Daddy's Favorite Girl

Belle Belle completed her final dose of antibiotics on Friday and the following day, I let her have her freedom outside the house.

She had been cooped up again inside her cage after the latest visit to the vet. He administered two injections - an antibiotic  shot for the infection and an anti-parasite shot to take care of the ear mite issue.

Belle Belle was also prescribed with anti-histamines (anti-itch to prevent her from scratching her ear while she is recovering) and antibiotics. To feed her the tablets, I had to do it the sneaky way - by placing the (small) pills in her food.

There is no way I could put the pills down her throat the way the vet does, in fact even he has trouble because the feisty Belle Belle spit out her tablet (during an earlier visit) three times before it successfully made it down her throat.

Through trial and error, I got the hang of getting Belle Belle to take her tablets. What I do is divide her wet food into two portions.

The antibiotic which I feel is more critical than the anti-histamine goes first. I place the antibiotic on top of the food and cover it with some small bits of food. That way, when Belle Belle wolfs down her food (that's how she eats hah..hah...) the first mouthful (including the antibiotic) gets swallowed.

When she is done with the first portion (which acts like an appetizer) she is in a frenzy for more food. That is when I give her the second serving. Same method - anti-histamine right on top and covered with some food. Again, it gets wolfed down and swallowed without her tasting and detecting the medicine.

This method worked like a charm. In the past, the inexperienced me simply buried the pill inside the food. In the process of eating, she would discover the tablet and spit or avoid it.

And then I even ground the pill and mixed it into the food, rendering the food unpalatable. She refused to feed. Haiz...

Just finished pang sai.

Belle Belle is all good now, her ear is clean and no longer wet and weepy. No more stinky smell and I could even give her a kiss and take a sniff of the top of her head. Belle Belle you smell so nice now!

She is quite obedient, doesn't make too much noise unless if she is hungry and does not need much encouragement to go into her cage.

My partner keeps telling me that Belle Belle is such a good girl and she seems to be his favorite.

Her fur is very nice and fluffy now and no longer has wet spots. I see her grooming herself very frequently.

While in quarantine (hah..hah...) I allowed her time outside her cage so that she can move around freely and also for her to use the litter box.

Can you see somebody trying to be kepoh-kepoh?

Belle Belle took to the tofu litter very quickly, maybe because she didn't have a choice.

I had to remove the rim of the litterbox because Belle Belle is quite clumsy and in the past she has done her business on the rim rather than inside the box.

She is quite attached to her cage. Often I find her sitting right outside the cage and as soon as I open the door, she enters and settles right in.

I hope that Belle Belle's ears stay mite-free and I will be constantly monitoring her and Girl too.

Now where is Girl?

Ish! Sleeping until terkangkang like that.

She is very alert as all cats are and woke up immediately while I was sneaking up on her. Go back to sleep Girl!

Belle Belle generally knocks off once she has had dinner.

I hope all will be well from now on.

  5. Both cats to keep you busy at home, PH! Really need patience when it comes to pets. Normally cats don't like to be caged up but Belle seems so comfortable in her nice home.

    1. Yah a lot of patience needed especially when trying to clean Belle's ear. She is quite rebellious. She loves her cage, it's like her safe haven.

  6. It is sure hard work to feed medicine to pets. I know as my mum has dogs and if one fall suck, the hassle of going to vet or have vet visiting to the house, feeding medicine. I am not into that. Lol. Hope Belle gets well soon.

  7. As I've always mentioned, it's only a matter of time before Belle Belle gets used to the cage. The fact that she hangs around the cage and goes in willingly is a sign that she views the cage as something familiar and comforting to her. Glad to see her grooming herself (a cat that doesn't groom is a cat that's unwell). Wouldn't removing the cover scatter the litter outside? Accidents on the cover could mean the litter box isn't big enough for her size. Cookie would not fall for the trap of meds in his food as he always smells his food first before eating...lol! :D P/S: I see that you've gotten Belle a water container for her cage. I think it'll end up as a 'white elephant' coz from what I know cats don't drink like that (unlike dogs).

    1. You are right, Belle sees her cage as a safe place and if I just leave the cage door open, she will make her way inside and settle down. Due to the low tracking of tofu litter, vert little scatter outside the box even with the lid removed.

Girl is just like your Cookie. She approaches her food cautiously first before sniffing and eating. Belle just dives right in. I hope I need not feed Girl any meds as it would be very difficult!
