas huh?? if you have taken out your ice-cream maker earlier, i wonder if you would do something with your containers of pumpkin puree in the freezer?? hehehe, pumpkin ice-cream maybe?? who knows that would actually taste nice, probably added in some raisins or nuts or chocolate chips, and you created a new flavor then can sell your recipe to Miskin Robins already!! :D

  18. You know, I've never been terribly into smoothies, just a textural thing. I've always been of the mind that - if you want a banana... eat a banana.

    But, it IS pretty :).

Phong... I've made a huge change to my site and converted to self hosted. The RSS feed that you have for plate fodder probably wont update past the post before the switch. I'd love to continue to show up in your feed, (your readers have always been kind enough to visit :))
You'll need to refresh the link to redirect you to the new site - it's still the same URL. just new stuff

    1. Hi Toby! Yeah, I get what you mean, it's the thick gloopy texture that you don't fancy. I'm OK with it as long as it's bananas :)

No worries, I have just updated your link. I wouldn't want to miss a thing myself!
