Lazy Week

This happened when I lost my mood to meal prep. So I decided to go with the flow and give myself a break.

There is a new chap fan joint. It occupies the space where Caring pharmacy used to be. Poor Caring pharmacy. Locating itself right beside Guardian wasn't such a good idea after all.

It's the one with red signboard in between Guardian and Country Farm Organics.

Anway. I noted that this shop provides paper boxes. Wonderful. What's inside?

No rice. Loh Hon Chai, brinjals and marmite chicken (RM6.00). Not bad. The cooking style differs somewhat from the other chap fan stalls.

The next day I went to Tar Chong and was pleasantly surprised that they have ditched styrofoam boxes for these.

They are still plastic and it is best to bring our own containers but Madam was in her lazy mood.

My favorite lemon chicken, kai lan and long beans (RM8.00). Very good.

The following day I went to the one at the coffee shop near Standard Chartered Bank. Again I was pleasantly surprised that they too have ditched styrofoam boxes.

Brinjals, spinach and marmite chicken (RM7.00). Those red cili padi are killers. I think they purposely used this variety so that customers won't take too much chili.

The next day it was back to the one beside Guardian.

Sambal ladies fingers, sweet and sour oink oink and sambal winged beans (RM7.00).

Then on Friday, I repeated one of the above. So no pictures.

I'm back to prepping my own food and let's see how long I can keep up :)

  1. Oh so for one whole week you ate chapfan. The chapfan dishes look good - lots of vege no rice. Price is ok too. I don't know about the plastic containers. I have seen them being used in coffee shops in my area too. Are they better than Styrofoam containers?

  2. A lot of chap fan places have started using these new plastic containers since they have to ditch styrofoam boxes come a certain date anyway. It's still plastic but at least better than styrofoam coz they're supposed to be the disposable type...best is still paper boxes. Even the chicken rice and roasted meat stalls have started using them in my neighbourhood (while some have resorted to using those brown paper). I hate these new plastic boxes...they're so flimsy coz they can't take the weight of your chap fan and if the rice is hot, you can't hold on to the boxes for long (some were kind enough to give me a plate underneath...to withstand the heat and weight)! >:( You're lucky coz you don't take any rice. And I don't know whose bright idea it was to design it with ridges inside...it makes it more difficult to scoop the rice! >_<

Hmmm, on the contrary, the Caring in my neighbourhood is bigger and doing better than Guardian a few shops away ;)

    1. That's what I noticed. And these plastic containers are too small for me, can't take as much as I would like to but good for portion control.

  3. You bring your own container, Phong Hong. Good for you. It's better than any plastic container or even paper boxes.

All the mixed rice looks good but no carbo. As long as it works for you and you are contented.

  4. I have not tried buying without rice just like what you did, dunno if they sell it this way like what you did... As i ever buy just the ingredients, there's a minimum $ to buy...

    1. Should be no problem if you don't want to buy the rice. I see many people doing that here.

  5. Those paper container is supposed to be environmental-friendly. But a bit soft and cannot hold well than those styrofoam.

I love chap fan. Sometimes I do buy dishes especially meats for dinner when I dont know what to cook. Hehe.

    1. Yes, the paper boxes are quiet flimsy. Chap fan can be a life saver for those days when you don't want to cook or sick of own cooking hee..hee..

  6. Hi Phong Hong, it's okay to take a break occasionally. I believe when I'm not in the mood, the food that I cooked which is 'ho liao' becomes 'boh ho liao'. So don't pressure ourselves, hehehe! Past few days, I had vegetarian breakfast at the temple nearby, so relaxing time....with a group of friends.

  7. The cardboard boxes are very flimsy, will so limp and spoil easily even from the steam of something hot inside, what more to say food with sauces. They say the plastic is recyclable but anyway, it can be used again and again - I always wash them clean and keep them for later use.

    1. Yes, I noticed that. The plastic ones are better but a bit small.

  8. OK, next time I also must bring my own container when buying chap farn, I think it is more appetizing than putting in the transparent plastic boxes... those plastic ones remind me of "kueh" only... hahahaa...

  10. I like what you have chosen for your meal without rice. They look delicious and I love the greens. I too prefer to bring my own container. If they use paper boxes, the gravy will seep through, won't they?

    1. The paper box has a thin plastic lining, so the gravy won't seep unless if there is a lot of gravy.

  12. You think they ditch the Styrofoam boxes because of environmental friendly? Nah... Is because these plastic ones cheaper...

Also, I don't recall marmite chicken being so commonly found in KL chap fan stalls. Thought that's a Penang thing... hmm...
