Datenite @ Tonkatsu by Ma Maison, 1 Utama

Last week, my partner and I went to 1 Utama for our datenite.

We were at Tonkatsu by Ma Maison, my first visit and his second.


Outside the restaurant were these mock up of the dishes, something very familiar at Japanese restaurants.


These mock ups are rather realistic.


It gave me an idea of what to expect at Ma Maison.


I have seen other people post about their visit to Ma Maison and now I finally get to visit.


I thought we were early but the restaurant was already very busy.


On the table was a tray of these sauces and condiments.


From left to right - toasted sesame seeds, salt, soy sauce and roasted sesame dressing.


Our drinks were served first, Ice Lemon Tea (mine) and hot green tea (his). Two bowls of grated daikon were also brought to our table.


My partner had the Rosu Katsu. When I took this photo, he had already poured the roasted sesame dressing on his shredded cabbage.


Mine was the Jumbo something-something (the heaviest piece of pork on the menu at 250g). I need a lot of meat!

The breaded and deep fried pork is served with shredded cabbage (refillable), a bowl of rice, pickles and a bowl of soup (also refillable).

An empty three compartment sauce plate is also placed on the tray to pour your sauce of choice from the table.


Yes, I enjoyed the meal and I'm glad that we visited Ma Maison for the deep fried pork and raw shredded cabbage experience.


Like many restaurants, they also have a customer loyalty program where you can collect points (or in this case, p-oinks).


On our way out, I noticed Kenny Rogers Roasters next door. I remember when this restaurant first opened ages ago, it was such a sensation. I used to love their muffins. Maybe our next datenite could be at Kenny Roger's.

  1. Wah, your partner is a pro because before u even took a photo, he already put sesame dressings on the raw shredded cabbage 😋🤤
    This is one of my go to eatery for meat 💪

  2. Ahhh, good late afternoon! I am glad that you enjoyed this date night meal at Tonkatsu by Ma Maison. I like Katsu too, be it pork or chicken plus all the sauces and condiments. Both the iced lemon tea and the hot green tea sounded refreshing, fragrant and helped to quench the thirst too. At SG Saboten, not only the shredded cabbages are refillable, the rice are also refillable, great for big eaters like me hah hah! Thanks for sharing.

    1. Good afternoon! Oh ya, at Ma Maison the rice is also refillable. I just asked my partner this morning. Very ngam him because he eats lots of rice hah..hah...

  3. I went to Tonkatsu by Ma Maison a few months ago and quite like their chunky tonkatsu....yumzzz! I'm so tempted to eat KR roast chicken after seeing the picture. My last KR meal was some 2 or 3 years ago. Miss their muffins so much!

  4. Dear friend, the quotation speaks much truth! I love all your photos! I don't know what daikon is. I smiled when I saw the sign with the pig "Please wait to be seated" Very cute and creative! Thank you so much for sharing.

    1. Daikon is a white radish and it is used in Asian cooking. I used to dislike it because it has a strong smell.

  5. Forgot to menton this, but I did on Mun's blog in a comment, if I am not mistaken. The time on your blog is correct for your time. It is actually after 4 p.m. here in Montreal, not 5 p.m. On the first Sunday in November, our clocks moved back one hour "Fall back", and will be this way until March, when our clocks move forward one hour, for Daylight Savings Time. We are in the Eastern time zone.

    1. Oh yes, I have read about daylight savings. My auntie in NZ also mentioned it. Thank you for taking time to explain and now I understand it better! Don't worry about responding late. Anytime is a good time!

  6. Who doesn't like deep fried pork, right? I've had something similar (thought not Ma Maison) and thinks they're probably about the same. This kind of meal though is a bit dry for me overall though tasty. Of course, you must have the heaviest piece of pork...the jumbo something something...lol!

    1. Ah, yes I agree that it is a bit dry, Besides, the pork is lean pork but overall I find it flavorful and you are are right, we love deep fried pork hee..hee..
