Kuala Terengganu Trip : Day 6

Since I have given you a Nutella Chocolate Cherry Cheesecake, may I continue with my KT stories?

We have come to day 6, my second last day in Kuala Terengganu. It looks like the heavy eating was not going to stop hah..hah..hah..

It was a Thursday and I thought that we were going back to Madam Bee's (by now you know I love this place) but mum had other ideas. The night before, she called this lady, Ah Looi who runs a chap fan place in town. Mum wanted to place orders for the Chim Koay (crabcakes).

Sadly, this item was not on Ah Looi's menu for Thursday but would be available on Saturday but brother and I would be leaving by then. So mum ordered the chicken kerabu, fried ikan bilis and 3 types of vegetables.

The next morning, brother and I dropped our parents off at our uncle's and we both went gallivanting at the Terengganu market. I'll show you what we saw there in another post. We only spent an hour plus before picking up our parents and heading to Kg Cina (Chinatown) to pick up our food.

My brother went to Madam Bee's to tapau Terengganu Laksa and Rojak Ceranang. My mum and I headed to a shop to buy Roti Paung.

Roti Paung. Not as good as the ones I had when I was a kid.
Then we saw some pickled mangoes and bought a few packets.

The pickled mangoes. Did not taste that good on the day we
bought but improved the day after.
We also saw some Rojak Betik and bought 4 packets. Oh, we also picked up a few packets of keropok hee..hee...

Rojak Betik. Noms! Had this for dinner.
Then we crossed the road and headed to Ah Looi's stall. I wanted to take pictures but my hands were full. Mum picked up the items she ordered and went to the shop next door to see what else she could pick up. She tapau a packet of stewed pork.

Then brother reminded mum that she had to buy eggs. So we crossed the road again to the provision shop to get some. My dad was still enjoying his drink at Madam Bee's. Once we were done, we walked back to the car and headed home.

So here is what we had. A lot of food again which is not unusual for us.

The chicken kerabu was very hot and spicy. Loads of raw vegetables here.

Wonderful eaten with crunchy keropok.

The ikan bilis was also very good.

This siew mai came from my uncle.

And remember we must have at least two vegetables? Well, there were 3 more types here, bittergourd, ladies fingers and a mixed vegetable with tanghoon. All RM12 of it.

Oh no! There's more vegetables in the form of rojak ceranang.

So this was our lunch spread.

So much vegetables that day. On the left you can see mum with dad's
Terengganu Laksa packed from Madam Bee's. Eh, where's the stewed pork?
Maybe it was still in the kitchen when I snapped this pic.
We were so stuffed after lunch, full of fiber hah..hah.. So we had a light dinner. Yup, we had the roti paung...

.... and pickled mangoes...

... and all that was left of the roti paung...

...was all gone. All two trays of it. I also had the rojak betik which we saved for dinner. And that concludes day 6. Buuurpp!!!

Keropok+kerabu+rojak ceranang = A happy lunch.

  1. Yeahh..that roti paung! suggested you to try out those from Durian Burung (before shell petrol pump). Smaller sizes but the taste, ohh la..la..and they do it with red bean, kaya and coconut fillings too. However, I prefer the original ones and i would say the bread is so soft, and fluffy in texture. This is my must buy item whenever i go back home.

  3. Now I am worried when I visit KT, I might turn fatty overnight. Sweats! So much yummy food to try and slurps! That Chicken Kerabu and ikan bilis cannot be missed!
I guess that most people in KT speak Hokkien!

I am looking forward to more KT posts.

    1. TM, no need to worry. Just go to KT and EAT! Yes, Hokkien is widely spoken in KT and our Hokkien is more similar to Penang though it has it's own unique characteristic. Some words that we use are peculiar to Terengganu and you might not understand it.

  4. The chicken kerabu looks like fried noodles.. When I see your first picture, I thought, yummzz, economy noodles for breakfast coz I thought I could see fried noodles, veggies and meat, haha.. Ohhh, the pickled mangoes look so nice, but I thought they are supposed to be bright yellow in colour, the ones I always have when I shop at Aeon, we pick and weigh, those jeruk mangga.. But if I'm desperate, I go grab a packet from 7-11.. That roti paung, you said not as nice as the ones you had as a kid, but still all habisssttt, must be still good lah, haha..

    1. Hi Louiz! Oh, looks like noodles hah..hah.. I've tried the pickled mangoes at Aeon but not so nice. That roti paung was warmed up in the oven, so it was very nice. That's why all habis.

  6. I think I'll like the chicken kerabu the most. Is it supposed to be swimming in so much sauce? I can see that it's another big feast....but no food is too much for PH's family! ;D

    1. Kerabu tends to be watery due to water released from the vegetable unless if you eat it straight away after it has been tossed. This one was already premixed by the chap fan stall but it still tasted very good. By now, you know that my family can eat a whole elephant!

  11. hehe.. when you mention cake together with your KT trip, I wonder why you did not bake a cake there?? maybe your parents do not like sweet stuffs or even more likely, you only had time to eat but no time to cook!! since I see everyday you were busy cari makan, haha..

eih, that's unfair!! your dad has got his time in Bee's enjoying his coffee and also tapao something, but you and your brother and mother were running here and there like "headed" chickens (because you were very clear where you wanna go)..

so there's really a lot of food, but then it was for two meals, considered okay lah.. though you had like 90% of those for a super heavy lunch and 10% left for dinner, average still 50% kan?? muahahaha, that's how makan people see things I supposed, totally different from health freaks, hehe..

I wonder what the roti paung is.. looks like some pandan raisin bread to me.. and aiyoyo, why left that little piece there alone?? or was it for the sake of photographs?? after you snapped a photo then straight away chucked it down your throat?? bcos cannot be that little piece left but the 4 big eaters like you cannot one shot finish it lah~~ haha!!

actually when I look at the last photo as a recap of what you had, just keropok, kerabu and rojak only, that's really not a lot of things.. or probably huge portions?? hehe..

    1. I did not bake in KT because all my tools & equipments are in PJ :D

Not unfair lah, let my dad rest and we all do the running hee..hee... Our lunch was super heavy, in fact everyday was like that. Dinner we have to go slow because still digesting the lunch. So maybe you are right about the 50% average hee..hee,,,

Roti paung is just like ordinary bun but back in those old days, it tasted lots better. More eggs and butter but now the suppliers cut cost and use less eggs and instead of butter they use margarine. I snapped that lonely roti paung just to illustrate how much we have eaten because empty plate won;t look so nice.

True lah, not many dishes but bigger quantities. We like to really focus on just a few to really savor the flavors.

  12. I haven't been to Trengganu, have been wanting to do so but kept postponing. All the food looks very interesting and appetizing. The food have more fiber and very mouth-watering.
