A new pizza joint opened recently (yay!). The week before I stepped into Pizza Craft@Damansara Uptown, I walked past a few times while running errands.
They were already open but I was not too sure if I should go inside. So it does help to have people stand outside to encourage customers to come in.
After having a good dose of wanton mee and curry mee at Annie 1, I thought I should shift my attention to this new eatery.
I paid Pizza Craft a visit one day after running my errands at Telekom. There were two ladies inside talking to a guy behind the counter (who I later realized was the cashier). He was helping them to decide what to order.

I was mislead by the "Order Here" sign and approached the two staff standing behind the counter. The guys sheepishly pointed out to me that I should order at the cashier. Right.
I had to wait a bit as the two ladies were undecided. Me? I am very decisive. I already checked the menu outside and made up my mind.
There are 12 Specialty Pizzas and 2 Dessert Pizzas. I selected the Mustard Chorizo. That's red sauce, mozzarella, chicken chorizo, jalapenos, semi-caramelized onions, mustard sauce, oregano and parsley.
Being the kiamsiap auntie that I am, I did not order any drinks because they provide free water. Just help yourself from the self-service counter. That's where you also pick up your serviettes, saucers, condiments and utensils.
As I was waiting for my pizza, more people came in and even more were curiously peering into the shop and checking out the menu outside.

The size I chose is the personal-7 inch though I am very capable of polishing off the 9 inch. But I am into portion control these days. So.
The pizza is a thin crust pizza with a generous spread of red sauce (tomato sauce). I felt that there was not enough mozzarella. The tomato sauce was tart and overpowering. And so were the herbs. The chicken chorizo was not outstanding and did not justify the presence of the mustard.
I'm afraid this is not the pizza for me.
As I was noshing on my pizza, a group of office workers took the seats beside mine. Just then another member (of quite a hefty size) of their group came in and plonked himself on a seat. There was a sound resonating from the chair and plink plink out came two screws (plus some sawdust). Can you spot them?

As I was finishing my meal, a staff came over to ask me if everything was OK. It's nice that they want feedback from customers.
I decided to stay silent on the tomato sauce and the herbs. I mean, this pizza was meant to have tomato sauce and Italian herbs.

Having said this, I cannot pass judgement based on just one pizza. Since I enjoy pizzas (a lot), I have to come back to try at least another one. One without the red sauce (which leaves me with just 3 choices).
And guess what? That evening I had no food in the house and no plans for dinner. So. I went back for more. This time I ordered takeaway.

The BBQ Chicken. No red sauce, so this can't go wrong. It was nice enough but could do with more BBQ sauce and more pineapples.
They've burnt the crust but luckily for them, I am one of those people who actually love burnt crust. Crunchy and smoky. My complaint would be that the chicken (quite generous amounts here) was very dry. That needs improvement.
Oh wait. That's not all.
The most surprising of all was the Blueberry Beef. Now, who puts blueberry jam on a beef pizza?
I was taking a risk buying this unusual combo and to top it off I was fearful of the cream sauce. I am generally averse to anything with cream. But never try never know. So.
It was actually good. You can't taste the blueberry flavor at all. What the jam does is add a hint of sweet to the savory beef (crumbled meatball). And the cream sauce? I liked it and it tasted good to me. I was happy with this one.
Two pizzas (they were small ones) in one sitting. Whatever happened to portion control? And three pizzas in a day. That's me. Having an all out carb fest on a non-cheat day.
All in all, what do I think of Pizza Craft? Yes, the pizzas are a little different from the ones I have had before. True to their tagline "A little out of the box" they attempt to create artisan pizzas, working with unconventional flavor pairings which hopefully excite our local pizza lovers.
I like that concept but how well received it is among pizza lovers here, we'll see. So far the response appears quite encouraging, as this place seem to pack eager customers coming to have a little something different for lunch or dinner. All the best Pizza Craft!

Looks like the Singapore franchise here, I can't say I like theirs. You can have a slice or more of each different flavour to make up one pizza. Yes, the crust was burnt. Tsk! Tsk!
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely nicer to be able to buy per slice. That way you can have variety. There's an outlet at 1-Utama which does that but I haven't tried.

DeleteI have not had pizza for over a year. We used to have a very good sour dough and wood fired pizza but since the owner sold his business and with the expansion, quality has gone down hill. An Italian store holder within the vicinity of the original pizza place would not touch it with a barge pole.

DeleteI think the blueberry beef pizza probably works along the same lines as Ikea meatballs served with lingonberry jam (which we first thought to be an unusual combo but ended up to be delicious). Looking at the pics, I have to agree with you that the pizzas seem to be lacking mozzarella and the toppings don't quite come to the edges of the pizzas. For a pizza place to be successful, they have to nail their tomato base sauce as it's key. Based on the prices, would you rather have this or Domino's? And judging from your last sentence, I'm assuming you won't be going back for more?
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I find Dominos much tastier and more packed with toppings. I will go back but not so soon. Favorite pizza is still Skippys pork pizzas :)

heh..heh...I once bought chorizo and upon checking the label, the ingredient was chicken. Kena tipu! You are right, did not taste good, nowhere near the real thing.

DeleteThe BBQ is good. It would be better if they add more sauce and if the chicken is moist. I think they used breast meat, that's why so dry.
