My DIY Smoothie Bowl

Remember when I attempted a smoothie bowl back in 2016? Yup, that was a disaster because my blender broke down resulting in a lumpy watery smoothie.

I have since purchased a new blender that has so far been used only to make salad dressings. After eating two smoothie bowls here and here, I decided it was time for another attempt at home.

Some weeks ago I was left with three very ripe smallish bananas and I had those peeled, sliced and frozen. I used to freeze bananas to make smoothies back in the days when I used to jump rope for exercise.

Yeah, that was some 15 or more years ago when I was so slim and fit. I could jump rope non-stop for 45 minutes just like a boxer hah..hah... After my workout, I would make me a mug of banana smoothie.

Then I went into depression and lost my will to exercise. But I still consumed smoothies and due to the lack of activity, I started to pile on the weight. So I stopped making smoothies.

But now that I am back in good health and working out again, I think I can allow myself the occasional smoothie treat. So I went to Jaya Grocer and bought some blueberries and strawberries.

Ah, I want to complain. What has happened to Korean strawberries lately? They are no longer sweet. This batch that I bought (and another earlier) were sour/tasteless.  Has anyone experienced this?

Anyway, to make this smoothie, I blended the frozen bananas with some Greek yogurt, almond milk and some ice cubes. I know some of you dislike yogurt and I admit that I myself do not like plain yogurt. It is very tart and has that sour fermented smell that puts me off.

But once blended with ripe bananas, the yogurt smell and taste is gone and in its place what you have is a thick delicious smoothie. When I first made this banana smoothie for my parents to try, my mum was hesitant.

So I got ready a tumbler of water for her just in case she found the smoothie vile tasting. Guess what? She chugged down the whole mug of smoothie and was impressed that it tasted so good.

Then she served my dad the second batch of smoothie and that also went well. All down the hatch it went! So if my yogurt fearing parents can take a yogurt banana smoothie, so can you hee..hee...

As you will notice, I sprinkled me some very fancy granola on my smoothie. That was a Dragonfruit granola, gifted to me a few months back. It has the usual granola things inside including dried dragonfruit, longan and dried pineapples.

So that was my Sunday lunch, a very fruity and crunchy one.

  4. I'm not as brave as your parents to try coz apart from not liking yogurt, I also don't like almond milk or any milk for that matter...hihihi! ;) The very first time I bought Korean strawberries (after being introduced to it by you), I also found that they weren't as sweet but I'm ok with it since I like them less sweet anyway but as long as they're not tart! ;P

The Winter is just over and there are no strawberries from South Korea yet lah. Once I visited their strawberry farms during winter and all were housed sleeping inside their green houses!

  16. I only bought Korean strawberries once recently and they were sweet :)
I think my blender can't blend ice, hopefully it doesn't affect the taste if I omit it.
