Grandma's Mee Goreng

I still remember during one family gathering, my brother told me "Yang ni boleh jual" (this one can sell) as he ate this mee goreng (fried noodles).

This brother, the older of my two younger brothers, is a very good cook. Not only that, he is very frank and honest. If he says something is good, it's good.

This mee goreng, I am proud to say, tastes exactly like my grandma's.  It's a simple recipe and yet so effective in the taste department.

Chilies, shallots and garlic. Just pound these up to a paste and saute in hot oil till fragrant. Throw in marinated chicken, once cooked, throw in vegetables and noodles. Season with kayciap or kicap manis (sweet soya sauce) and you are done.

Gara-gara blender rosak, terpaksa mengadap benda ni.

I make it sound so simple, right? Of course it's simple but it takes some effort especially when you don't have a blender at your disposal. Bah!

But ultimately, worth every thonk, thonk, thonk when I enjoyed my very delicious mee goreng. Masuk bakul angkat sendiri (blowing my own trumpet). Well, there's no praise like self praise. Hah!

Grandma's Mee Goreng
Recipe source : Phong Hong

Ingredients :
- 250 grams yellow noodles
- Chicken meat from 1/2 chicken breast, cut into cubes
- 2 cloves garlic, minced (to season chicken)
- 1 tablespoon light soya sauce (to season chicken)
- mustard greens (chye sim/sawi)
- 3 tablespoons kayciap (or sweet soya sauce)
- 1 tablespoon dark soya sauce

Pounded/Blended ingredients :
- 5 red chillies
- 8 shallot
- 3 cloves of garlic

Method :
1. Season chicken meat with soya sauce and minced garlic. Set aside for 15 minutes.
2. Blend chillies, onion and garlic.
3. Heat oil in wok and saute the blended ingredients until fragrant.
4. Add chicken and stir fry until cooked. You can add some water and cover the wok to cook the chicken.
5. Add kayciap/sweet soya sauce and dark soya sauce. Stir to mix.
6. Add mustard greens and fry till wilted.
7. Add noodles and stir until well mixed with sauces.
8. Fry until noodles are fairly dry.

  5. I love mamak mee goreng...and yours look like really good (let me help you blow your own trumpet!) :D Didn't know it's such an easy recipe....hmmm, I must try to make this. Only thing is...will it stick to the wok or can I use non-stick? By the way, is there a difference between dark and sweet soya sauce or the two can be used interchangeably?

    1. hee..hee... but this one is not like the mamak's. I fried it in a wok and it will stick a little bit when it gets dry. You can also use non-stick, no problem. Now, dark soya sauce is salty while sweet soya sauce is salty and sweet. It's up to you which you prefer. In Terengganu, we like our food to have a bit of sweetish taste.

  9. Hi Phong Hong, nothing can beat home recipes from our Nenek Moyang. Basically, it is a matter of familiarity of the flavours and tastes that makes them good.

  11. Hi Phong Hong,
Surely yummy. Homecook can control the amount of oil in cooking as most mee goreng from stalls are very oily. Made me hungry now...

    1. Hah! Next time Hainom ke Aeon, ambik mee kuning. Mee kuning usually boleh simpan kat fridge. Senang senang boleh buat mee goreng. Grandma's recipe is the best lah, kan? Kita punya, boleh tahan lah hah..hah..

  15. My superheroes suka mi goreng tapi kena togel ajelah, PH. Kalau mereka nampak sayuran hijau atau lain-lain objek asing selain ayam, memang naya I kena makan sorang-sorang mi goreng tu nanti.

Simple macam nilah sedap. Lesung batu tu banyaknya you ada. You pengumpul lesung batu ke? Hahaha!

    1. MD, PH pernah tengok bebudak yang kutip satu persatu sayur dalam mee atau nasi goreng sebelum dia makan. Hah..kes naya tu. Bila dah bersih from all the sayur, baru lah dia makan.

Lesung batu is from my mum because she needs only one. Harta pusaka tu...
