Frozen Dessert

I went to Daiso the other day. Whenever I step into Daiso, my money never stays in my pocket. I have to buy something. Resistance is futile. But I was on a mission. To find containers for my frozen desserts!

It all started when I was browsing the frozen section at Cold Storage. Something caught my eye.

Desserts galore!

Hmmm.... this is pretty cool. I could do this at home. Make a dessert and freeze individual portions.

This is how much  it cost.
So here, look. Little containers for my frozen dessert initiative.

The thing about buying at Daiso is that you want to make sure that whatever it is that you buy is worth your RM5.00 (i.e that item is either worth less than or more or less equal to RM5.00).

Some items cost a lot  less than RM5.00 if you buy it elsewhere. For example a vegetable peeler which cost RM5.00 at Daiso can be purchased at Aeon for RM3.90. That's how Daiso makes money.

That's why I chose these containers that come in a set of three. It is more worth it compared with one small standalone container. Bloody accountant!

And so begins my project. I bake something, share some and stash away some. I have one compartment in my freezer dedicated to desserts. So now, as and when I feel like it, I can just take one (only one!) container out to defrost and enjoy.

Apa tuuuu? (What's that?)

A hidden delight....

Caaakkk!!! Tiramisu lak! (Peekaboo! It's Tiramisu!)
Remember me?

  1. Hi Phong Hong,

I laughed when I saw your buys because I thought I'm the one who always sucked into Diaso for some reasons... LOL!

Nevertheless, I like your idea... More containers to store more yummy desserts!!! Yay!

Oh yes, gotta be careful, not all the items Rm5 leh, some RM15, depends.. I can remember the pumpkin cheesecake and tiramisu la, who cannot wor.. So delicious looking wor, staring at me and say "Come eat me, no fat one"... I use recyclable plastic to freeze my meat (those tongsui takeaway plastic)..

    1. Louiz, I also like that. I will spend the whole day there if I can hah..hah... There are so many nice things and at RM5 we tend to think that it is cheap and buy. I also realise they have a section for those higher value items. For meat, I also use plastic bags like you.

  4. Those that you stash away...do they still taste as good after being frozen?

    1. Surprisingly, they taste just as good as the day they were baked. But of course if frozen for too long, the quality may deteriorate.

  6. I agree. Daiso is a very evil place that will make you part money for things you didn't think you need before you enter the shop. LOL

  12. I agree with you!!! this Daiso is a very evil place because they have so many useful stuffs as well as creative stuffs you can find in there.. and RM5 per item sounds really a bargain, of course until you paid for the things you "sapu" into your basket you only realised you have actually taken much more than you actually expected.. so a little bit here and a little bit there add up to a big sum most of the time.. with the lower Japanese yen now and all things maintained at RM5, they are actually making more handsome profits, don't you think so??

    1. SK, we buy, buy, buy and then blame Daiso for being evil LOL! Yes, some of the items are very innovative and very useful. I always ask myself - what will they think of next? Some items especially the small ones probably the cost price is below RM1.

    2. yes, true.. not everything are worth spending a RM5 inside Daiso.. be rational~~ :)

  13. yeah, and your mission may be just to get one thing but most of the time you ended up buying more, haha!! come, be frank to all of us here, Phong Hong, other than those plastic containers, what other things have you bought from Daiso?? or at least you also attempted to find something else but not available.. hehe, sorry ah, but I just am not convinced that you went all the way there, grabbed those few plastic containers, paid and left.. hahaha!! my 6th sense tells me sure got something else~~ :D

  14. aiyoh those frozen desserts surely looks good to me!! all the different striking colors are so inviting and like waving to you to lure you to buy them!! so you just took a look, get the ideas and told them, "cheh!! i also can bake all of you myself at home, and even nicer!!", flipped your hair, flicked your Gucci shades, sashayed out of the shop and gone.. xD

  15. now, that's a very smart idea to bake more and then store them in containers in the freezer, and whenever you feel like eating, you just take them out, thawed and enjoy!! reminds me of the uni days where some of us will cook food for a week, split into containers, keep in the fridge and then just microwave before serving.. and it's the same food got one whole week, haha!! of course those cakes look familiar to me, the pumpkin cheesecake, the tiramisu and the pumpkin cupcake!! awwww, I am hungry now and you are making me drool..

  17. Phong Hong,
Ha ha ! Like your post ! So true that I also "got stuck" inside Daiso. There's a store near my workplace. But there's 'no perfect timing' for me to do shopping. Lunch time is too short, cannot overrun. Once, I knocked off 'on the dot' and went to Daiso to do quick shopping and to buy dinner. Suddenly received watsapp ... my kid asked "mom are u buying dinner home?" Opps almost 7:30pm .... zoomed checked out and 'tabau' dinner! Hee hee !

  20. Looks like many of us love to go shopping at Daiso. Even when I told myself that I am just going in for window shopping, I would sure come out armed with something. What can you buy nowadays with $2.80? (Daiso here selling everything for AUD2.80).

  22. You are right to do your homework and only buy those worth RM5 items from Daiso only if it is sold at a higher price elsewhere. Very clever way of freezing dessert. Now you can have desset every day, so nice!
