My Dad's Garden #1 : Fruits

Believe it or not I have no more food or cakes to show you. So now I go to my back-up posts and show you my dad's garden instead hah..hah... OK, mou?

My dad is a retired electrical engineer who loves gardening. He loves to potter around the garden and our family house is surrounded by lots of plants. This is a continuation of my Kuala Terengganu post hah..hah..yes, still got stories to tell.

One morning, I heard some scary sounds coming from the garden. It sounded like Planet of the Apes was happening right outside the kitchen. Alarmed, I asked my mum "Mummy, what is that sound?".

My mum was calmly going about her chores and she nonchalantly replied "That's your Pa chasing monkeys." What? I quickly rushed outside, prepared to protect my father from the monkeys. I gingerly approached and I saw my dad carrying a long pole and making guttural noises at the monkeys. They whopped back from among the trees. I could see them swinging on the trees a distance away.

Monkeys like to come by the garden due to the fruit trees. They eat the mangoes and whatever fruits that they can find and make a nuisance of themselves. I tried to take photos of them but they were too far away.

Let's a take a preliminary tour of the garden.

Chillies. I wish my chilli plants at home would do as well as my dad's.

There's Hibiscus too and some other vegetation.
Pomegranate. I spotted this beauty one morning.

My dad told me that the monkeys usually get to the
pomegranate before he had a chance to harvest.

Lots of mangoes. The monkeys love these.

Lime. My dad finally disclosed the location of his lime plant.
Even then it took me awhile to find it.

I have 2 lime plants at home and they have never produced any fruits.

Some wild fruits. I don't know what they are.

My dad also does not know what these are.

These are the berries of the Japanese bamboo. Look like earrings to me.

Jackfruit. Dad said they are not ripe yet. I did not have a chance to eat these.
Besides fruits, my dad also has a collection of flowers and vegetables which I will show you next. But that will happen when I run out of cakes and food, OK?

  6. Waiyor!!!!! So nice. No need to buy from the market now, can even take to sell...especially the mangoes.

I used to have two huge quinee trees that came with the house when I bought it - I would give to friends and family two rounds at least and sell the rest - each time, can make some 200-300 ringgit!!! Too bad, so many bees at one time...so I got people to come to get rid of both of them. No more. :(

    1. Whoa! Can make so much money just selling quinee from 2 trees! Too bad you had to cut them down :(

  7. huh?? i am surprised and my jaw dropped onto the floor to read that you have no cooking or baking post left to publish, hahaha.. errr, good also you still have some backups.. i guess that's what we do, keep some photos in our PC and when we run out of ideas, that folder will be a good place to korek for ideas~~ :p

wah, this Auntie slept till so late in the morning until the noise from the Plant of The Apes could wake her up.. her dad was already fighting the monkeys while her mom was already preparing lunch for her in the kitchen, hahaha!! but i like your spirit, as soon as you heard that your dad was fighting with the monkey, you immediately thought of protecting him!! you are a good filial daughter lah..

    1. Ya lor, no more cooking or baking posts. Not that I didn't cook but those were ordinary stuff.

Well, I was worried about my father. You would have done the same for your dad. I know SK is also a filial son!

  8. errr, i want to say, that is not just your dad's garden but it's an ORCHARD lah, hahaha.. look at all those things he has in there.. the mango looks so attractive, did you pluck some to make mango kerabu?? hanging them there on the tree just attracts all the fing-fing to come to steal them only..

ah, that's pomegranate!! i thought it looks like dragon fruit instead.. the fing-fing are so bad huh, they could smell the pomegranate and steal them before your dad could harvest them.. hmmm, maybe your dad should built fencing and roof to protect his orchard already..

i wonder if the fing-fing also likes to steal the chili?? hahaha, i guess not, i think they will just stay away from there huh?? and probably the limes also, since there two are hot and sour, only this Auntie PH will go and steal some back to KL and make her own tomyum at home, hehehe~~ :p

wild fruits?? looks like mini tomatoes to me, but are they edible?? and nangka, fuyoh, so many of them!! but too bad they are not ripen enough the time you were back in hometown, else we will have more posts to read.. haha :)

    1. hah..hah... Fing Fing! Yes, there were so many of them, all wanting to get their hands on the fruits! Too bad I was not in time to eat the nangka. The mangoes were not ripe yet and I also did not have a chance to eat.

I've heard before hor, monkeys kidnap babies! They are like humans, they are "smart", they think like humans.. A few times, MIL complained monkeys stole fruits from her kitchen, even car keys! OMG !

    1. Hi Louiz! I also like nangka and mangoes. These monkeys are a nuisance. But can;t blame them as their habitat is being disturbed due to development.

  10. Garden?? You meant farm issit? I think it is because KL is f**cked up and polluted so things doesn't grow as easily there...

I'm amazed those monkeys can be chased away. Unlike those in Batu Caves. You try chasing those away and see end up is who chase who away instead.. >.<

  16. Your father grows different types of mangoes? I see some are more rounded and some look like the elephant tusk mangoes. With such an abundance of mangoes and limes, your family can make lots of Thai mango salad or mango kerabu anytime....yum, yum! ;) And jackfruit, can make that Thai dessert ;D

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmmm...I must ask him next time. I think there are two types and strangely I have never eaten the mangoes! Oh yes, we should have ample material for Thai kerabu and desserts hee..hee...

  19. Hi Phong Hong,
Your dad has a fabulous garden! I am so envious! Each time when I do my gardening in my limited space, I always wish to have gardening grounds! I would love to grow fruit trees! When I was young and living in the kampung, we have mango, jambu air, guava, bananas, jackfruit etc... and I remember very well too how my sisters and I will grumble when we have to sweep all the fallen leaves! Haha! Your dad's mangoes and jackfruit are looking great!
