My Favorite Day

Public Holiday! heh..heh.. Especially when it falls on a work day or better still on a Sunday or Monday. Today is Malaysia day and yes, it's great when it falls on a Friday too!

And yesterday was the mid-autumn festival. In days of old when I was very young, I looked forwards to carrying a lantern in the neighborhood together with my cousins and other kids. That was great fun!

But now, mid-autumn festival is just another day. But hey, I needed some cheering up. I was feeling listless at the office and time seemed to stand still.

So. I decided to drop by TK after depositing a cheque at the bank.

Heh..heh... A little present for myself. Eh, nobody gave me any mooncakes, ok?

It was after all mid-autumn festival and I should at least have a slice of mooncake. There were a few people at the bakery buying mooncakes too.

I bought one Golden Emerald with Yolk and a Shanghai Mooncake to share with my partner.

Pandan flavor is my favorite. When I was a kid, the only filling available was red bean. There was no such thing as variety then.

Mmmm...Shanghai Mooncake. I remember someone gave me one a long time ago and it had flaky skin like puff pastry. It was awesome. I wasn't sure if this one was the same.

You don't eat a mooncake by biting into it although I was tempted to do so. I was hungry you see. So I did the conventional thing and sliced it into dainty segments.

I don't think this Shanghai Mooncake has flaky skin.

I love this! Pandan flavor with salted egg yolk. Yummy! Yummy! Better still if they had mung bean paste inside.

Bah! No flaky skin. It's more like biscuit but this was also good. It had a hint of vanilla. Don't know if my nose was playing tricks on me.

My ration. Must not overindulge. Must save some for my partner.

I had my mooncakes with a mug of hot black coffee. No sugar. The mooncakes were not too sweet, just nice.

So that was my dinner yesterday evening. A quiet one with no fanfare. No lanterns.

Then it was off for an early night. I was feeling damn good. Because tomorrow (today) is a holiday! And I want to mop the floor. Hah..hah....

  2. Happy Mid Autumn Festival and Happy Malaysia Day to you. You could still carry a lantern last night and our flag this morning!
This year I cannot celebrate but several kind souls gave me few boxes of assorted yummy moon cakes. I could finish 2 a day like a meal and I don't want to weigh myself till next year.

  4. Traditional skin!!! That's what I like...no snowskin, no flaky skin for me (that one you had sure was an epic fail, obviously not the way it should be)...and lotus paste, no thank you to all the rest.

Ummmmm...you did not get any homemade ones? Some people were busy making their own - too expensive to buy outside, that's for sure.

  8. I'm not a big fan of mooncakes, but my favourite flavour is the pandan. My son's favourite flavour too! It is nice to treat oneself once in a while. Enjoy!

  9. I had my share of mooncakes in Aberdeen, my friend made them using chickpeas and red beans. They were so nicely baked and tasted so fresh and yummy... Yes, nowadays mooncake festivals are no kore the same as the yesteryears when I was young... Just sweet memories remain....

  13. I do eat mooncakes but love the ones with salted egg yolks and also the ones with all the different types of nuts for me to chew on. I stopped buying mooncakes for many years. This year I was blessed with some mooncakes from friend and neighbour.

  14. Hi Phong Hong,
This year I didn't make any mooncakes as we are not celebrating the festive season. My big kids were rather disappointed though so I bought just 2 mini snow skin mooncakes for them.
Mop the floor ... hee .. hee.. as always, never ending household chores!

  16. I didn't buy the traditional mooncakes this year, just 3 mini shanghai types. Yours look tasty. You prefer mung bean paste rather than lotus paste?

    1. I like lotus paste and also mung bean paste. If I can have both in a mooncake, it would be nice :)

    2. Those cheaper mooncakes do mix lotus and mung bean paste because lotus is expensive whereas mung beans are not so expensive.

    3. Oh I see... I once bought from Amway and they had pandan lotus paste with some mung bean which surrounded the egg yolk. Very nice that one.

    1. Usually when the old folks are gone, traditional ways of celebrating is not observed so strictly. But still, it was good that you spend time with your family.
