I Ate His Lunch


One evening my partner told me that he was having lunch with someone the next day. So I need not prepare lunch for him. Yay! Holiday! hee...hee...

But I am very forgetful these days. The next morning, I went about getting his lunch ready when it suddenly occurred to me that, eh! He is eating out today! Alamak!

Since I was already halfway through, I just finished the job.


Let me just share how I get this done. The food is prepped ahead of time except for the vegetables. Rice is cooked on Sunday, cooled, portioned and frozen. Same for the meat dish.

I started off one weekend by cooking 3 portions of 3 different meat dishes (so I have 9 portions in stock). These are stored in the freezer. Then every weekend, I cook to replenish the stock (I need 5 portions every week).

The evening before, I will take out one rice and one meat dish to the fridge to thaw overnight. What I need to do the next morning is to steam them. And of course fry the vegetables.


So that day, I took his lunch to work. All this time, I have never tasted the food I cooked for him. I never knew what the food was like, I mean how it turned out after being frozen, defrosted and steamed. And would vegetables fried at 5:30am and eaten cold be yucky.


Moment of truth. As I tucked in I realized that mmmm....not bad eh! It was actually quite good (blowing my own trumpet pon...pon...pon...). No wonder he never complained wahahahaha!!

So I'm glad I forgot and had a chance to taste the food. It passed quality control :)

And oh, I also do my own lunches. Mine is simpler. I cook for the week, stash it in the fridge and I don't even bother heating up. No tummy upsets so far.


Roasted pork loin, roasted capsicum, coleslaw and I curi some of his fried peashoots. No rice for me :D

  1. Pork looks so so good. I wouldn't mind having that for my lunch. Oh? You have packed lunch every day? So nice, no need to eat out. Healthier and nicer...and I guess, cheaper too. Very the kaya lah you? Hehehehehe!!!!

    1. It involves quite a bit of work but I think the sacrifice is worth it. No lah, not kaya at all. These ingredients costs more than chap fan hah..hah...

  3. I don't bother heating up too sometimes.. When I'm too lazy to walk to the pantry, or when I have pork dishes sometimes, I paiseh wana go pantry microwave, later got 8poh wana see what's inside.. I also eat it just like that during lunch time, no tummy aches too.. Did I tell you I did the same for Gavin's porridge lastime when he was 8 months old? I cooked porridge, divide into 8 portions and freeze (tell me, how to cook porridge for a 8 month old baby, who only eats less than 1 tbsp).. But if I post this question in those FB mummy group, sure got lots of hate-notes and hate-replies about overnight food and wind problem for baby yada yada..

    1. Eh, freezing porridge is no problem at all. My cousin's wife did that for her baby and the kid grew up healthy. Some people cannot accept frozen food but I have been eating like that for years and it is not an issue at all. So, what you are doing is perfectly alright.

  4. You even freeze the rice? You must have a very big freezer and many small heatproof containers (to store all those portions for 2 people)....wakakaka! Your partner is very lucky to have you wake up at 5.30 am every morning to prepare his lunch! :D

    1. I bought those made in Korea clip lock glass containers when they were on sale years ago. And I have a stand alone freezer. It makes food prep much easier and though it takes up most of my weekends, I think it worth the effort.

    Your cooking and bakings definitely matched the Michellin standards! Why need to check and taste how your partner ate them?

  6. Actually I also don't mind eating cold dish straight from the fridge. But I always scared if it would be bad. Maybe I should be "brave" and try it, since you have no tummy upsets so far...

    1. Yes you should try it. I do it all the time too, eat cold foo straight from the fridge. My stomach is ok with the cold food.

    2. Yup, I have being doing this for some time and no tummy issues. As long as the food is hygienically prepared and kept not more than a week in the fridge, it is fine.

    1. Actually I wake up earlier than that :) I sleep early, by 9pm.

  8. this looks more appealing than a regular chap fan meal purchased from the stalls ... the food looks fresh and the portions are generous. no wonder no complaints, heheh :D

    1. I find that I feel better eating my own food. I tend to feel drowsy and lethargic after eating those from chap fan even without the rice. Probably due to those seasonings and additives they use.

  11. Wow! You pre-cooked your meal on weekend. I guess that save time when you need to rush on weekday for work.

    I did cooked and brought my own lunch when I worked in bank before. Before lunch I heat my lunch box in microwave.
