It was yet another Friday evening. Having gone to Sam Yu twice already, we decided to try the other one, Sam You.
Actually, this was our second visit. The previous visit, I did not snap any pics because I was in a bad mood hah..hah..
This Sam You is bigger than Sam Yu. It's a very typical old school Chinese restaurant. I can imagine wedding dinners being held here.
Pickled green chillies. My favorite condiment. My partner poured soya sauce directly into the sauce plate because those chillies are all for me.
Kacang. We love to munch on these while waiting for our orders.
My partner was in a playful mood. He was encouraging me to take pictures. "Plate and bowl, want to take, ah?" he asked. "Rice also must take, ah?"
Heh..heh...
Guinness Ribs. Repeat order from previous visit. It's awesome. I can't describe it.
Brinjals and long beans. If you don't like vegetables, this one will convert you.
There were loads of hae bee (dried prawns) fried till super crispy, one of the factors why this vege dish is so full of flavors.
The Lemon Chicken. The chicken was perfectly executed. Very crispy and the meat was tender and moist.
However, the lemon sauce was disappointing. I wished that the chef had used fresh lemon juice instead of artificial flavoring.
My partner was particularly indulgent that evening. He even offered the receipt for me to snap. "Nah, receipt want to take, ah?" He even held it down for me.
This may be our favorite Chinese restaurant. And we visited a third time.

This is a strange one. Recommended by the waitress. She said it is fish lips.
Apparently it is obtained from a very big fish. I have never had anything like this before. The texture is like firm jelly. I don't really like it.
I am like a small kid. I eat from a plate with fork and spoon.
I have a feeling I will be coming here very often.

DeleteI have walked passed this restaurant many times when I was working nearby but never eaten there. Looks like a pricey place.

DeleteI have eaten at this place and I enjoyed their pork ribs! I guess that fish lips is actually a part near the tail of the huge fish. I also felt geli eating them. LOL

DeleteHi Phong Hong, mood is very crucial. Last weekend, attended a wedding dinner of my distant nephew [120 tables] but no mood to take any photos cos' the lighting affects the colour of the dishes. Colourful dishes looks dull. BTW, artificial lime and lemon flavouring easily available from the stores.

DeleteFish lips I think is like fish maw...gelatinous-like which I don't fancy much either. Like TM, I think it's from the tail end of a big fish like sharks. They say shark fin is the quality part whilst fish lips is the cheaper end product. If you look at CNY reunion menus, those that are pricier comes with shark fin soup and the cheaper menus have fish lip soup instead....haha! :D It usually comes in dry form and (in thin strands) and has to be rehydrated before cooking (although I've not seen it in such huge pieces before).
ReplyDeleteI did not know what to expect when this thing came to the table. It looked like pork fat to me hah..hah... Sad to say I did not like it due to the taste and texture. I prefer fish maw.

Just took two fresh oranges, stripped them and ate for my dinner... hahaha.. no, I am not on diet, just too lazy to go out or cook anything for myself for I had a super heavy lunch this afternoon... that is why the drooling-over-your-food syndrome... hahaha

DeleteI like the pickled chillies too, but I'm also fond of boiled peanuts found in some places - at least I think they're boiled, not sure how they prepare them actually.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, those boiled peanuts are also a favorite of mine! They are braised with herbs and soya sauce I think.

ReplyDeleteI thought that fish lips dish was a tofu dish if just by looking at the picture. Tofu in thick gravy, yes please. Fish lips, don't even know wtf is that >.<
I actually prefer to go to weddings that are held in restaurants because it has a more informal feel to it. Anyway, that fish lips dish I won;t have again. Too weird for me.
