Lunch @ Kar Hiong

Two weekends ago, my brother decided that he wanted some Chinese food. It was a nice change from our usual choice of Western or Japanese. So we drove up to Restoran Kar Hiong in Subang Jaya.

Steamed Chocolate Prune Cake

I know. The words "steamed" and "prunes" are not very inspiring and conjures the image of a hospital kitchen preparing food for the geriatric ward. Throwing in the word "chocolate" does not help, does it?

How I Spent My Christmas

I don't celebrate Christmas, hence the lack of frantic preparations and festivities. All that I looked forwards to is spending the day at home. I am one of those terribly boring people who does not like to go out. I am happy hanging around at home in my tee shirt and sarong watching exercise videos while munching on keropok or cookies. I'm pretty low maintenance and my partner does not have to worry about taking me on exotic getaways or think of ways to keep me amused during the holiday season. So what did I do on Christmas day?

Tomato Rice (Bastardised Version)

There is a craze in recent times and it's Tomato Rice. I saw one or two recipes here and here. Then I went to watch it on Ochikeron. The recipe is a simple one, just rice, tomato, salt, pepper and olive oil. This cute Japanese girl was raving over it as she ate the Tomato Rice. I am sorry darling, my tongue long corrupted by the likes of sambal belacan, budu and fish sauce, is unrepentant and therefore cannot comprehend your enthusiasm.

Nutella Stuffed Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookies

When SK showed me this very obscene photo I got so excited I wanted to bake what I saw immediately. Yeah, immediately as in NOW, SEKARANG, TONG KIM! If I knew the Tamil word for "now", I would say it out loud too.

An Uninspiring Lunch

I was at The Salad Bar@Damansara Utama last weekend for an early lunch. I have not been there for ages because I fell out of love with their salad :(

Nutella Chocolate Chunk Cookies

Moving on with my stock clearance exercise, it is a really great excuse to bake some cookies! This time it is Nutella. Two bottles of it with bits of hazelnut chocolaty goodness sticking at the bottom and sides. Do you know what expired Nutella smells like?

Southwest Cowboy Chili

When I was a little girl, I used to sit by my grandma and watch westerns like Bonanza, How The West Was Won and The High Chaparral. My grandma has a thing for cowboys. Cowboy songs, cowboy TV shows and anything cowboy. I don't know why. She referred to all those cowboy series as "cowboy phor" (cowboy story in Hokkien). So I guess I had a good dose of cowboys (and the occasional Red Indians) when I was growing up.

My Stingy Chili Plant

I have not had much luck with chilies in my garden. Flower buds appear, bloom and then drop off. Even when the fruit begins to form, it is aborted shortly after.

Salsa Roja Asada

Do you like salsa? I love it a lot! The first time I fell in love with salsa was when I had it at my brother's house. I have another brother and this one loves to cook. A few years ago, he cooked a Mexican themed lunch when my parents came for a holiday.

Pigging Out Again@Epicuro Uptown Damansara

My brother and I were at it again last weekend. We had another pig out session and this time we chose to do it at Epicuro.

Rustic Apple Cake

After baking Blueberry Cheesecake, I had half a tub of sour cream left. And 5 apples in the fridge, 4 red and 1 green. A few days before that, Wendy posted her Rustic Apple Cake which she adapted from Simply Anne's. I thought the cake looked lovely and I just had to bake it.

Blueberry Cheesecake

It is now the final month of the year. How time flies! Soon it will be 2015 and that time of year again for new year resolutions. I am not in the habit of making resolutions but for 2015 I think I may have a few. "I will eat less carbohydrates" is not of them though hee..hee..

My Pathetic M&M Cookies

I found these in my drawer. I don't know how they got there.

Colek (Terengganu Fruit Dip)

When you have a bag of fresh juicy red Jambu Air what comes to mind? If you are from Terengganu, the first thing that pops into your head is COLEK!

Pigging Out At The Home of Sticky Bones

This is not a food review per se but more of me telling you about my weekend makan session. After this outing, I cannot look at another rib for at least another 6 months.

