I Don't Like Japanese Curry

But this one changed my mind. This Japanese Curry Chicken Don by Don by TSF via AirAsia Food (non-halal) is what I had for lunch today.

The reason why I decided to try it is because the curry paste is made from scratch and not those ready made ones. So I was curious.

And yes, it was very good, unlike the ones that I have eaten at Japanese restaurants. This one is more alive with the aromatic undertones of curry as we know it locally. But of course, don't compare this to Indian curry or Malay curry or Chinese curry that you get at chap fan stalls. It is obviously not the same.

This don comes with deep fried chicken thigh chunks, doused in homemade Japanese curry sauce (with carrots and onions), rice, soft boiled egg and pickled cucumber. It was a very generous serving, I was so full after this meal.

Of course I had to order my default favorites.

The Soy Glazed Eggplant. I just love this dish.

I was pleasantly surprised to find an egg, compliments from the chef.

My other favorite side is the Don's Chili Tofu. So good!

These two dishes are of course best consumed right away but I kept them for my dinner. Since I was ordering a don, why not order more for later, right?

At the moment there is a promo code that entitles you to a 20% discount with minimum spend of RM20.00 (discount capped at RM8.00). Use the code DONTSF and order here. I am not paid to promote this yah, jangan salah faham pulak. Just spreading the word. All good things must be shared.

In my opinion Don by TSF deserve to do well simply because not only is the food well prepared and tastes awesome, but much care and effort has been taken in the food presentation as well.

A word on the AirAsia food delivery platform. So far I find that the delivery is reliable and the food arrives on time and in good condition.

I usually pre-order the day before and will leave a remark in the order instruction that this is a pre-order to avoid confusion of the part of the supplier. I guess I have a few more restaurant to try out on AirAsia Food.

  1. Japanese curry are sweeter and less spicy. Not really a fan of it too. But your Japanese Curry Chicken Don look so good with carrots, onions, soft boiled egg and fried chicken chunks. The eggplants and the chili tofu make very nice snacks too. Did you eat the eggplants and tofu with rice?

    1. This Japanese curry is not sweet, maybe that's another reason why I prefer it. Yes, I ate the eggplants and chili tofu with rice. So good!

  2. The way you write it, I wanna try the tofu and brinjal side dishes instead of main dish though I love to eat japanese curry which is on the sweet side. Are you still getting free delivery from AirAsia for this Don by tsf?

  4. I am rather fond of Japanese curry. I find it more balanced than many so I can appreciate the flavours rather than be overwhelmed by spice. (The Yum List)

    1. Ah, I understand you! Japanese curry is milder and more agreeable to the western palate.

  5. I thought...me too....when I saw your post title...only to realise that you found a Japanese curry that you did like. I tried it a few times, the final time being at a Japanese curry specialist...and still didn't like it. I wonder if I'd like this one like you did (probably this one is not a proper Japanese curry but tweaked to suit our local tastebuds?). A Japanese curry tastes more like a potato stew to me than our proper local curry with well-balanced (and cooked) spices and the all important santan...haha! ;D Japanese curry, I think, appeals more to those people who are not used to our Asian curries.

    1. I also have a feeling that this curry paste is tweaked to suit our local tastebuds. It is quite different from the usual ones which were on the sweet side. I agree, it is more for people who are not used to our more punchy curries.

  6. I have tasted Japanese curry rice once, not to my liking. It wasnt that spicy and it was towards sweeter version. It was rather weird for me to taste a sweet curry. Since then, I never try other Japanese curry.

    1. I felt that way too the first time I tried Japanese curry. But I kept trying just to see the difference and now found one to my liking.

  7. Your photography skill makes anything looks so yummy and enticing!

Japanese curry is not one of my favourite but Hubby and Son like them so I learn how to make them and cook it occasionally.

    1. Oh, thank you for your kind compliments! I see that you have two Japanese curry fans at home. I have seen the ready made Japanese curry paste and of course I never bought any.

  8. I tasted Japanese curry before, I also don't like it so much cos of the sweetness or perhaps I am used to our own Malaysian curry. But this one must be good since it is made from scratch to suit our Malaysian buds! hahaha...

    1. Very true lah, once we have tasted our own curries, Japanese curries no fight! But this one I think was adjusted to suit our taste which is why I liked it.

  9. food presentation is a must for Japanese food...the colour must varied and food must arranged nicely. So I guess they have did a good job in it.

  11. Did you found that the apps is a bit slow and not really user friendly? I tried a few times and found that it was quite slow responding. :P
