Whenever I go and eat chap fan, the lady boss never speaks to me beyond telling me the price to pay. Not that she is snobbish or anything.
It's just that she noticed that I don't speak Cantonese (in the early days, she said chat khau poon (seven fifty) and I went, huh?).
My command of Cantonese is just enough for me to understand how much my food cost. And oh, I don't use the word kar fan (extra rice) anymore.
She is quite chatty with some of her other customers and when there is a lull in service, she has a bit of fun joking with the coffee shop foreign workers.
And then one day, she finally spoke to me.
When she saw what was on my plate, she could hold her tongue no longer.
"Aiyerrr!!! Lei mou sek fan sek hamtan!!!". My Cantonese has improved by leaps and bounds to understand what confounded the good lady. For my friends who don't understand Cantonese, translation : "Aiyeerrr!!! You don't eat rice and you eat salted egg!!!"

DeleteI understand Cantonese. From the tv drama. But I dont really have good command when it comes to speech. Hardly speak that language in East Nalaysia. Haha.

I have lived in PJ for almost 30 years and yet haven't picked up Cantonese. In fact those Indon workers can speak it so fluently!

That looks like your menu from Mon - Fri though I see a 'constant' in all your dishes...cili api! O_o I think I like Fri the best coz I love hamtan too (especially when the yolk is all glistening and oily like that)...but I need rice lah...wuahahahaha...otherwise very salty leh! ;)

DeleteI am going to say the same thing too.. Aiyer.. no rice how to eat salted egg? :) But on second thoughts, mash the salted egg up and eat with the greens and meat, can be very very tasty too!

Deletehaha...u r exactly like my colleague who can only understands hokkien and very minimal cantonese. But nowadays most hawkers can speak mandarin well, so perhaps can converse in mandarin? Funnily people sees me and speaks mandarin to me then turn to the other fella and speaks canto to them...

DeleteYour chap fan choices I like. If I see salted egg yolk like this oily one, I will surely order, rice or without rice. I can only tahan half the amount of cili padi. If I finish the same amount as on your plate, my ear and tongue will be on fire! Ha ha ha!
