This is nothing new. Mason Jar meals were the rage at one time. I remember looking at the beautiful jars of food in wonder. In particular salads which looked so fetching layered in a jar.
Then I promptly forgot all about it until recently when I read about these jars of salad from a vending machine. I was like wow, those jars of salad look so gorgeous.
So. I decided to give it a go and make my own. You need a suitable sized jar that has enough room to house your salad ingredients. And a wide mouth is preferred so that it is easy to pack the salad and also to eat. But is this practical?
The salad dressing goes in first followed by ingredients that won't easily get soggy like onions, carrots or beans. Then followed by the protein like chicken and then cucumbers, tomatoes and lastly the salad leaves.
I thought it would be cool to have ready packed salads like this and I can just grab and go before I leave for work.
Well, time to test if this is good. At the office.
Time to tuck in. Bye bye chap fan. |
I gave it a vigorous shake to get the dressing to dress all my ingredients.
All shook up. |
I think I did not provide enough dressing and it did not quite get to all my ingredients.
It was alright. Perhaps I need a bigger jar. Or I should pack the dressing separately.
I think it would be better for me to pack my salad ingredients in my glass box containers and then pack the dressing separately. It would be easier to dress the salad that way.
Well, it was fun. My very own salad in a jar. Yeah, why not.
Can you make one healthy bottle for me .... hehehehe?
ReplyDeleteCan can hee..hee...
DeleteYeah, I've heard of these ready-to-eat salad jars and making your own is definitely cheaper. I'd think the main purpose for making them this way is for storage purposes (like when you're making a big batch at one time). And if I had one of those in the fridge, I'll definitely poured it out onto a plate for eating coz eating it from a not-wide-enough jar isn't practical at all. I also think it's not a case of not enough dressing, just that as you ate the dressing trickled down to the bottom of the jar again! :( That small jar of salad wouldn't have been enough for me for lunch...hehe! ;D
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly it was enough for me that day hah...hah....The dressing sort of clung to the veggies at the bottom. I would prefer to pack in a box container and also separate the dressing.
DeleteI saw them sold but always feel it tak cukup for me. Lol
ReplyDeleteI also think tak cukup. Very small portion at a very high price.
DeleteI mountain tortoise, first time see the salad jar...
ReplyDeleteOh I see.....hee..hee...
DeleteHmmm...how do I get to the things at the bottom if I want those? Hehehehehe!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou have to dig LOL!
DeleteI just saw something like this today from Fruit Juice. Good for storage but like Kris, I would have to pour the salad out to eat cos the mouth of the jar is too small for me.
ReplyDeleteYeah, not so practical to eat out from the bottle.
DeleteI have not seen a salad in a mason jar. Smoothie, dessert and breakfast, yes. But there are no hard and fast rules on how food should be served. We now have chunky chips served in a small clay flower pot.
ReplyDeleteThose creative ways of food packaging and presentation always fascinates me.
Deletecukup makan meh? comeon...be honest :p
ReplyDeleteEh, cukup lah. But short while later lapor pulok....
Deletedid your colleagues stare in curious envy as you enjoyed your bottled salads? i would, wondering what exactly is in the jar. maybe beetroot, one of my favourite salad components :D
ReplyDeleteThey didn't see me eat that day hah..hah...oh, beetroot...that is something I haven't eaten yet and I wonder why. hmmmm....
DeleteThey look nice but glass are heavier and easily breaks. It not for me because I am quite clumsy. I prefer a wider mouth container so that I can also eat the meat and veggie alternately. If not, I will have to eat all the meat last.
ReplyDeleteI agree, bottle may look pretty but not practical to eat from it. Now I pack in box containers.
DeleteYou have been eating quite a lot of salad recently, am I right?
ReplyDeleteYes, I have. I love salads and it's good for low carb eating plan.
DeleteThis jar food definitely not my kind of food, not convenient to be consumed >_<
ReplyDeleteYes, I tried it once only LOL!
DeleteI think box container is the right way to go. Eating out of a jar, I don't think is too practical. Instagram friendly only...
ReplyDeleteI totally agree!
DeleteYour jars are so beautiful like mini plants and bonsai inside bottles!
ReplyDeleteI used to see mainland folks in China carrying their hot tea inside these similar glass jars to drink! They tied with rafia strings to carry them! I want to adopt your bottled salad idea and bring up the plane!
They do look good but not so convenient to eat. Now I use a box container.
DeleteI guess they were in fashion last year! 😀 I will do one some day. Some day😀
ReplyDeletehah..hah...that means never :D :D :D
