Stinky Tofu

Is stinky tofu really stinky? Of course lah, if not why would they call it stinky tofu? How stinky is it? Let me count the ways...

Well, it is Friday. Time to wash my living room curtains which have not been washed for two years. Or was it three? Am I terrible?

I had to wash the curtains in three batches because obviously my washing machine is not big enough to wash all in one go.

I hate washing curtains. You gotta remove the curtains, then remove the curtain hooks and once washed, you have to put back the hooks and hook the curtains back on the rail. That is a lot of work but it had to be done.

Because of that, I had no time to cook. There was one portion of soup in the fridge but I wanted to keep that for dinner. So I thought I might fast till dinner time but alas, my stomach had other ideas. So Grabfood lah.

Can you guess where this is from? They have stinky tofu on the menu, which I (although curious) dare not order at the restaurant lest I faint from the pong or gag at the table.

Normal food first, the Pork Braised Rice and Salt & Pepper Pork Chop.

The pork chop was packed separately.

And now for the smelly stuff.

It looked benign, just like any ordinary deep fried tofu. But... it was so smelly. I don't know how to describe it. It was a very sharp smell. It came with some pickled cabbage and two small tubs of sweet sauce.

I gingerly tried a piece without the sauce. Oh dear. The smell is worse than the taste but still ......

Then I dipped it in the sauce and it tasted somewhat better but still ....

Stinky tofu is not described as the blue cheese of tofu for nothing. Let me try to describe. It's a very gross description, so brace yourselves. You know when you have food stuck between your teeth (especially between your molars) and the some hours later you remove it with your tongue? It smells bad right? That's how stinky tofu is for me.

I paid RM9.90 to eat something smelly. Never again.

  1. stinky tofu smells like 'days of unwashed socks that are full of sweat'. Every time i passed by the stinky tofu truck in pasar malam i would close my nose and run pass it. 3 years ago, me & annoying sis went to buy stinky tofu in HK, it wasn't that sharp stinky (though i did not eat). I guess the stinkiness varies depends on the maker.

  2. Hahahaha, was the tofu still very crispy? U scared scared eat, of course cannot la. Must put the very crispy tofu info your mouth together with the sour cabbage lots and chew well. Very nice once u acquired the taste. But must be crispy. Was the tofu still crispy. If u r scared of this crispy tofu then no need to try the wet version. I love the wet version in Taiwan. Yums! This from Mr. Wu? So what happened? Did u slow slow eat all or u let the bins tong sampah eat the tofu? Lolx! 😂But good la u dare to try. 10 ringgit only, ok la. Did u let Ah Girl smell to see she wants to eat it or not? 😂

    1. The tofu was still hot and crispy (from Mr Wu) and I memang takut2 try and eat. Really torture hah..hah... After eating it neat, I ate with sauce and the cabbage but still do not like it. I ate all in spite of not liking it and no regrets trying. At least now I know not to order it. LOL!

    2. Because the cabbage is sweet. Would taste better if the cabbage is sourish with fresh cut red chili. If u ever visit Taiwan, u must eat their famous Fried chou tofu to compare and maybe also the wet ones because I suspect you may like the wet ones because they are very flavourful and spicy.

    1. It's a novelty I guess and there are people who genuinely like it, just like how some people enjoy stinky cheese.

  4. I didnt get chance to try stinky tofu in China in 2019. A friend did bought and tried. She commented it was nice and not stinky at all. Oh well, guess I must give it a try, at least once. I dont see people selling it here.not an in-thing unlike in China.

  5. To me, the stinky tofu sold in pasar malam really stinks like the smell from the garbage truck. I used to go all out to avoid passing the stall when I visited the pasar malam. Surprisingly, I did tried the fried stinky tofu in Hong Kong when I was there and I didn't have problem with the smell and in fact, I quite enjoyed it. That was the one and only time I tasted stinky tofu.

    1. hah..hah... I heard from my aunt that they are sold at pasar malam in SS2. She also described the smell like garbage that has been around for days. I was quite fascinated back then what it was like and how is it that people can appreciate something so smelly. Now I know and I am definitely not a fan. LOL!

  6. Today I bought the tofu and dumplings. Tofu takeaway no longer crispy so of course cannot compare to those in Taiwan eaten at the shops, super crispy with sour cabbage. This cabbage is sweet so is not the same. Dumplings skin not thick, normal only but dry and a bit hard so of course not likable la. Fillings also normal only, on the salty side. Braised pork rice is nice cos the minced meat are lean meat so I like. Thanks for highlighting this shop.

  7. Why on earth would you order something that stinks to the high heavens? I've hated the smell since someone decided to sell it at my pasar malam. At times I could even smell it from my house if the wind blows the right way even when I stayed away from the pasar malam. Luckily, the stall didn't survive very long...for obvious reasons! Someone once told me that it only smells stinky but not so when you eat it. Well, I don't believe them but I believe in eating with my eyes and nose first, so I'm not going to put something in my mouth that's foul smelling...and now you've proven what I've thought all along! >_< P/S: I pity the delivery guy who had to deliver your stinky tofu...lol.

    1. The delivery guy won't be able to smell it. I picked up it yesterday. The smell wasn't that strong like durian, cannot smell it until it is out of the bad. It really does smell worse than it tastes. At least PH tried it though it is best eaten crispy. Not crispy not so nice la.

    2. Kris : Just like a cat, I had to satisfy my curiosity and luckily didn't get killed! LOL! I heard about this stinky tofu being sold at pasar malam and my aunt described it as smelling like garbage that has been left to stand for days. Well, it is smelly but I am glad I tried it. At least if someone tells me to give it a go, I can say, no thank you! Been there, done that! LOL!

    3. The smell of stinky garbage I can still tolerate. This stinky tofu smells like I'm passing by an animal farm as it smells like cow manure..or some kind of animal shit (in vast quantities)...lol! :D

  9. From my previous experiences of eating stinky tofu (I tried both M'sia & Taiwan version but I'm not a fan actually), they didn't taste as stinky as they smell, it tasted just like normal fried tofu.
