Chicken Rice Blues

A new chicken rice shop opened in Damansara Uptown. Yay! So what did I do?

Yup, I dragged my partner there. I have been longing for chicken rice but it is not so convenient to go to the one that I love at Jalan Gasing

We got ourselves a barley lime to share. Very jimat heh..heh...

For a change, I decided to have the roasted chicken.

Then I couldn't resist an order of siew yoke.

And what's chicken rice without the rice?

Sigh....The rice fell short in terms of taste and fragrance. It was almost like ordinary rice.

The soup that came with it was very bland and diluted. This is not going well.

The siew yoke was very lean and very dry and did not taste like siew yoke

As for the chicken, it was just ok.

The beansprouts? Also just ok...

I kind of felt bad bringing my partner here. But this is the only way to find out if it was any good. Since I did not have anything nice to say, I shall not mention the name of this place.

  1. At least you gave it a try and can decide you like it or not.

  2. lean siew yoke is for me. when i eat chicken rice i will order plain white rice or brown rice if they have it and not chicken rice. lol! i guess no point asking you the price since you will never be going back there. what did your partner say?

    1. My partner agreed that it wasn't good. If I remember correctly the dinner cost us RM53.

  3. Aha! I suspect that shop is Sing Kee Restaurant which is a branch from Taman Desa. Correct boh? I lived in Taman Desa for 10 years and saw this outlet enjoying packed full house at lunch hours. To me, I loved their Chai Boey and crispy Wukok.

    1. That's the one and unfortunately this branch did not live up to the reputation of the original one (which I have not tried). Too bad :(

  6. Yes, they don't look very appetizing, there was once I went to chicken rice at a restaurant, the rice was just plain white rice and not the authentic chicken rice, disappointed

  8. I've been trying out a lot of this around here, taking a break from The Malay nasi campur for a while. Been blogging a lot about those. Had a post Monday, one more coming up real soon.

  9. Ooo, for me, the oiliness and aroma are the reasons I eat chicken rice ... ya, I do feel that many restaurants lack that ... I used to take it for granted cos my grandmother would cook really fragrant and flavorful chicken rice at home, and it always seemed easy to her :)

    1. You got that right - the flavor is in the fat! My mum does a really good chicken rice too but she cooked it only once or twice (as far as I remember) because she did not want us to eat too much oily food.

  10. Oh dear, too bad it didn't turn out good for you. You don't have to feel bad for dragging your partner here, I drag my spouse to many curry laksa places too but none has bettered his favourite stall so far but we won't know unless we try, right? ;)

  16. I don't know if it is just me or what, but this recent 2 years, I feel that the chicken rice quality in KL as a whole... are not what it used to be. The few that I thought were decent, were not anymore... Bland and tough meats these days...

    1. You may be right. Only one or two places do more than decent chicken rice. That's quite sad.
