Apple Pie Blues

Who likes apple pie? I am a fan, especially apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Woohoo!

I can't remember the last time I had apple pie, maybe the one from Aeon bakery some three or more years ago.

So I was at Yin's Sourdough Cafe & Bakery (this was back in August 2024) when I spotted their Apple Pie (and Black Forest Cake heh).

Why not? My health reset (stabilizing my weight and keeping my carb addiction in check) has gone well and I am now a bit more relaxed with what I eat.

Meat is my priority and I am still very much meat-based. But I allow myself treats like this every now and then.

Honest review. The Black Forest Cake was dry. It could have been more moist and the filling/frosting could have been more creamy.

Maybe it was left to sit out too long in the display counter. I have had better cake. So sad.

Then my big ass slice of Apple Pie was served. I had expectations. I have my standards for apple pie. After I took a bite, I never thought I would say it - this apple pie needs MORE sugar. There you go.

When I say something needs more sugar, it needs more sugar. I don't like things that are too sweet, just a little bit for other people, could be too sweet for me.

Sugar is bad for us but we have to draw a line somewhere when reducing sugar as an ingredient in a dessert. In the case of this apple pie, too much reduction in sugar resulted in a blah tasting apple pie. The apple filling was tart and bland.

So no, I did not enjoy this apple pie. The crust was not flaky, no butter fragrance (maybe it was not made with butter) and not enough cinnamon/spices in the apple filling.

The only thing I enjoyed was the coffee which was excellent. So no more apple pie for me.

  1. Good morning! Even though I do not really fancy apple pie but I don't mind having as long as the apple filling is juicy and enough for me to detect it. I only had apple pie at Mac restaurants and none other. Maybe because I wasn't as adventurous as you and as observant enough as you when it comes to eating that I could spot other places selling apple pies. I just had 2 buttermilk rotiboys at JB Malaysia on Monday and the buttermilk just oozed out of the bun, I am sure my blood sugar must have spiked up after I ate these 2 rotiboys. Haiz.

  3. I'm not a fan of apple pie coz I simply don't like apples...if it's a blueberry pie, that's a different story altogether! Aiyah, I'm so jealous lah that you're allowing yourself treats more than I allow myself because of our diets...lol. Ya, reducing too much sugar in a dessert may not be the best interest of the dessert..lol. So, this is an apple pie you would not recommend then. I can't imagine how this will go down with people who have a sweeter tooth than us. >.<

  4. I just went Yin's Sourdough (Kiara Bay's outlet) with friends on last week for breakfast. Portion was huge with thick sourdough, but the taste was just so so.
