Ring! Ring! Boh Lang! Boh Lang!

Many years ago, I had a client whose aged mother lived with him. The old lady was often left alone at home when her son and daughter-in-law were at their shop.

The old lady was hard of hearing and if you phoned the house she would pick up and before you could even say anything, she would yell "boh lang! boh lang!" (nobody in! nobody in!).

I reckon that her hearing is so bad that she cannot hear anything over the phone (unless if you speak very loudly), so the easiest solution is to tell you no one is home.

Since we are on this subject, how many of you love to yak on the phone? I know of people who can talk for ages with the phone stuck to their ear. An ex-colleague once told me that when he and his wife were courting, they could talk for hours (until his ears burned) but after they got married, their phone conversations were reduced to errm... hmmm... hmmm... all it took was just less than a minute hah..hah..

Me? Generally, I don't like to talk on the phone. I have a phobia for phoning people (don't ask me why) which is why I prefer to communicate via text or email. Of course, phone calls are necessary when a situation is urgent or if you need a quick answer or confirmation.

So what has all this got to do with that claypot rice? Nothing lah. Just cerita-cerita only. I didn't cook using the claypot because I don't know how. The "claypot rice" was cooked in the rice cooker and transferred into the claypot. I was just faking it hah..hah...

This is another one of my favorite one pot meals that is delicious and hassle free. It is great for food prep too. If you have this in the freezer and are too busy (or lazy in my case) to cook during the weekend, it will take the stress off you.

For the recipe, you can refer to my post from 6 years ago where you will find another grandmother story (and how I am now eating my words about not having pets) but that one has some relevance to the so-called claypot rice. Hah!

  3. I don't like to talk on the phone. I prefer whatapps instead. So I dislike it when delivery persons call me on the phone. I prefer using the messaging feature in Grab to communicate with the delivery persons.

  4. You are so early today. Guess you are in the office now. Thanks for the link to your recipe. Since using soy sauce to marinate, I guess the brand of the soy sauce is very important. If the soy sauce is not tasty then the dish koyak la. What brand of soy sauce do you use - light, dark and oyster sauce brands?

    1. Oh dear, sometimes I change brands and can't remember which one I used hah..hah... But for oyster sauce it is always Lee Kum Kee.

  5. I jst read the post from 6 years ago and yea, it was so sentimental....I would miss the doggies too (if I ever have a pet dog). Your doggies are so blessed with good food....at least they got cooked rice and not some stale food. I dislike talking on the phone coz sometimes it tends to get miscommunicate. I would prefer text/email for clarity, and to prevent miscommunication at both end.

  7. Seldom talk too long over phone. I think the longest over a house phone was many years ago with a friend. Talked till my ear was burning hot and in pain. Lol.

Now with habdphone, we all whatsapp or sms.

I have a claypot but I dobt use it for claypot rice. I used my flip pan or rice cooker instead.

  8. i liked chatting on the phone as a teenager, but those were the simpler times before the internet completely changed communication! nowadays i'm the same like you - i never call anyone except for emergencies, and i usually don't answer calls either (except if it's a dreaded call from the office headquarters, heheh). if you need something, whatsapp lah :D

    1. Even as a teenager, I disliked phone conversations but I had friends who would call in. So layan lah. Me too, especially if I don't recognize the number, I don't answer. Yup, I prefer whatsapp too. You are more likely to get a response from me that way hee..hee..

  9. Your claypot chicken rice look the part...hee..hee! ;) I see you cooked your 'fake' claypot chicken rice slightly different from me...you wok-fry the ingredients first. I'm too lazy for that (when it's a one-pot rice meal), mine is simpler, I chuck everything in a rice cooker + mine also involves less washing...haha! If I had to wash an extra wok or pan, I must make it worth my while by pan-frying the chicken to achieve some caramelisation/charring (like the one you had the other day). ^_~ For me, besides lap cheong, salted fish is also a must (my husband would insist we ask for added salted fish when we order ours outside).

All the tech has made us lazy to communicate 'mouth to mouth' and 'face to face' these days...and with social distancing, there'll be even less opportunities for that. It's so much easier to just email and whatsapp saja-lah! ;D

    1. Looks real, right? hah..hah.. But just for the fun of it, one day I am going to cook it in the claypot. If it was a disaster, it would make for a good story.

Even before the tech days, I disliked phone calls and I had been social distancing for a long time wahahaha...

  10. Nowadays I hardly talk on the phone, prefer to text, or send voice message. I went back 6 years to read your post and it makes me miss my pet dogs. Your chicken rice in clay pot sounds and looks delicious.

  13. I like people calling me and i like talking on the phone, but gone are the days we "cook phone porridge" (cantonese). I miss those days. I feel people treasure me when they make the efforts to call me. Now, your claypot rice looks presentable and yummy!

    1. That's one way of looking at it and it is true, if people make the effort to call, then they truly treasure you. But for me, if I treasure you, I will give you many text messages. LOL!

  14. I encounter calling people in my telemarketing job that before i can say anything, they say "wrong number!" Lol.
