Trying Something Different@Mr Tuk Tuk

This is another of many visits to one of my favorite restaurants, Mr Tuk Tuk@The Starling. It was on an evening a few months ago with my brother.

On this visit, I told my brother  that we must try other dishes on the menu that we have not tried yet. Of course we still ordered our favorites which is the Tom Yam Fried Rice....

....and Mango Salad.

I let my brother have the fried rice all to himself because I wanted to avoid carbs. My brother loves fried eggs with fried rice and informed the server to just serve the eggs on the fried rice. But no, the eggs were served separately on two plates.

I was curious about the Fried Kangkung which is battered and deep fried till crispy.

Unfortunately, the deep fried kangkung was not adequately drained so the ones at the bottom were soggy and oily.

The dipping sauce tasted like thick creamy tom yam, which was nice but I prefer to dip the kangkung in chili sauce.

We also ordered the Thai Special Platter, something which I have been wanting to try.

It was quite a nice variety as it had some sort of satay with dipping sauce....

.... and Kai Ping (Thai Honey Chicken). It was very tasty but I found it too sweet.

This platter also comes with a serving of Mango Salad and some Spring Rolls and crackers. We did not care much for the spring rolls and crackers which were just ordinary.

Oh, another dish we ordered was the Thai BBQ Lamb which I found to be tender and very flavorful. The dipping sauce was also very nice.

I do wish that Mr Tuk Tuk would accept credit card payments but I still support this restaurant because the food is good and the prices reasonable. At least the policy is cash only unlike some that accept cards and yet impose a minimum charge.

  2. I like Thai food, their style of cooking makes me drool... The Khun Thai in Penang also serves fried kangkung but not strips like this... at first glance, I thought they were little fish. :)

  6. This post is really making me drool and salivate. I miss Thai food for sometime now as I actually try to avoid eating them too often as memories of my mum and grandparents would come flooding back when i made every bite of the dishes. So emo la! LOLOL Bwahahaha
I am like your brother who loves spicy fried rice and fried eggs with plenty of sambal belacan too. We would always order their Thai Platter plate dishes which I noticed would change a bit from time to time. Your plate has something missing and something new. I couldn't figure the difference as my brain juice is dry.

I had never tried this fried kangkung that looks like a Thai Tempura all my life. The Thais normally fried brinjals, okra and others in dipped rice flour with eggs. They would also eat fresh blooming flowers too with sambal belacan and I used to laugh them silly when I was a toddler for eating real flowers and very geli insects too! Yeeerrr!!

    1. Yeah, I know. Food from childhood days will remind us of our loved ones. I did not know that the Thais have something similar to Tempura. It would have been nice if the kangkung was crispy and well drained.

  7. Deep fried kangkong. I agreed that they must drain the oiliness from the fried vegetables otherwise it would turn soggy and not nice to be eaten.

Look like this is one of your favourite outlets. Hope to give it a try if I ever drop by KL.
