Teow Chew Lor, The Starling (CLOSED)

This is another post that happened last year. It was one of those food experiences that did not get me excited to immediately write a post.

When I visited, Teo Chew Lor had just opened. When you walk past or are very near this restaurant, you will smell five spice powder. Very strong. It is no different today.

I wasn't too happy with where I was seated but I was alone and seats for small parties are limited.

Ordering here is by way of filling up an order form. One thing I learnt that day is make sure you go over what you have written with the server because there was a mix up in my order.

I wrote 102 (yam rice) but I was served fish cakes (T02). But I got that sorted out and they took back the fish cakes and served me the yam rice.

I had the mixed platter.

Look at that. They can't even give me a whole egg. That's probably quarter of an egg. Why? Are eggs expensive?

I was not very impressed with the braised meat dish as the aroma of five spice powder was way too strong for me. As for the yam rice, it was heavy and starchy. It did not have any distinctive taste to it too.

That was my first and last visit.

  1. I don't like mushy rice too >_<

  2. I can understand why there is a mix up (1 and T may look similar if one don't look carefully or in case our handwriting is scarcely legible...hehe!). That's why I've learned to check the printed chit when they bring back the confirmed order.

  4. The mural at the entrance reminds me of a Disney animation.

  6. Oh, I see you don't like strong five spice powder taste. In that case, I think you won't like the Beef noodles in Din Tai Fung because the dark strong broth includes a lot of strong tasting herbs that are somewhat similar to five spice powder.

  7. No pieces/cubes of yam in the yam rice at all? If none at all, then it is not good.

  9. I have eaten at the branch in One Utama in 2015 before it moved to a bigger shop due to good business. It was just ok so I did not go back.

  10. I had a very nice dish of stewed pork leg, no overpowering five spice and I got a whole egg. RM17 though, serving for two. I wonder how much yours was.

  14. I love yam rice. Too bad not worth going again. Good tips to go over order with the server. Must remember to do so each time we use the order form. Have a wonderful weekend!

  16. OMG! So cham and the egg was just a slice. It was their bad day as the chicken could not lay enough eggs behind the counter. They lost one customer.
