Ah Hua Bak Kut Teh

Mum was hankering for bak kut teh, and to satisfy her craving, we went to Ah Hua Bak Kut Teh @ SS4.

She loves the delicious bak kut teh at Sungai Way but we were not keen to go there because (1) we don't know if that place is still in operation and (2) parking there is very difficult.

So we settled for Ah Hua Bak Kut Teh since the location was convenient. My brother took me here many many years ago (I can't even remember when, but it was way before I started blogging). I remembered the bak kut teh was pretty good but somehow we never returned.

The set up with very rudimentary, very old kopitiam style. There is no menu, a lady will come and take your orders/make recommendations.

My brother did the ordering.

The side orders - yu char kueh/youtiao and tofu puffs.

Lettuce - the only vegetable that they serve. It's basically blanched and topped with fried shallots and a dollop of oyster sauce on the side.

The bak kut teh is the light colored type with ribs, pork leg and pork belly. Unfortunately they did not have spare parts.

Then there is the usual condiments of sliced chili padi, chopped garlic and two types of soy sauce.

We like the sweet thick soy sauce.

The serving portion was too small for the three of us, so my brother put in an order for another serving.

The broth from the first bowl of bak kut teh was mild, not the usual punchy tasting bak kut teh broth that we are used to. The pork trotter was not as tender as we would have liked.

The broth from the second serving was even milder, in fact it was very diluted. So it was a disappointment although not entirely bad. I don't know if we were unlucky and got there on a bad day or what.

Total damage was RM140.00 which we felt was steep especially seeing that portion size was modest (mum could eat more hah..hah..) and the taste was simply below par.

So I guess we would have to find another bak kut teh joint preferably one at Subang Jaya area. Any recommendation is welcomed!

  2. No more back kut teh at Starling mall food court? I remember there used to be one there. BKT I usually just eat around my area which has many eateries so I don't know any bkt near your area. Pao Xiang BKT at 1u tastes ok to me but of course price is higher than bkt outside malls.

  3. Pao Xiang BKT at 1u should taste better than this very light diluted bkt but they don't give much bkt broth.

  4. I am surprised that old style kopitiam does not serve spare parts! That contributed to the failure of the taste with steep prices. Normally you can get more than these dishes at Klang BKT for under RM100 with superb soup.
I would recommend you visit this BKT outlet at the corner shop in SS2 which is behind the Public Bank row. The moment you enter from LDP, you can spot the big corner BKT shop which has interior wall posters telling you they were the first BKT to arrive from China. Place clean, soup nice and price friendly and near home too!

    1. I think I know which shop you are referring to. I have seen it before and must suggest to my brother. I actually don't like going to SS2 because of the traffic and parking is very susah. Especially with mum tagging along, it can be challenging.
