Milo Ice Cream

A few weeks ago, I was ambushed outside UOB Bank. "SURPRISE!!!!!!", cried a group of perky young people as they rushed towards me. What the fing-fing (this is my polite F word) is going on? It was not my birthday, that's for sure.

They had party hats and favors on them and I thought they were going to usher me into a happening pahtay. But no. One of them, the most aggressive of the lot, presented me with this big blue tumbler.

And then she told me to follow her into the bank for a short 5 minutes presentation. Ah...sales talk. I don't normally respond to this but I wanted the tumbler, which was crammed full of goodies heh..heh..heh... All I needed to do was to lend her my ears. Apparently the bank was promoting some medical insurance plan.

After listening for a bit, during which time, I was pretty much thinking of what dishes to pick from the chap fan stall (hmmm......marmite chicken or sweet and sour pork...hmmmm...), it was over. She took down my contact details and gave me her card. And that was it. She never heard from me again.

Now let's take a look at the loot. Oh, there is something missing. There were a few small boxes of raisins which I took out and gave to my partner. He loves raisins.

See that sachet of Milo 3-in-1? That proved to be very handy because this month's theme on Little Thumbs Up is Milo! I still remember the Milo jingle from my childhood "Minum Milo anda jadi sihat dan kuat!".

Then there was the Milo van that would make a trip to my school every now and then to delight us with a cup if ice cold Milo. It was something to look forward to not just for the drink but for the opportunity to get out of the classroom.

And whenever any of us was sick, my mum would put us to bed with strict instructions not to read or watch TV (because it would aggravate our headache) and she will come into our room with a glass of ice cold Milo. Ah...that was something that more than made up for the lack of TV or reading. Yes, my mum gives us cold drinks when we are sick. Our family does not observe any pantang but we grew up alright.

To be honest, it has been a long, long time since I drank Milo. And since this is the Milo month, I went on Milo overload and bought Milo Nuggets (in addition to a packet of Milo powder) and pinched 2 sachets of Milo 3-in-1 from the office.

Now that I know how to make ice cream, naturally my mission is to make Milo Ice Cream. Yeah! But...but...before that I baked cookies with Milo but I'll post that a bit later, OK? We do need cookies to support the ice cream.

The whole night before I made the ice cream, I was contemplating not adding eggs into the ice cream. Eggs...no eggs... eggs...no eggs...eggs...no eggs... Why? Because (1) it is troublesome (2) I will be left with eggs whites. In the end, after giving myself a sleepless night (I know. I am extreme), I decided to use eggs after all. I torture myself like this all the time.

I also added crushed Milo Nuggets into the ice cream and I tell you, this Milo ice cream is AWESOME!! It had the full malty chocolaty flavors of Milo and it was very creamy. I was a little bit impatient and couldn't wait for the ice cream to set properly before tucking in, hence you can see that my ice cream is melting all over the place.

I did not add any sugar to the ice cream mixture because Milo 3-in-1 and Milo powder is already sweet enough for me. I also took into account the sweetness that would be contributed by the Milo Nuggets. The ice cream itself is mildly sweet, the way that I like it. With the addition of the crushed Milo Nuggets, the sweetness was amped up a bit and was fine by me.

If you love Milo, you will love this Milo ice cream. I thoroughly enjoyed this ice cream, sprinkled with crushed Milo Nuggets and Chocolate Chip Cookies and served atop a giant cookie!

Milo Ice Cream
Recipe source : Adapted from Honest Cooking

Ingredients :
- 1 cup full cream milk
- 2 cups cream
- 2 sachets of Milo 3-in-1 and Milo powder , all together makes one cup
- 5 eggs yolks
- 1 packet Milo Nuggets, crushed (optional)

Note : If you like your ice cream to be sweeter, please add 1/2 cup sugar.

Method :
1. Sift Milo 3-in-1 and Milo powder together. Any rough residue left on your sieve, just add it into the sifted ingredients. Set aside.
2. Whisk the egg yolk in a mixing bowl and set aside.
3. In a saucepan, heat milk and cream on low heat. Add the sifted Milo powder and stir until it dissolves.
4. When the mixture is hot enough or when you see tiny bubbles forming at the side of the pan, slowly pour the hot liquid into the egg yolks while whisking the egg yolks.
5. Then pour the mixture back into the saucepan and continue to stir on low heat until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of the spoon.
6. Take the mixture off the heat and sieve into a container.
7. Cover the mixture with cling wrap, making sure the cling wrap is in contact with the surface of the mixture to prevent formation of a skin.
8. Once cool, place in the fridge to chill before churning with an ice cream machine for 40 minutes (please follow manufacturer's instructions).
9. During the last 5 minutes of churning, add the crushed Milo Nuggets (if using).
10. Transfer ice cream into an air tight container and freeze.

Not bad you know, inside there also got 1 packet of Sunsweet Prunes. I think I untung because I got the goodies and the bank did not get any sales from me.

  15. Ahhh, after the coconut ice cream, comes Milo ice cream, sedap-nyer !! Very creative of you to put the ice cream on top of a cookie, looks so pretty.. Ahhh, same here, I also want the tumbler and goodies inside, but I don't feel good following somebody to some place to listen to something.. But since it's a female, and the place is inside a bank, then I think ok, safe, haha.. I went to Berjaya Times Square many years ago, and somebody showed me a mug, and asked me to go somewhere to talk about something, nope, not a bank, it's a Telco or something, and I really followed him, phew, lucky nothing happened to me, haha..

  16. This one looks like something I ate at Eat Me, Bangsar....ice cream on a cookie! I see a chocolate chip cookie underneath ;) This Milo ice cream tastes like chocolate ice cream? Actually, this one no need to think so hard lar...can use eggs since the colour will blend into the Milo (unlike the white coconut ice cream).

The blue tumbler you got, is it Tupperware brand? If it is, untung lar you! I wouldn't mind being given a tumbler also, but my contact info is more precious to me coz I don't want to layan people calling me after that and try to sell me something I don't want. In fact, I get very annoyed when banks call me (they get this info from your credit card or HP liaison with them).

    1. Yup, got that idea from reading your post and also from the ice cream at Every Sundae! Yes, this Milo ice cream taste like chocolate ice cream with the added malty taste. And I am glad I added the eggs.

Gee, I didn't check what brand. I'll do that when I get home :) I too get super annoyed with unsolicited phone calls offering loans and whatnots from the bank.

  17. What the fing-fing! Another ice cream post! Arghhhhh!!!

I admire your courage, if me, I would glare at those fellas and leave as fast as possible. Risky leh, they might look like bank people, but they might be con artists who kidnap people too!

    1. hah..hah... what courage? You mean greed? :D It was right in front of the bank and the sales person ushered me into the bank to chat, so it was safe lah.
