Chef Omar Nasi Lemak Kukus, Damansara Uptown (CLOSED)

After many days of indulging in K food, it is time to divert to another K - nasi lemak Kukus and nasi Kerabu. Did I hear a sigh of relief? wahahaha!!!

Last year (or was it the year before), a fish head noodle shop  (Restoran Gou Lou) closed down and was replaced by another fish head noodle shop (Claypot XO Fish Head Noodles). That replacement also turned turtle. And in its place came Chef Omar Nasi Lemak Kukus.

That's Chef Omar standing right outside his shop.
I noticed this place early this year when renovations were taking place (it is along the same row as OCBC Bank, opposite Starbucks). I was quite excited because of the "nasi lemak kukus".

If I am not wrong Chef Omar Nasi Lemak Kukus opened just before the MCO. I did not visit back then and it was only this week that I decided to pop in.

That's Chef Omar again. There is a caricature of him on the wall.
This restaurant is small and the set up is neat and tidy. There is ample seating during off peak hours and that's the time that I would visit.

E-wallets are welcome and that's a plus point for me. I wish more eateries would accept e-wallets.

It has the typical Malay restaurant set up with the food counter up front for you to select your dishes.

The specialty here is of course the nasi lemak kukus and nasi kerabu.

The menu is set on the wall and you can see all the dishes that are offered.

It's a bit small for you to see so let me enlarge it for you.

This is the nasi lemak and nasi kerabu sets.

And then there are other items and add ons.

The very nice girl who takes care of the food counter told me that you could opt of nasi putih (plain rice) to go with your choice of dishes if you prefer.

On my first visit, instead of nasi lemak, I was enticed by the nasi kerabu. How could I not, right?

Nasi Kerabu + Rendang Mutton (RM13.90). Whoohoo!! It was so good! What is sorely missing is the raw vegetables (ulam) that usually accompany nasi kerabu.

Instead of ulamonion kerabu is served with sliced lemongrass and finely chopped bunga kantan (these are placed underneath the onions) for the fragrance. The onion kerabu complemented the rendang mutton very well. I always love onions with meat.

Don't be alarmed by the abundance of onions because these are marinated in lime juice which mellows its bite and taste. Though I must say that it would be nice if some form of ulam is served as part of the nasi kerabu. The sambal is regular sambal belacan and I have no complaints.

The mutton rendang I must say is superb and they are generous with the serving portion. It is something I would definitely return for.

At the end of my meal, I was treated to a complimentary dessert. It was a mango jelly and some chewy bits of something with santan. It was very refreshing.

Of course I had to come back for the nasi lemak kukus.

I chose the Nasi Lemak + Ayam Goreng Berempah (RM10.90). I also ordered a teh o limau ais (RM3.00).

The rice is very aromatic and the grains were well separated, just the way I like it. The sambal is sweetish and savory, another thumbs up from me. The fried chicken was well marinated but I found it a bit tough.

I enjoyed this nasi lemak kukus and I am glad that I have a peaceful place to come to (instead of the other one that is forever crowded heh..heh...) when I crave for nasi lemak. I will definitely will come back to enjoy it with other choices of protein.

And oh! Another surprise dessert hee...hee... red beans with those chewy things (I like!) and santan

Today I was supposed to go try QinHe Gu's kimchi jigae (hah...hah....) but no, I came back to Chef Omar for another round of nasi kerabu heh..heh...heh...

With rendang mutton again and this time I added on some acar (which set me back RM3.00) for more enjoyment.

My tummy is very happy and contented today. If you like this type of food and if you happen to be in Damansara Uptown, do swing by for a spot of Chef Omar's nasi lemak kukus or nasi kerabu.

  2. This is so tempting. I may drop by to buy takeaways when I am in that area. Rendang mutton and rendang daging is my target. I wonder for the fried prawn, is it with shell or without shell?

    1. I have not tried the prawns but I think they are most likely in shells for better presentation.

  7. If I'm not mistaken, I think this is the same one (now rebranded as Chef Omar Nasi Lemak Kukus?) that was previously under the name of Pak Omar Nasi Lemak Kukus in Publika which has since closed. How I know? I recognised his face (from his Facebook) to the old photos of Pak Omar. Not sure why that one closed but surely can't be because of the food coz the food in your photos look tempting. When I clicked on the video in his Facebook, I was surprised to hear his Chinese accent (I later read somewhere that his name is Omar Chee...Chinese Muslim?). Well, his nasi lemak sambal certainly don't look like the Chinese-type (thankfully)...haha! ;D
