Eh, You Fat Already!

Bloody fool. How are you supposed to react when someone says that to you (assuming you are fat)? Smile? Show black face? Back in the good old days, I would have given him my killer stare which could potentially make flowers wilt.

But I'm older, milder and wiser. In fact I didn't even flinch. So I smiled. Besides, he's my client, and I made a mental note to increase his fees by 15%.

I have been in situations like this in the not too distant past. I don't know how they could do this. Point blank. Kapow! Those words still vibrate my eardrums, like it was only yesterday when they hit the gong.

1. Girl! You fat already.
2. Eh, you put up (sic) weight.
3. My dear, you have grown big and beautiful (the beautiful did not help one bit).
4. You have put on quite a lot of weight (Chinese New Year 2013 I still remember. Cheh!)

When I was born, I was a puny 6 pounder, a baby that did not do well during feeding. But somewhere along the line, genetics kicked in. My fat genes started expressing themselves. And they meant business.

Relatives would make remarks that hurt me a great deal. "What did your grandma feed you?" was one of the zingers. Haiz.....

Anyway, here I am.  Back to square one after all that dieting and low carbing. Who cares right?

So. I baked these for giveaways. Share the fats so to speak.

All for them. None for me. Hah!

They smelled so damn good in the oven. Resist...resist....but cannot......

So. I baked some more the next day.

One for me and one for a lady in the Uptown neighborhood. By the time these were baked and cooled, it was evening. No natural light for better shots. So these will do.

I had two slices. The rest I stashed in the freezer.

What were they?

Banana Chocolate Chip Cake
Recipe source : Phong Hong

Ingredients :

- 250g self-raising flour, sifted
- 150g sugar
- 250g butter
- 250g sour cream
- 2 eggs
- 4 ripe bananas, mashed
- 1 cup chocolate chips (tossed in a tablespoon of flour) and extra for topping

Method :

1. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
2. Add vanilla and eggs, one at a time and continue to cream until well mixed.
3. Using a spatula, fold in the mashed bananas.
4. Then add flour (in 3 additions) and sour cream (in two additions) alternately. I added flour first, fold, then add the sour cream, fold, add flour, fold, add sour cream, fold and lastly the remaining flour and fold. Sorry for being repetitive.
5. Then fold in the chocolate chips.
6. Pour batter into baking pan or in my case, two disposable loaf pans.
7. Scatter extra chocolate chips on top.
8. Bake in preheated oven at 160C for 50 minutes or until skewer inserted into center of the cake comes out clean.

Note : This cake is very moist and rich. Feel free to reduce the sour cream by half.

  2. Hi Phong Hong, your cake look so inviting. Best to go with kopi o kaw. People in 3rd world country no food to eat, so we are indeed very blessed get to and try all kind of food. So put on little weight never mind lah as long as we are healthy and eat in moderate amount.

There are always blunt people around, no tact and diplomacy. Often I also get this kind of remark...You put on so much weight lah! What you eat arh, so fat already? One ex blogger friend even comment in my photo that I got 3 layers of belly fat. Even thou we are fat or big on certain part of the body so what? No need to be so direct and blunt mah. Imagine we tell the same thing back to them, I am sure they will be black face and say no lah, where got. hahaha....Now I just ignore say... boss gave big fat bonus, so I eat and sleep well every night.

    Best regards,
    Amelia

    1. hah..hah...Amelia, you really know how to take it in good spirit! I guess I more or less accept the way that I am. When I was younger, I was more self conscious and sensitive. Not anymore, I am quite happy but still don't want to be too fat hah..hah...

  3. I was born almost 9lbs and was fat like a baby dustbin with few offers from milk companies for their ads. No kidding! Somehow I became thinner and my height simply shot up to 6 feet. Heh heh...

Your Banana Chocolate Chip Cake looks tasty and unique combination. I have only heard of chocolate banana cakes which had too much chocolate creams on it.

