Every festive season, Halla Holla curates a bake (or two) that complements the spirit of that particular celebration.
And every time I am curious and I must have a taste hah..hah...
This year's creation for Ramadan/Hari Raya is the Sourdough Apam Balik. Well, not an actual apam balik but a bun with apam balik filling.
The bun was served nice and warm with my iced black coffee. But I waited.
After my dietary reset in January 2026, I am not as restrictive as I used to be. BUT. I am careful not to overdo my carb intake.
Because if I eat too many carbs too often, it affects my brain. The anxiety, depression and mental fog comes back.
So.
When I want to enjoy a carb, I make sure to eat protein first (to blunt the insulin spike) then I eat the carb. And after that, I go for a walk. So my carb intake is planned ie I make sure to time it in such a way that there will be a walk at the end of the meal.
The bun is crusty and studded with pieces of peanuts. I love the crust, thin with a nice crunch. Nice!
It is sweet of course and (as usual) too sweet for me. But overall I think most people would find this level of sweet OK.
If you want to know what this tastes like, imagine the Roti Boy bun but instead of coffee, replace that with apam balik filling.
Had I eaten this bun while it was still warm, I would have enjoyed it even more.
My heart broke seeing it eating from this plastic bag. My heart breaks for all stray cats that I meet. Haiz.
Then this one strutted confidently like a tiger but it turned away when I pointed my phone at it. After buying mum's lunch, I walked back to DJ again to run off my glucose hah..hah...

Oh, I absolutely love eating (a traditional) apam balik....but has to refrain coz the filling of peanuts and corn has lots of white sugar tabur over it (it's frightening when you see them make it). It will be a really cheat day when I do indulge in one! ;)
ReplyDeleteDear friend, those eggs look delicious. 😋 The cats are beautiful. Love ❤️ the quote and illustration as well.
