It was Friday night. Our date night. We have since stopped visiting my favorite place. I feel kind of sad. Not for me but for the restaurant. The last time we were there, I didn't enjoy the food. I guess it is tough to be consistent when the chef can't be there 100% of the time.
We went up to our go-to Japanese restaurant but sadly they were closed due to an unscheduled water disruption. So how? My partner suggested we go to Ikano Power Center and see what was available.
At the last minute, he said hey, shall we have Hokkien Mee? Well, why not? I'm all for Hokkien Mee and our favorite is Tiong Hokkien Mee@Damansara Uptown (there is another Hokkien mee joint a little further up but we don't like that one. The food is super oily and not to our taste).
I was looking forwards to the noodles. The last time I had Hokkien Mee was at my family gathering when my parents were here.
This was at my brother's house, tapau-ed by another brother. |
This Hokkien Mee was from the oily place.
Tiong Hokkien Mee used to operate in the evenings at Dim Sum Kitchen (which has since closed down and now replaced by Patissez) and not long after, occupied the shop lot a few doors away.
It's quite popular but not as popular as that oily place. We ordered the Hokkien Meehoon and Hokkien Koay Teow.
The Hokkien Meehoon was served very quickly. This is also as considered fast food, no?
Then came the Hokkien Koay Teow came shortly after. Mmmm...I enjoyed my noodles, with preference leaning towards the koay teow.
Next time it should be meehoon for him and koay teow for her. No need to share share hee..hee...hee...
And to make our dinner more balanced, we also ordered a plate of greens.
Our simple kailan stir fried with garlic. Loved it.
For drinks, we had barley.
The bill came to only RM29.00, our cheapest dinner yet. I think we should do this more often.
Eh, you wanted to eat Hokkien Mee but ended up ordering meehoon and kway teow instead? You don't like those big fat Hokkien noodles? I only eat this noodle if it's fried with dark soy, not loh mee as the kan sui taste will be too apparent. Judging by the amount of lard from the oily place, my guess is the popular Damansara Uptown Hokkien Mee?
ReplyDeleteWell, he did the ordering hah..hah... and I happen to prefer kuay teow. Yes, got the oily place right :)
DeleteNampak sangat menyelerakan menu2 tu PH.. harga pun kira murah kan.. :)
ReplyDeleteYa, kira murah juga lah. Sekarang ni kalau makan kat restoran, jangan harap harga di bawah RM50.00.
DeleteI am a "yin yong" person, I prefer koay teow cham bihun when having Hokkien Mee... different textures give you a more layered feel mah.... :P
ReplyDeleteI don't like to cham one. For me it's either mee or kuay teow.
DeleteThere is a Hokkien Mee in Malaysia Boleh in Jurong Point, when it first start selling, i loves it, have not been eating it for quite sometimes as find the standard drop...
ReplyDeleteMaybe you can find another place which is better.
DeleteWahh terus rasa nak masak hokien meehon macam tu..
ReplyDeletePandai pulak masak hokkien meehoon. PH ni orang hokkien tapi tak pandai hah..hah...
DeleteI would not like anything that is oily. These days, I cut down the oil I usually used by half - things may end up getting stuck to the wok but can always wash later...and steam or boil or bake in the oven instead of deep frying. Save money and it is healthier too!
ReplyDeleteMe too, don't like too oily. Besides, cooking oil prices have gone up :(
DeleteI have seen both places you mentioned in uptown but only eaten at the branch of the oily place but can't remember much about the taste. We always order mee (some refer to it as lor mee but it is not as thick as lor mee) mix with mee hoon. I have never tried kway teow hokkein style. Maybe I will try it the next time I am at a hokkein mee place.
ReplyDeleteSomehow, I prefer kuay teow and I hope that you like it.
DeleteI prefer the oilier Hokkien Mee from the other restaurant but Tiong's fried chicken wings are the BEST in the world. I bet you forgot to try or finished all before snapping photo.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't order the chicken wings. Since it comes highly recommended, next time we will :)
DeleteCan i say Hokkien Mee is some sort like Mee kicap PH? Sebab nampak hitam hihi.... Mmy mom dulu dulu kalau buat mee mesti hitam hitam like this. You know what is the ingredient? Only ikan bilis tumbuk and kicap.....Even simple but mee kicap my mom is the best among the best haha....But sadly now my mom cannot cook anymore huhu...
ReplyDeleteLebih kurang lah like mee kicap because they use dark soya sauce. Oh, I must try you mom's recipe. Sounds easy. Ikan bilis tumbuk gives a lot of flavor. I'm sorry that your mom can't cook anymore. Now it's Hainom's turn to cook :)
DeleteToo oily, I also cannot stand it. Like my noodle to be consistent and enough "wok hei".
ReplyDeleteYes, to me the wok hei very important or else no kick.
DeleteAnak2 kaknoor suka jenis mee mcm ni PH
ReplyDeleteKalau gi makan luar mesti nk order jenis mee hitam2 mcm ni hehe pendekata diaorang suka mee hitam mcm PH jugak hehe
Kak Noor, PH rasa warna hitam tu yang jadi daya penarik. Makin hitam makin sedap hah..hah...
Deletedo try this, ask for extra 'kacang'.. http://kyspeaks.com/2014/04/13/ky-eats-classic-hokkien-dishes-at-hua-xing-restaurant-sungei-way/
ReplyDeleteKacang? Oh, OK hah..hah... Sungei Way, I think I can get there with my bro.
DeletePH, aahlah yang oily hoKkien mee tu memang nampak tak best..
ReplyDeleteMinyak aje yang banyak..the Hokkien bee hoon nampak sedap..
I can imagine the taste..mesti makan terkulat2 tak cukup kan..hehe
kalau for me lah dulu..sekarang dah tak boleh..hahaha
Ayu, tempat berminyak tu paling popular. PH tak faham kenapa hah...hah... Yang ni OK, sedap dan harga berpatutan. Ayu kena jaga pengambilan carbo. PH sebenarnya kena jaga jugak tapi dah ter"over" hah..hah..
DeleteOhhhh ... don't quote me on this, but I've heard some sad news about your fave restaurant ... if word is to be believed, it may be closing permanently by the end of the year :(((
ReplyDeleteOh dear...what a shame. I thought they had a good concept going but sadly they could not sustain.
DeleteI always order greens too. Malaysia has some of the best greens in the world I think - so much variety.
ReplyDeleteI love my greens too, just simply stir fried with garlic and salt.
DeleteI love Hokkien Mee and quite long time didn't have it. Hokkien me to me = fried big fat noodles, I never order Hokkien fried koay teow or meehoon, unless someone dine with me request it :P
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the big fat mee but my partner did the ordering and he prefer meehoon. I suggested koay teow pulak.
DeleteRM29 tu memang cheaplah, PH. Mana nak dapat macam tu. But I never eat Hokkien Mee. Lagi satu mee like this I tak berapa suka. I lagi suka kalau mi nampak pedas gitu ^_^ Barulah membuka selera besar-besar ^_^
ReplyDeleteLast time I don't like Hokkien mee. But now tetiba suka pulak. I think depends lah on who is the cook. This one boleh tahan.
DeleteI don't mind sharing because I want to taste the beehoon and the kuay teow. I also like the fat noodle. The stir fried kai lan looks good.
ReplyDeleteThe kai lan was delicious. Nice garlic flavor.