Pumpkin and Carrot Muffins

Just the other day I received an update from Nom Nom Paleo and I saw these gorgeous Paleo Pumpkin and Carrot Muffins. They looked really good to me. I was quite interested to sample a paleo version of muffins but alas, I can't get two ingredients namely almond flour and almond butter. Is almond flour the same as ground almonds?

Chocolate Buttermilk Cupcakes

When I say these cupcakes are good, I mean SERIOUSLY good! The best part is you don't need a cake mixer to prepare the batter. This Chocolate Buttermilk cake has a very special place in my heart because it was the first ever chocolate cake that I baked when I started baking two years ago.

My Bad : Naughty Bites

There is guilt written all over this post. Guilt for partaking in a guilty pleasure.

Fudgy Steamed Chocolate Cake

Gawd! This cake is so fudgy and moist and chocolaty! If I wasn't on a diet, I would have polished off half the cake LOL!

Daddy's Grilled Chicken

Hang on a second. This grilled chicken looks very familiar doesn't it?. It has an uncanny resemblance to Pinoy Chicken Barbecue. But this is different. This is Bobby Flay's recipe or rather Bobby Flay's mother-in-law, Laura's recipe :)

Apple, Bacon and Pecan Salad

I had three strips of streaky bacon leftover after cooking fried rice for my partner. I thought of making something naughty but just three strips is not enough. And just my luck, bacon was totally sold out at the Pearl Pork outlet at Aeon. Sold out, imagine that. It looks like nobody cares about their arteries anymore.

Kay Hong Version 2.0 (Terengganu Braised Chicken Version 2.0)

OK. Confession time. A few years ago in the midst of preparing to cook Kay Hong, I realised to my horror that there was barely half a tablespoon of taucheow (beanpaste) left in the bottle. Yaarrghh!!!! The pork belly, chicken and other ingredients were all ready including the prized hard boiled eggs.

Chef Wan's Walnut Prune Cake

I simply had to attempt this recipe again. Why? Because the last couple of times, I made a mistake in both attempts.

Apple Cranberry and Raisin Cake

Last week I baked Apple Apricot Cake again for my Mum to sample. Mum was so enamored by the cake that she requested me to bake the cake for her to take home to Terengganu. Of course I happily obliged. But I only had about 50g of dried apricots left from the bake and being the stingy person that I am, I was reluctant to buy another batch hah..hah...

Pumpkin with Dried Prawns and Curry Leaves

There are already more than 500 entries for this month's LTU event and Eileen is one busy lady. Who would have thought that the humble pumpkin, fabled to turn into a golden carriage by Cinderella's Fairy Godmother, would garner such overwhelming support. Good to know that so many of us love pumpkins!

Sour Cream Banana Cake

This recipe comes from Minty's Kitchen. I have to agree with Veronica that this is a very good banana cake. It is very moist and tender, the ultimate recipe for a banana cake lover. Whenever I find myself with an abundance of ripe bananas, I turn to this recipe.

Mad Cooking 2 : The Kebab That Wasn't

It's Monday folks and let's have a laugh at PH's latest kitchen disaster! An episode arising from her insistence on saving some not-so-fresh chicken fillet. Take it away, PH!

Coconut and Gula Melaka Pumpkin Pie

I can't believe I spent half the morning at 1-Utama looking for a tart pan. Me. Tart pan. Who would have thought? I am still shaking my head in disbelief.

Apple Apricot Cake

Last month I stocked up on apples to support the LTU Apple event. But I only managed one submission which was Apple Cinnamon Cheesecake. Before the month ended, I was struck with dengue and my plans for the apples went out the window. Luckily, these green apples keep very well.

Pumpkin Pecan Cake

The recipe for this cake comes from the book Lovely Butter Cakes by Amy Wong and KS Lee. However, the cake does not contain any butter but uses corn oil instead. Butter is applied only on the surface of the cake together with icing sugar and orange essence. It is an easy cake to make as it only involves the simple mixing of wet to dry ingredients, pretty much like making muffins.

Peruvian Roast Chicken with Aji Verde Chili Sauce

Knowing how risk averse I am when it comes to trying new recipes, I was rather surprised that I made this Peruvian Roast Chicken. But hey, it's chicken. I'll go anywhere with chicken.

