Air Fryer Fried Chicken

So last Sunday I was in experimental mode. I have seen Youtube videos of people making fried chicken in their air fryer. I just had to give it a go lah even though I already know that nothing beats fried chicken that has been deep fried in oil.

The preparation methods I have seen appear to be no different from how you would prepare the chicken if you were deep frying in oil.

I basically used the recipe here except that I did not soak the chicken in buttermilk (I could not find buttermilk and also I did not have the time).

I had to spray oil onto the chicken before air frying them. It's quite tricky because you might miss some spots and those areas not covered with oil will come out like this :

You see the white flour? I had to spray that part with oil and return the chicken into the air fryer to cook for a little while.

This is my sad looking air fried chicken drumstick.

It smelled like regular fried chicken, it was crispy but it didn't have the kind of texture and taste that regular fried chicken has. Obviously, right?

I ate it and although it is nothing like regular fried chicken, I am not complaining. I mean it still tastes good, it still had crunch. And I did not have to sweat at the stove and get my kitchen oily.

I also did not waste a lot of oil.

So this here was my Sunday lunch.

Better than KFC? Of course not lah. How can? Don't worry KFC. You will still get lots of business from me and everyone else.

Next time I want me some good old home made fried chicken, I am deep frying. Never mind the oily kitchen. Janji ayam goreng sedap.

Just in case anyone wants to know, I set the air fryer at 200C and air fried the chicken for around 20 minutes, turning at half time and spraying with some more oil.

  1. Your air fryed chicken looked shrunken and dehydrated. Muahahahaha I would dip into Thai Chilly sauce to eat happily. Next time just place old newspapers on the kitchen floor and near the stove when deep frying. My mother never had headaches ever since.

    1. LOL! I agree that the chicken looks so kecut. But it was not dry at all. I ran out of Thai chili sauce, or else I would have dipped my chicken with it. I will keep in mind your newspaper tip should I decide to deep fry some chicken!

  2. Ayam goreng. Mana tak goreng?? Haha. I like fried chicken but hate the work, sweat and oil. Rarely cook that now, mostly ai grill my chicken. Healthier than fried chicken, I think. Lol.

  3. Looks good, tastes good but of course, cannot beat deep fried in oil!!! Like egg fried in non-stick pan, so kesian...compared to deep frying in lots of oil in a wok. the lovely fragrant golden fringe and all!

    1. Oh yes, I never like frying sunny side up eggs in a non-stick pan. They never look good.

  5. Well, looks like what my neighbour said about the (air) fried chicken is true. I guess I won't be needing any air fryer (especially after your confirmation). Since it can't even cook the flour, I guess it won't cook any fried chicken that has a thick batter either. I'm guessing you won't be making any (air) fried chicken after this? ;) Hehehe...if you want good fried chicken, there's only one way...it has to be deep fried in oil! :D

    1. You won't need an air fryer as it functions just like your oven. I was actually curious about it and got the impetus to buy when I read a write up about the Philips XXL. It was quite a hassle having to spray oil every now and then to cover up those flour bits. But I don't regret buying the air fryer as it serves me well when I want to roast/grill small portions of food.

  7. I still haven't decided whether to buy an air fryer. I guess every appliances has their usefulness. Home made fried chicken is healthy. Hubby will say that easier to buy KFC. Lol!

  9. Normally I didn't coat any flour on my food if I need to AF them. Or you may need to wait the flour coating "moist" again then only AF them, so the uncooked flour problem should be solved.
