Datenite @ Grub By Ahong & Friends, Section 17

My partner noticed that of late I have been very stressed up and tired (and very grumpy hah!).

So to cheer his madam up, he suggested a night out on Friday. You choose where you want to go, he told me. Ah! That did perk me up a bit.

You know what I want?

This!

There is nothing that a Wagyu steak (some more got discount) cannot do to cheer up a carnivore.

So Friday evening, we set out from Damansara Uptown to Section 17, which is a short distance. I made reservations (via  TABLEAPP) for 6.30pm.

My partner engaged the Waze app but as usual my lahling (darling) is more clever than the app. When the app went "make a u-turn at jalan such and such", he pipes up "Mana tiok???" (that can't be right) and then takes a different route. Adoi ....

We arrived early, slightly past 6.oopm and we were lucky to get a parking spot right in front of the shophouse.

Grub's facade and interior has improved since my last visit back in 2017. We were assigned a table upstairs.

Ordering is via QR system and you may opt to pay online (credit card, e-wallet or online banking) or at the counter. I will share the full menu at the end of this post.

My eyes were very tired and I had a hard time trying to read the menu. So note to self : next time bring reading glasses.

So these were our orders.

For sharing, we had the Special Pani Puri.

Described as "crispy fried puff balls that's filled with potato, chickpeas, onions, spices and flavored water".

Very punchy Indian flavors, these crunchy balls were delicious!  I loved the mint chutney and I believe the "flavored water" is rasam.

Watermelon juice to share and it was a tad sweet for us.

This was my partner's Grilled Chicken Chop served with (what they call) a leaf salad, potato salad and Yorkshire Pudding.

He was very pleased with his order.

And now for the piece de resistance .....

The Wagyu Flank served with leaf salad, potato salad and mustard.

It was cooked beautifully to medium rare.

It was everything I had hoped for but I have to be honest - the meat was chewy due to connective tissue. But I am all right with that because connective tissue = collagen, good for the skin. I will be back for other cuts of steak.

I also ordered a side of potato salad, more for my partner because he is a carb man. I liked the chunky potatoes but the mayonnaise was not to my liking.

It was a very enjoyable dinner and I told my partner that we should revisit and he happily agreed.

As promised, I share the menu below.

You can scan the QR or look at the screenshot menu below.

1. Specials, Lunch and Starters.

2. Steaks.
3. More Steaks, Lamb, Chicken, Pasta and Noodles.

4. More Pasta, Noodles and Sides.
5. More Sides and Sauces.
6. More Sides

7. DIY Kits, Desserts and Drinks.
8. More Drinks.
Well, since Grub serves a variety of steaks (and tomahawks!) I will be back!

This weekend is a long weekend and I shall free my mind and make as if I am a retired person - gardening and Netflix! Happy holidays everyone!

  2. Happy Holidays! Super long weekend! The Special Pani Puri looks tasty 😋 I believe I will like it. Yorkshire pudding brings back memories when I ate them in UK. Never seen them here.

  3. Seems like of late, there are quite a few long weekends! Enjoy your gardening and Netflix. I am enjoying my reading and journaling at my neighbourhood aircon Library hee hee. And so sweet of your partner to suggest a date noticing that you are stressed of late. The special panic puri is something I have not tried before. Your partner's chicken chop looks good to me.

    1. The public holiday is 16-09-2025 (Malaysia Day) and our PM gave us extra day today. I wished there is a public library nearby!

  4. I still haven't been here....but a friend of mine (who came here a few times) told me they're not as good as before...which makes me second-guess if I should still give it a try...though I see you've enjoyed it. For the price of RM157 I think I'd rather have Meat Feds weekend steak offers (RM117 or RM188). Maybe if I make it here, I'll try out one of their cheaper steaks first. ^_~

    1. Oh? Well, I haven't been there often enough to detect the change in standards. Since 2017 till now it's a long time. It's very prudent to try the cheaper steaks first and MeatFeds is the place to be where you are assured of very good steaks.

  5. How's the Yorkshire Pudding? Did it taste oily?
I don't like connecting tissues on steak which make the meat so difficult to be chewed. =.="
