Bye Bye Tesco

My partner and I used to do our Friday evening grocery run at Tesco. That's because I need vegetables and other foodstuff to cook on Saturday.

But it was quite frustrating because perishables like fruits and vegetables were not at their best by the time we got there.

Now that Jaya Grocer is at The Starling, I can easily nip over to pick up whatever I wanted. What I like is, besides fresh produce, there are so many products available.

One of my favorites at the moment is beef. Quality beef.

Oh yeah, you can't get this stuff at Tesco or even Aeon.

Vacuum sealed for freshness. I have cooked and eaten the beef twice already. I have 3 more packets in the freezer.

Ah! Now I can get oxtail to make my Sup Buntut.

Oh wait. What do we have here?

Hee..hee..hee... baking stuff! Yay!

Baking pans. I have too many already. Most are gathering dust.

Pretty cupcake liners. I cannot resist.

Yum! Rows and rows of chocolates.

Even the naughty boozy ones.

Errr...Oats? Let's skip this. Next!

Imported biscuits. Now I can get Golden Oreos. Haven't bought any yet.

And there's a deli where you can get nice food.

I haven't tried it yet.

All I ever do is pass by and oogle at the salads.

And the pies.

I wonder who buys these expensive butter? Not me that's for sure.

Lovely imported yogurt but I cannot afford these.

And I found some exotic fruits. Stingy as I am, I finally caved in and bought a box of Physalis. I loved it. Sourish and sweetish. But I won't buy these too often because I have to conserve for my steaks. Hah!

  1. I guess Jaya is just as good? Tesco is British but in Plymouth, we would prefer Asda.

    1. You mean Cold Storage? Yes, it is just as good. Really depends on how it is managed. I have seen rotting vegetables/fruits still sitting on the shelves in other supermarkets >.<

  5. i'm eyeing the beef too! with steak prices constantly shooting up at restaurants, this would certainly be an economical way to keep on enjoying our rib-eyes :D

  6. You're comparing Tesco and AEON to this orang atas, expat level supermarket. Unfair comparison leh... hahahaha!!

But then when it comes to fresh produce, I think the price is not that much different. Over CNY, I brought my mom to AEON to buy veggies, and she was shocked that some of the stuff there were cheaper than the pasar >.<

    1. Perhaps I am being unfair hah..hah.. But one thing for sure is that, any supermarket atas or not, should not be displaying half dead vegetables/fruits on the shelves and the meat/fish section should not stink >.<

  8. I love Jaya Grocer too! More imported stuff and the prices are quite reasonable for some. My friend told me that the chicken sold there are anti something, that means no injection or something like that... I have yet to check it out though...

    1. I noted that the perishables there are fresh not like other places where some vegetables/fruits past due date still sits on the shelves.

  9. I have been to Jaya Grocer a few times and the food is fresh. But its not so convenient for me so my next option is Aeon Big where parking is not a problem.

Unfortunately, mine isn't as close to me like yours is. For me, it's still in the city centre just like having to go to Pavilion or KLCC. Their selection of beef, fish and prawns are really good quality and fresh!

  16. I also love to shop at that Jaya Grocer as their tall shelves are very American styled and the air con is cold like Sapporo Winter. See you there!

  17. Hi Phong Hong, I'm surprised you got to snap all these photos. I always thought that taking photos at the stores aren't allowed as I have seen people been stopped when they do so.

    1. Hi Kimmy! They are still new, so perhaps more relaxed on their rules. Nobody stopped me even though their staff saw me hee..hee.. But I am giving them good review, so should be ok lah.
