A Horrible Nasi Lemak

I was craving for nasi lemak and I wanted to eat nasi lemak in a nice environment with a hot cup of Long Black.

It was a bad idea because the better nasi lemaks are usually found in not so comfortable or pretty places.

When I was served, I noted that the serving size was quite generous. I like that.

Upon closer inspection, the rice looked soggy.

I had a taste. It tasted predominantly of ginger and fenugreek (halba). No lemak taste unfortunately.

The fried chicken looked well fried but the meat was mushy and bland.

The sambal was unmemorable.

The peanuts and ikan bilis were crunchy/crispy but stone dry. Probably prepared by way of roasting in the oven and not fried.

The rice was so bad that I left it uneaten. That was not a good nasi lemak experience. So different from the first time I had it.

  1. Oh no!!! It's so bad that you forgot to mention the horrible place too. I agree that Nasi Lemak must not be mushy and should have the santan fragrance. You should have added water and boil it to make porridge. Muahahahaha

  2. Oh dear!!! That was bad! I had some here with not so lemak rice but usually, the sambal will save the day. Ya...best to go to those cheap stalls and shops for such things. The classier joints do not seem to know how to get it right.

    1. That's right. Those tiny warongs by the roadside are a better bet.

  3. you are so nice not to name the enbassy in your post. I am ok with non lemak rice because I like the taste of ginger too and too much lemak gives me tummy wind but to pay more than rm20 for it, then I would say no no. I am only prepared to pay up to rm20 for nasi lemak unless it gives 3 types of meat like chicken and beef and sotong/prawns. so I guess you have banned this place.

    1. Not going back there again for anything else. Village Park nasi lemak is good but it is practically impossible to eat there as it is super duper crowded.

  4. I would usually go for the roadside stall to get my nasi lemak fix....or if wanting to eat in a 'better and comfy' place it would be papparich.

  5. When you said you had a horrible nasi lemak, I looked intensely at the first pic to see what I can spot. The first thing I noticed was that the rice was broken and wet. The chicken looked well fried. The nuts looked roasted instead of fried..and what happened to all that nice brown skin? The ikan bilis are of a good quality (ready peeled ones with guts removed). The sambal had a nice colour. The egg had no dark ring.

And then you mentioned that it was different from the first time you had it...so I looked at those photos again. The rice looked much better. The nuts were the same. The ikan bilis was of a poorer quality. The chicken and sambal have to judge by tasting. Perhaps there has been a change of chef as the cooking of the rice, chicken and sambal will definitely hinge on the ability of the chef.

There are good nasi lemak to be found from 'comfy' places but it must be a speciality of theirs, otherwise the best nasi lemaks will always come from stalls at RM5 - RM6...haha! ;D

    1. That nasi lemak was an abomination! I can't believe they can serve that. I only wish Chef Wan could have tasted it and gave his honest opinion hee..hee... There is a nice nasi lemak at Village Park but it is very difficult to get a seat :(

    2. Ya, I've eaten that one quite a few times (love the fried chicken)...and on Sunday mornings, the crowd is relentless.

  8. I just had nasi lemak today from the mamak and it was so cheap and nice! There are a few air-conditioned places with nice nasi lemak and they're mostly in Petaling Street / Bukit Bintang area.

  9. Gosh. Definitely bad review. I wouldn't enjoy such food.

Nasi lemak must have lemak taste in the rice.

  11. I agree with you. Nasi lemak tepi jalan or small warung taste better.

  12. Oh dear! what a waste. Since you like the Village Park nasi lemak, tapau next time. It's faster and you don't have to wait for a seat. I also think they use Food Panda or Grab Food so that is an option as well. Have a yummy nasi lemak in the comfort of your own home :)

  13. Through experience, the roadside stall nasi lemak is still the best and cheap too.
