Lunch @ Kar Hiong

Two weekends ago, my brother decided that he wanted some Chinese food. It was a nice change from our usual choice of Western or Japanese. So we drove up to Restoran Kar Hiong in Subang Jaya.

I got to know this restaurant from my Uncle. We came here a few times and I love the food. It's an unpretentious place that serves good decent food at affordable prices. I hear that it can be very crowded during peak hours which is why we always come early. I hate dining in crowded restaurants.

OK, let's get down to business. My brother told me that when he eats with my Uncle (who is a small eater) they order rice and 3 dishes. And since we two big eaters are sharing a table, we can go up to 6 dishes. Small ones of course hee..hee..

First up. Stir Fried Paku Pakis with Sambal. Very nice. I love paku pakis especially if made into kerabu. But they don't have that here.

Next was the Salted Egg Abalone Mushrooms. I'm afraid it was not so good this time because it had a smell. I thinks it is margarine. It was much better the last time I ate it.

The Honey Pepper Chicken is one of our all time favourites. It is chicken fillet deep fried and tossed in a sweet sauce.

Oh yes, must not forget our favorite condiments, fresh chopped garlic and cili padi. If my auntie were here, she would wallop the whole lot and ask for refills.

Another favourite is the Bittergourd Fried with Eggs. This one my brother ordered a medium size which was very wise. Or else we would be fighting for it hee..hee...

The last dish to come was the Steamed Assam Fish. It was pretty good and the fish was very fresh. But I admit that it is not as good as my grandma's assam fish. Nevertheless, we polished it off.

I was digging at the fish head for whatever soft tender flesh that was there. By that time, my brother already surrendered or maybe he was giving his cher (big sister) a chance to enjoy a bigger share of the food.

That was it, 5 dishes and we were very full and satisfied. My brother picked up the tab and if I remember correctly it came to around RM64.00. This was inclusive of 1 bowl of rice and a pot of tea. I don't mind coming up here again to try the other dishes on the menu.

And guess what? We did drop by again last weekend. This time with our uncle in tow. As  you all know, my brother and I are total animals when it comes to food. Somehow, with our uncle around, we were very tame. After we called out dish number 4, uncle said "That should be enough isn't it?". Oh okieeeee....... The two big eaters nodded obediently in unison and the waiter went off with our orders. We become timid 8 years olds in our uncle's presence hee..hee...hee...

This was my uncle's pick. The Assam Mixed Seafood. It was alright, a mix of fish fillet, prawns and squids in the exact same gravy as the Steamed Assam Fish.

I wanted the Honey Pepper Abalone Mushrooms but the waiter made a mistake. So I had to eat the Salted Egg Abalone Mushroom. Again. Grrr.... But it was better than last week's as it was not "smelly".

Take a look at my brother's condiment saucer. He loves garlic. And so do I.

I also ordered this vegetable dish. I can't remember the name. It has 3 vegetables (long beans, brinjal and ladied fingers) fried with sambal. I love it!

Dish number 4 was my brother's selection, deep fried mantis prawns in some kind of sauce. They don't look like prawns at all but tasted pretty good.

It was my turn to pick up the tab and it came to RM49.60. This has to be one of the cheapest restaurant outing for me so far. After that we went to a mall in SS2. I am not too sure what mall is that. Good grief! Sorry, I don't go out much but I think this is Tropicana Mall. While waiting for my uncle to buy his things, I spotted some pretty shoes.

I haven't seen such pretty shoes before as I buy shoes only once every two or three years. Are you shocked? I know some of you girls (or guys) buy shoes every few months. Like I said, I am low maintenance.

Then I saw these cute colourful sandals for young girls. My young niece is a lot more fashionable than I am and I am sure she would love these.

Anyway, I should be doing some shopping next year (next year = tomorrow) because my three years is up and my shoes are looking mighty scruffy.

With that I shall end by wishing each and every one of you

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2015!

  1. Morning Phong Hong.. Wah, kam ngam geh! We also went to Kar Hiong last week for lunch.. From my office to Kar Hiong very near only, so sometimes we go there for lunch too.. Usually we would go to "X-Frens" located next to the dobi, but recently, our lady boss decides that she wants to go to Kar Hiong.. She likes the "home-cooked" style of food there. Her favourites are the steamed tung-choi pork and minced meat potatoes.. Of all the photos above, we only ordered the fukua egg before, teehee.. The last time we went, we had kangkong with belacan, minced meat potatoes, steamed tung-choi pork, wine chicken (something like that) and fukua egg :)

  8. My oh my! 2 persons eating 5 dishes is a lot...kekeke!! The salted egg abalone mushrooms do look greasy. That 3 vege dish is called "say tai teen wong" (4 heavenly kings?) and usually comes with petai as the 4th vege (but I always ask them to omit it coz they're called stinky beans for a reason). And fried mantis prawns will never look as they are (coz they're quite hideous looking), so they're usually de-shelled (and minced) into prawn meat, coated and then fried.

Happy New Year to you and your family! See you in 2015 :)

    1. Hee..hee...I eat too much :) I think they omitted the petai because it is expensive. Oh, now I know why the mantis prawns were all mangled beyond recognition LOL!