Pumpkin Bars

I am really using dengue recovery as an excuse to eat, aren't I? I know I will regret this when I step onto the scale. But for now my scale will be lying underneath my chest of drawers doing what it does best - collecting dust. Hah!

Lemon Butter Cake

I was tidying up my fridge last weekend and I discovered another two lemons. I had baked a Lemon Butter Cake for my parents the day before and it looks like I can now bake another one for myself hee..hee...

Friday, 3 October 2014

Pumpkin Rice

I wanted to eat something good. Something really good. After a few days of hospital food and "chap fan", I really needed to eat something good!

PH Goes to Hospital

Dear friends, readers and fellow bloggers, if you are wondering why I have been silent, not replying to your comments and not dropping by your blogs, it is because I was hospitalized due to dengue fever.

Lemon Bars

These are my latest discovery. Lemons Bars. Yum personified. God! I could not stop at one or two or three.

Broccoli Bagna What?

Bagna Cauda. Broccoli Bagna Cauda. As I say this, I imagine the folks back home in Terengganu saying "hamik ua koh kueh?" (what on earth is that?).

Monday, 15 September 2014

Apple Cinnamon Cheesecake with Salted Caramel Sauce

It's Apples galore on Little Thumbs Up this month. What do apples remind you of besides keeping the good doctor away?

Let's see - computers, Snow White, Apple Pie and that special person who is the apple of your eye. For me the latest addition to that would be this Apple Cinnamon Cheesecake.

Friday, 12 September 2014

Chocolate Banana Cake

After baking Chocolate Orange Ring Cake, I decided to try another recipe from the book Easy Chocolate. The Chocolate Banana Cake looked very pretty with streaks of melted white chocolate on top and a sprinkling of whole pecans. As they say, don't judge a book by its cover. Or in this case, don't judge a cake by its photo.

Pinoy Chicken Barbecue

This is one of the recipes I bookmarked when I was looking for something to cook for the MFF Philippines event. As always, the chicken lover in me will jump at any roasted or barbecued chicken recipes. And this Pinoy barbecue recipe is no exception. There's always something so irresistible about roasted, grilled or barbecued chicken. Or is it just me?

Mad Cooking

It's Monday morning and I'm depressed. So let's do something lighthearted.

Lemon Cheesecake with Lemon Curd

My love affair with lemons continues with this Lemon Cheesecake. And as if I did not get enough of lemons, I decided to make Lemon Curd for topping.

A Farewell Lunch at Chicago

Last weekend, my brother and I took our Auntie to Chicago. My Auntie was flying home and we wanted to give her a farewell lunch. Initially, we thought of Japanese or Indian but my Auntie had tummy upset the day before. Since she was flying off that evening itself, we reckon that she should eat something that won't aggravate her tummy. Raw fish and spicy curry was out of the question.

Mummy's Easy Meat, Carrots and Potatoes

My partner referred to this dish as Babi Pongteh. In fact any porky dish I cook, he calls it Babi Pongteh. Haiyah, this fellow ah...

Nigella's Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake

In the past, all my chocolate cake photos look like black blobs that no amount of editing could help, rendering them useless to post. But at long last, I can take a decent photo. The secret?

My Auntie's Sweet and Sour Sticky Ribs

My Auntie is a very good cook. And an adventurous one too. She will tune in to all those Taiwanese cooking shows and replicate the dishes in her kitchen.

Monday, 25 August 2014

Chocolate Orange Ring Cake

This cake tastes as good as it looks. I'll admit that there was a whole lot of spatula, spoon and plate licking in the process of baking this cake hah..hah...hah...

Oriental Style Pork and Potato Stew

I was brainstorming the other day (this happened two months ago, this is a stale post hah..hah..) to decide what to cook for a Sunday dinner. And that was a Tuesday, mind you. I like to plan ahead. I have to have a schedule and I like my household run in military precision. Call me mad, but that's how I roll.

My Lemony Chicken

Please excuse my grubby looking chicken. It was unplanned. This roast chicken came about due to a failed bake (the one that ended up buried in the compost bin).
