My Monster Sandwich

Do you remember my pathetic attempt at Wanpaku Sando/Wanpaku Sandwich? Well, after making that very messy and challenging sandwich, I never made it again.

Then recently, I was left with 4 slices of ham and 2 slices of bak kwa in the fridge/freezer. And prior to that I watched many Youtube videos showing these gorgeous sandwiches being made at cafes in Japan and Korea.

The people who made these sandwiches obviously are very experienced and it was a joy watching them constructing and then expertly wrapping and slicing these sandwiches. I was so inspired.

I was so stoked that I bought the sandwich wrapping papers. They make the sandwiches look extra special.

On Sunday I bought a loaf of Gardenia white sandwich bread and a packet of baby romaine lettuce. I already had tomatoes and all the rest of the ingredients in the fridge.

When I got home, I washed and drained the lettuce and sliced the tomatoes. To prevent the tomatoes from releasing a lot of juice, I laid the tomato slices on a piece of kitchen towel and then topped with another piece of kitchen towel to absorb the excess moisture.

Then I cooked the omelettes and set them aside to cool. I also sliced up some onions simply because I love raw onions in my sandwiches. The ham and bak kwa were taken out from the fridge/freezer to come to room temperature/thaw.

The main challenge of making Wanpaku Sandwich is keeping all the ingredients in place because there are so many ingredients piled in between the bread. The trick is to use cling wrap to hold the sandwich firmly in place. Unless if you are very adept, you only need to use the wrapping paper.

Since I am no expert, I wrapped the sandwich with cling wrap first and then with the colorful wrapping paper. To slice the sandwich, I used my trusty serrated bread knife and it sliced the sandwich easily and very neatly.

The cross section of the sandwich is so pretty as you can see the layered colors and textures.

Can you see what I put into my sandwich?

I spread a thin layer of Kewpie mayo on the bread first and then piled on the following :

- lettuce
- sliced tomato
- ham
- sliced onion
- cheese
- sliced tomato
- bak kwa
- lettuce
- omelette

Then finish with another slice of bread. I wrapped the sandwich with cling wrap making sure to gently press the sandwich to ensure that it is secure.

After that I wrapped the sandwich with the wrapping paper. That was when I realized that the paper I bought was too small! No worries, I used two pieces and it worked.

Because this sandwich is so loaded with ingredients, one sandwich is already very satiating and will keep you full until your next meal.

I will be making these sandwiches again with other fillings and I am very happy that my attempt at Wanpaku Sando was successful this time :)

  7. Your wanpanku sando looks like the real deal! ;) I'd have trouble fitting that thick and wide sandwich into my mouth...wakakakaka! :D It's something I won't be making anytime soon coz I don't have a trusted serrated knife...kekeke. P/S: Now what are you going to do with all that extra sandwich wrapping papers? Lol! ^_~

  10. I really love your Monster Sandwich. I would say it's like Japanese style that's always neat, prim & proper. I first saw all nicely wrapped sandwiches in Japan and not the West. Kudos to you. I will copy your style soon but probably use duck tape to wrap. Lolol

    1. I admit it was quite stressful making this sandwich due to the layering and the wrapping part was a challenge too!
