An Expensive Lunch

There was a time when I was crazy about steaks. I think it was my brother's influence. When he was obsessing about ramen, so was I.

And then came steaks. The search for that perfect steak. Which resulted in huge dents to my budget. But as I have emphasized many times before, I wear selipar Jepun and I have the audacity to carry an RM18.00 handbag. So my money has to go somewhere.

This lunch happened last year, I think. I did not blog about it then because it was not a good experience due to (1) the entree cost me RM95.00 and (2) it did not meet my expectations.

Where is this place? OK, it was here. There are two steak dishes on the menu. Sorry I can't remember the name.

My RM95.00 lunch. Australian grass fed beef. I requested for the steak to be done medium rare.

It was a rather thin piece of steak.

OK, slightly pink. But this was not a great meal. Which is why I have stopped looking for that restaurant that serves great steaks.

The only way to assure oneself of a good steak, cook it yourself.

  1. Ya, it does look well done but personally, I prefer it that way. They sure seemed very generous with the potatoes.

    1. Come to think of it, quite risky to eat it half cooked.

  2. I wonder if they are not grass fed beef, what do the cows eat?? Do they eat cereals, potatoes or rice?
Your cooking is way so much better and thicker! Yums!

Inside your RM18.00 handbag contains some bundles of bank notes of US dollars. Accountants are always very rich and stingy, so the saying goes. LOL

    1. Cows are fed so many other things and I read that they are even fed with meat processed from dead cows.

  3. I'm always weary about ordering steaks from a place that don't specialise in steaks...especially so when they have only one or two options on their menu. I'm still trying to find good steaks myself...good and expensive steaks are easy to find but good and affordable steaks are harder to come by. These days, we can't expect much from steaks under RM100. Wagyu is always the safer bet.

    1. I'm quite scared to order wagyu since it is so expensive and I may not be able to tell if I am actually served wagyu.

    2. If it's a reputable steak house, there is no way they'll 'cheat' you and serve you wagyu when it's not (and you will know if it's not wagyu based on the taste and how good the steak is). If they're found out, the 'scandal' will be too much for them to bear.

  4. I agree with your last sentence 100%. Therefore I am very wary of ordering steaks (beef) at restaurants. So far, I think the number of steaks that I have ordered in restaurants can be counted on one hand I believe. Recently I read that the steaks at Prime at Le Meridien Hotel are on par with or even better than European Michelin stars restaurants in Europe so I am tempted to try it there but I guess it will burn a hole in pocket.

  5. OH yes, that is why I don't order steaks here in Ipoh... firstly, they are costly and secondly, they do not taste like the taste which I have tasted over the sea. :) Having say that, it is a wise move to grill it ourselves... LOL..

  7. Thank God I am not so crazy about steak. My man is, on the other hand but we seldom have it. Like you said, it doesn't come cheap.

Your steak looked good. Red inside. Indeed, cook ourselves will ensure nicer, well marinated, red and juicy steak.

  9. since i can't cook a steak to save my life, the only way to assure myself a good steak is to ask someone else to make it for me, heh. sometimes i ask for my steak rare at restaurants just so it's not overdone ;)

  10. I love your conclusion. I never cook meat though. I rarely order meat even so the only time I eat it is dining with a group and shared plates, one of which is steak. I think it's better for my budget too. ;-)

  12. I would rather be like you, carry a RM18 handbag and have loads of money inside than having a branded expensive bag with no money inside LOL

  13. Like what Kris's comment, good and affordable steak is rare (or does it exist?) so I rather hold my craving until I have budget for a good quality one.