  6. I'll gladly get fat eating your cakes! :D I don't eat all that much (at least not more than the next person), I don't snack, I'd say I eat medium portions...but still puts on weight. I know of a lot of other people who eats much more than me but don't put on weight. That's why I think it's the fat genes we have....haha...we can't help it! >.<

But I am surprised that you still get hurt by such remarks seeing that you even blog about your size without a care. I guess nobody wants to be reminded of that taboo word and people should know better than to make such hurtful remarks. We're not fat....we're plus sized...kekeke! ;D Anyway, who cares, my dear...embrace life, embrace your size! ^_*

By the way, since we both dislike sour cream, does the cake taste ok with sour cream in it coz I do love banana cakes.

    1. Oh, I get you! I can put on weight just by smelling the food hah..hah...low metabolic rate they say. But I do eat a lot and perhaps it would help if I cut back some.

I accept that I am fat but somehow when someone says it to my face, I do feel a little miffed. But yeah, embrace being plus sized. I hope it becomes a trend one day wahahahaha!

Now, you can't taste the sour cream in the cake. In fact you won't even detect it is there unless told. What it does is it makes the cake moist. It is also used in baked American style cheesecake for that purpose. So, I like sour cream only in cakes or in dressings like Ranch Dressing. But not by itself.

  7. Interesting though, people who tells us we're fat are not exactly the epitome of fitness sometimes (well, a lot of times). Hahaha

  8. Hmmmm...at this rate, you gone case liao!!! Doomed to end up looking like me! There is still hope though - next time, you bake cakes, send to me - do not eat any yourself. LOL!!!

  11. Just because he is the client he thinks he can get away with being tactless. I fully support you in increasing his fees.

Your cakes look so delicious. I thought those are raisins instead of chocolate chips. I will buy some budget cakes from aeon supermarket and put in my fridge so that I can eat them after reading your blog but theircakes won't be half as delicious as yours. Sobs, sobs, sobs!

  12. Life would be less meaningful without feeding ourselves with nice and good food! Lantak what people say, as long as you are happy and really happy enjoying what goes into the mouth... as my kids always say.. YOLO! You Only Live Once!

  13. Is better that people comment that you have put on weight rather than you have lose weight (which is not a good sign) as normally only people with sickness will lose weight and become skinny

How good if you are my neighbour

    1. I suppose so hah..hah... If you are my neighbor, I can share the fats with you LOL!

  14. That's a smart move! Instead of saying anything that could offend him in return, increase his fees and that'll probably be of satisfaction. XD Omg, banana chocolate chip cake! I know for a fact that it's actually tasty - and ignore those folks who commented about your weight. Like what my American friend once said, you still need a bit of fat to be healthy. *winks*

What Libby said is accurate, though.

  15. Luckily you owned up. I would never have believe that "all for them, none for me" crap. Who would bother to even bake then?

I get that "fat" comment regularly too. These days I just shrug, or reply "I know".

  17. Some people just love to make unkind remarks. When you are thin, they will say things like, "you look like lidi or you are all skin and bones, etc." You can never satisfy these people. Even if you are of the right size, they will still say some negative things too. I would gladly be your neighbour so you can pass some of your baking and cooking over! Lol!

  18. It definitely doesn't help that we no longer have a 25-year-old's metabolism! Deep inside, I still harbour hopes of fitting into the jeans I wore 15 years ago, but I guess one of the lessons of life is to not to harshly judge ourselves (or others) for things like our weight. Otherwise, we'll never feel happy or secure .....

    1. Even at 25, my metabolism was sluggish :( But I was much, much slimmer because I was more active. My jeans from yesteryears are still sitting in my cupboard. I refuse to let go hah..hah..hah....

  19. Every year I go back to Malaysia visiting, the first thing my relatives said to me was "Wah, you put on weight arr?" What can I say, just smiled and said "hoe sek hoe ju, of course fat la". Some people who are more tactful will comment "Wah u fatt fook already". Is this really a form of greeting for us Malaysian? I am sure the angmo won't just smile and say nothing when one commented about their weight.

I don't mind if others commented I become tanned, but please don't tell me I fat already!! I will go sad for a few days one you know! :p

But, come to think of it, if I fat already means I got more than enough food to eat, actually not that bad also la hor? :p
